There is no single book titled N2 Electrical Trade Theory Textbook. It is a category of South African Report 191 N2 study books from different publishers. One clearly identifiable option is Electrical Trade Theory N2 by Wilfred Fritz, Deon Kallis and Veronica Oosthuizen, ISBN 9781485717386. Before buying, match the book’s publisher, authors or ISBN to the edition prescribed by your college.
What N2 Electrical Trade Theory covers
The Report 191 syllabus transcription implemented in May 2021 describes N2 as an introductory subject for learners assumed to have no previous electrical background. Its stated aim is to develop theory relevant to preparing for electrical installation work and to apprenticeship, learnership, contracting, industrial and power-utility environments. Completing N2 alone should not be taken as proof of qualification to perform regulated electrical work.

How to choose the right edition
- Ask your college which book and edition it prescribes. A book can share the subject title but use a different publisher, edition or ISBN.
- Match the contents to the current syllabus. Check for the listed N2 areas, and ask your lecturer whether the book reflects the curriculum currently taught.
- Check how it teaches the material you find difficult. Look for worked calculations, clear explanations and labelled diagrams that support your learning.
- Confirm the format is usable and available to you. Check whether you can obtain the required physical or digital edition before relying on it for class or exam preparation.
What the syllabus transcription says about assessment
The May 2021 syllabus transcription describes a one-trimester offering with two formal class tests. It says a learner needs a trimester mark of at least 40% to qualify for the final examination. Under that document, the trimester mark is calculated as 30% of Test 1 plus 70% of Test 2.
Rank #2
- Comprehensive Electrical Textbook — Provides detailed coverage of fundamental electrical theory and practical electrical concepts for students and learners.
- Electrical Theory & Circuits — Covers voltage, current, resistance, Ohm's Law, resistors, series circuits, parallel circuits and combination circuits.
- AC & DC Concepts — Explores alternating current, direct-current principles, inductance, capacitors, batteries and three-phase power.
- Electrical Equipment & Machines — Includes important concepts related to transformers, DC machines, AC machines, motors and electrical systems.
- Measurements & Applications — Covers electrical safety, test instruments, conductor sizing, wire sizes and practical electrical applications.
The transcription describes a closed-book final examination lasting three hours and worth 100 marks, with a minimum examination pass mark of 40%. It gives the promotion mark as 40% of the trimester mark plus 60% of the examination mark. It also says a non-programmable scientific calculator is allowed and a formula sheet accompanies the paper. These are rules stated in a third-party transcription of the syllabus implemented in May 2021, not a guarantee of current college practice; confirm current requirements with your college.
A Future Managers-hosted April 2016 examination paper also shows a three-hour, 100-mark paper, but it refers to a dated SANS wiring code. Treat that paper as a historical format example, not current wiring-regulation guidance.
