Yes, a laser can cut grass in a test setup—but the reported experiments show why that does not make it a practical lawn mower. Grass has to stay in the beam long enough to heat and cut, wet growth takes longer, and slow coverage can turn a mowing job into days of work. The same experiments also raise serious eye and fire hazards.
How the laser lawn-mower experiments worked
The basic difference from a conventional mower is exposure time. Rotating blades cut grass as they sweep past; a laser must deliver enough energy to a spot before moving on. The experiments described by Hackaday show the trade-off between reaching each blade briefly and keeping a beam on the grass long enough to cut it.
A spinning arrangement struggled to focus
In Allen Pan’s first setup, two diode lasers were mounted in a spinning arrangement intended to act somewhat like mower blades. Hackaday’s Maya Posch reported on September 3, 2024, that focusing the beams proved difficult and that each beam spent too little time on an individual blade of grass. Removing the focusing lenses addressed some of the focusing problems, but the brief exposure remained a limitation.
A stationary grid could cut grass, but slowly
The next approach used multiple lasers fixed in a grid, giving grass longer exposure to the beams. Hackaday reported that this arrangement could cut grass. It also reported that thick, moist grass took longer because the lasers had to boil off moisture before cutting, creating a risk of igniting the lawn; the experimenters encountered that risk. These are observations from the reported build, not independently repeated measurements.

Designed for complex yard layouts and personalized lawn care.
Why it is not a practical replacement for a mower
Cutting a patch is not the same as covering a lawn efficiently. In Hackaday’s September 3, 2024 account, an earlier rctestflight build used a stationary 40-watt diode laser sweeping across an area. The publication characterized the slowly moving platform as potentially taking days to cut a lawn, compared with a couple of minutes for rapidly spinning conventional mower blades. That is a qualitative comparison of the builds, not a controlled performance study or a general estimate for laser systems.
The bottleneck is the combination of dwell time and coverage: a beam that moves quickly reaches more ground but may not cut each blade; one that lingers can cut but covers ground slowly. Grass that falls into the beam path can create another obstacle. Nerdist’s Melissa T. Miller reported on September 22, 2022, that Daniel Riley’s rctestflight rover scorched parts of grass, weeds, and bushes over multiple weeks without completing the job. The account says fallen grass impeded the beam, and an attempted cyclone separator failed.

Is a laser lawn mower safe?
These demonstrations should not be treated as safe DIY mower designs. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration explains that hazard classes indicate increasing potential danger. Its guidance says Class IIIb (IEC 3B) lasers can pose an immediate skin hazard from the direct beam and an immediate eye hazard if viewed directly. Class IV (IEC 4) lasers can pose immediate skin and eye hazards from direct or reflected beams, and fire may also be a hazard. The reports do not establish the experimental lasers’ classes or wavelengths, so those classifications cannot be assigned to the builds.
The FDA also notes that product labels identify output power and hazard class, and that apparent brightness is not a reliable guide to a laser’s power. The reported fire risk in thick grass is an additional practical concern. Generic protective eyewear cannot be assumed to make an unknown laser setup safe; suitability depends on characteristics such as wavelength and hazard level. The reporting does not establish whether any particular build complied with or violated a regulation.

What the experiments actually demonstrate
- Lasers can cut grass under test conditions, but the reported setups needed enough beam exposure at each point.
- Moisture and thick growth slowed cutting in the stationary-grid experiment, with a reported risk of ignition.
- The cited accounts describe slow, incomplete lawn coverage rather than a tested, practical alternative to conventional mowing.
- The laser classes and wavelengths for the specific builds are not established by the cited reports.
For construction and property maintenance, the useful takeaway is not a new mowing method: these builds illustrate how a tool can perform a narrow task in a demonstration yet fail at the coverage, speed, and safety demands of real outdoor work.
