For effective mosquito control at home, remove standing water once a week, keep screens in good repair, and use an EPA-registered repellent to help prevent bites. Treat water with larvicide only when it cannot be drained or covered and is not used for drinking; follow the product label.
Start by removing mosquito breeding sites
Mosquitoes develop through aquatic life stages, so standing water around a property is the first place to look. CDC recommends checking water-holding items weekly and emptying and scrubbing them, turning them over, covering them, or discarding them.
Check tires, buckets, planters, toys, pools, birdbaths, flowerpot saucers, and trash containers. For water storage that must remain, use a tight cover or fine mesh to keep mosquitoes from reaching the water.
Choose a control method for the target

Use larvicide only for water that cannot be removed
CDC identifies mosquito dunks or bits as homeowner larvicide options for water that cannot be dumped or covered. They are not a substitute for routine cleanup of removable water. Do not use them in water intended for drinking, and do not apply more or reapply more often than the label directs.

Keep mosquitoes outside and prevent bites
Install or repair window and door screens, keep doors closed, and use air conditioning when possible. For personal protection, choose a repellent registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and use it according to its label. CDC and EPA recommend EPA-registered repellents; CDC says the effectiveness of non-EPA-registered repellents, including some natural products, is not known. Do not assume an unregistered product offers equivalent protection.
When to consider indoor or professional treatment
CDC advises using indoor insecticide only if mosquitoes remain after screens have been installed or repaired and indoor water-holding containers have been emptied and scrubbed. A pest-control professional can be hired to treat indoor areas, yards, or other outdoor spaces. For a persistent problem, identify where mosquitoes may be entering or breeding before choosing a treatment.

How community mosquito control works
Household measures are one part of a broader approach. CDC describes integrated mosquito management as a combination of methods guided by mosquito biology and life cycle. Public programs may monitor mosquito populations, remove breeding sites, control larvae and pupae, use adult mosquito control when appropriate, and monitor results.
Professionals may use adulticides when surveillance indicates rising adult populations or virus transmission. These community actions do not replace removing breeding water around a home. A simple weekly property check
- Walk the property and identify containers or features holding water.
- Empty and scrub, turn over, cover, or discard items that do not need to hold water.
- Cover water storage that must remain, using a tight cover or fine mesh.
- For water that cannot be drained or covered, check whether a label-approved larvicide is appropriate.
- Check screens and doors for gaps or damage, and repair them.
