Part 2 of Ask the Builder’s bath-remodel series focuses on breaking up the existing, thick cement (or “mud”) shower-pan floor with a rotary chipping hammer. The preceding Part 1 video says that taking out the shower curbing and walls first makes the floor easier to remove. Published on April 6, 2016, the video is a demonstration of one demolition step—not a current building-code guide or a complete safety procedure.

What Part 2 is actually about

The title can sound like a complete shower-pan replacement guide, but the published description is narrower. It identifies the segment as shower-pan cement-mud-floor removal and says Tim Carter demonstrates using a rotary chipping hammer to break up the thick cement floor. In other words, the central action is demolition of the existing floor layer, not installation of a new pan, waterproofing, drainage, tile or finished shower.

Ask the Builder describes the demonstration this way: “Tim Carter demonstrates how to use a rotary chipping hammer to quickly break up the thick shower pan cement floor.” That sentence is the publisher’s description of the video, not a statement presented as a direct quotation from Carter. You can watch the listing, dated April 6, 2016, on YouTube, or read the accompanying Ask the Builder Part 2 page.

“Mortar,” “cement” and “mud” in this context

The source uses several closely related terms for the existing shower floor: mortar shower pan, cement floor and mud floor. Here they refer to the thick cement-based layer being demolished. The wording does not provide a measured thickness, a drawing of the assembly or a specification for how the floor was built. Treat the terminology as a description of the material shown, not as a complete diagnosis of every older shower assembly.

Why Part 1 matters before you start Part 2

The Part 1 page is important because it supplies the sequence context that the Part 2 listing does not repeat. According to that page, removing the shower curbing and walls makes removal of the cement mud floor easier. That is the clearest process relationship in the published material: access is improved before the floor is attacked.

  1. Review the Part 1 context. Use Ask the Builder’s Part 1 page to understand the earlier demolition stage.
  2. Account for the curbing and walls. The source specifically says that their removal makes floor removal easier. Do not assume Part 2 is intended to show the entire enclosure being dismantled from start to finish.
  3. Then study the floor-breaking segment. Part 2 centers on the rotary chipping hammer working on the thick cement floor.

This sequence is a planning cue, not a universal demolition prescription. Existing showers differ in framing, plumbing, membranes and substrates, and the two short descriptions do not establish what is hidden below a particular floor.

The tool named in the video

Rotary chipping hammer

A rotary chipping hammer is the only tool category identified by the publisher. In the described demonstration, it supplies the impact needed to break the thick cement floor into smaller pieces. No manufacturer, model, bit, power rating, operating mode, hire source or accessory is specified, so there is no evidence-based basis for choosing one branded machine over another from this video.

If you are sourcing a tool for a one-off remodel, keep the decision at the category level: you need a rotary chipping hammer suitable for breaking up the material in your shower. The video does not establish a minimum specification, and it does not compare a rotary chipping hammer with alternative tools. Follow the instructions supplied with whatever equipment you actually use rather than treating an older demonstration as an equipment manual.

What the source does not identify

  • No make or model of rotary chipping hammer.
  • No chisel or bit type.
  • No power source, voltage, impact rating or weight.
  • No rental company or availability information.
  • No comparison with a demolition hammer, hand tools or other methods.

Those omissions matter if you are trying to reproduce the job. The evidence supports the tool category and its role, but not a shopping list or performance promise.

What the Part 2 demonstration establishes—and what it leaves open

Question What the published material establishes What remains unestablished
What is being removed? A thick cement shower-pan floor, also described as a cement mud floor. Exact thickness, dimensions, reinforcement, drain construction and underlying layers.
What is the principal tool? A rotary chipping hammer. Brand, model, bit, settings, power requirements and rental source.
What comes before floor removal? Part 1 says removing curbing and walls makes floor removal easier. A complete demolition sequence for every shower design.
When was the video published? April 6, 2016. Whether the methods meet current local code, manufacturer guidance or today’s safety practice.
Does it cover rebuilding? No; the description concerns breaking up the existing floor. Waterproofing, slope, drain connection, substrate repair, disposal and new-pan installation.

A practical way to use the video during planning

Use the segment as a visual reference for the demolition phase, then make a separate project plan for the conditions the video does not document. The following questions keep the demonstration in its proper scope.

1. Confirm that your existing floor is comparable

Identify whether the shower has the thick cement or mud floor described by the source. If you cannot tell what the floor contains, the video cannot resolve that uncertainty; a site inspection may be needed before selecting a demolition method.

2. Map the access created by earlier demolition

Part 1’s point about curbing and walls is practical: those elements can limit access to the floor. Plan how their removal changes the working area before you decide where a chipping hammer can be used. The source does not provide dimensions or a layout, so judge access at your own site.

3. Separate demolition from reconstruction

Breaking up the old floor is only one phase of a bath remodel. Keep decisions about the replacement pan, waterproofing, drain and finish work in separate steps. None of those downstream details is supplied by the Part 2 listing.

4. Read current instructions for the equipment and site

The 2016 video should not be treated as a current safety standard. The publisher page and listing summary do not provide protective-equipment requirements, site-condition checks, utility information, dust controls, debris-handling instructions or a full written demolition procedure. Obtain current, task-specific guidance from the equipment manufacturer and applicable local authorities or a qualified professional before performing the work.

A viewing checklist

Before you rely on the video for a real remodel, record what it can and cannot answer:

  • Scope: Is your goal only to expose or remove an existing cement floor, rather than to build the replacement shower?
  • Sequence: Have you reviewed the Part 1 explanation that curbing and walls are removed first to make floor removal easier?
  • Material: Do you have a reasonable basis for believing your floor is the thick cement or mud layer described?
  • Equipment: Have you selected a rotary chipping hammer using its own current instructions, since the video gives no model or settings?
  • Unknowns: Have you identified the details the video does not state, such as floor thickness, drain arrangement and what lies below?
  • Current requirements: Have you checked present-day local rules and professional guidance instead of assuming a 2016 demonstration is a code reference?

Common mistakes when interpreting this video

Expecting a complete shower-removal tutorial

Part 2 is about breaking up the floor. It does not promise instructions for removing every component of a shower or for installing a replacement. If you need those stages, they require separate, current instructions appropriate to your assembly.

Starting with the floor before creating access

The related Part 1 description directly says that removing curbing and walls makes floor removal easier. Ignoring that context can leave you trying to work through a restricted opening. The source does not prescribe a different sequence.

Assuming the tool details are universal

Because no make, model, bit or setting is named, the video cannot tell you what specification will suit your floor or how a particular machine should be operated. Use the video to understand the general role of a rotary chipping hammer, then defer to the instructions for the equipment in hand.

Treating an older demonstration as a current standard

The listing date is 2016. Building codes, work practices and manufacturer instructions can change, and the available description contains no code citation. Use current local requirements for decisions that affect your project.

Where the evidence stops

Neither the Part 2 page nor its listing summary supplies a written, start-to-finish procedure. They do not establish how to protect adjacent finishes, how to handle dust or debris, how to avoid concealed services, how to disconnect a drain, how to assess the substrate after removal or how to dispose of the broken material. Those are material job decisions, but adding specific directions here would go beyond what these sources document. A qualified remodeler can evaluate the actual shower and provide site-specific instructions.

Likewise, the sources contain no published measurements, test results, productivity figures or comparison data. “Quickly” appears in the publisher’s description, but it is descriptive wording, not a measured time claim. Do not use it to estimate labor hours or promise a completion rate.
