The Mayfly is the smaller option for up to 15 cans before ice; the larger Shasta is listed for up to 24. Their “puffy” construction makes them easier to pack than a hard-sided cooler, but the cooling-time figures published by the company and a 2023 article differ and are not backed by a shared test protocol.
What “puffy” means in this cooler
Monti’s concept adapts the baffled, insulated construction of a puffy jacket to a soft cooler. The quilted shell can scrunch or roll into a stuff sack, then expand to carry drinks and ice. New Atlas reported that synthetic insulation was chosen over down because a cooler is expected to encounter wet conditions and melting ice. That describes the design rationale, not an independent materials assessment.
Monti currently describes the shell as quilted PFAS-free nylon, with hydrophobic synthetic insulation, a seam-welded liner and waterproof zippers. These are manufacturer specifications; the product page is not an independent analysis of the materials or their performance.
Mayfly and Shasta: size, weight and packed dimensions
Monti’s current product page lists the Mayfly at 14L and the Shasta at 23L. New Atlas’s June 29, 2023 article gives their can capacities as 15 and 24 respectively, with both figures excluding ice. The Mayfly is lighter and packs smaller; the Shasta offers more listed capacity.

The dimensions and weights are from Monti’s current product page, accessed October 4, 2026; the can figures are from New Atlas’s 2023 article. These capacity numbers describe cans before adding ice, so they do not tell you how many drinks will fit alongside the amount of ice you plan to carry.
Which size suits your outing?
Choose the Mayfly for a smaller load
The 14L Mayfly is the more compact choice when a smaller drink load matters more than maximum volume. Its listed empty weight is 14.7 oz, and its packed stuff sack measures 8 × 7.5 × 3 inches. Allow space for ice or ice packs when estimating the usable drink capacity.

Choose the Shasta for more capacity
The 23L Shasta is the larger option, with a stated capacity of up to 24 cans before ice. Monti lists it at 17.2 oz and gives packed dimensions of 9 × 9 × 3.5 inches. It takes up more room when packed than the Mayfly, but provides more listed volume for a group or longer outing.
For a hike, bike ride, paddle or trip, compare the packed sack with the space available in your backpack or travel bag, then choose based on the drinks and cooling material you need to carry. The figures above do not establish that either model is the “most portable” cooler on the market; that phrase comes from a New Atlas headline, not a verified category-wide comparison.

How long does it keep contents cold?
The published retention figures are not directly comparable. New Atlas reported up to 30 hours for the redesigned models in 2023 and noted that performance depends on conditions and the amount of ice. Monti’s current Shasta page claims that independent testing found seven pounds of ice lasted over 55 hours, but the page does not provide a complete testing protocol. Neither figure should be treated as a guaranteed duration for every load or setting.
Because the sources do not describe a shared test method, they do not establish a reliable Mayfly-versus-Shasta cooling-time comparison. Actual results can vary with ice quantity, how often the cooler is opened and surrounding conditions.

Ice and condensation in humid conditions
Monti recommends ice packs rather than loose ice in higher-humidity environments if condensation is a concern. That is conditional accessory guidance from the manufacturer, not a claim that ice packs are necessary in every climate or use case.
