Miters: How Angled Cuts Form Clean Corners

A miter is an angled cut that joins pieces at a corner. Learn how to calculate the cut, distinguish a miter from a bevel, and choose a suitable cutting method.

A miter is an angled cut across a workpiece that lets two pieces meet at a corner. For a square frame corner, each piece is cut at 45 degrees; for other shapes, the required angle depends on the corner. The key distinction: a miter changes the cut across the board’s width, while a bevel tilts the blade through its thickness.

How miter angles work

The angle of each equal miter cut is half the corner angle formed by the joined members, according to the U.S. Navy’s NAVEDTRA 14043A woodworking manual (2014). A right-angle frame corner is 90 degrees, so each adjoining piece receives a 45-degree cut.

For a regular polygon with n sides, each interior corner is 180° − 360°/n. When two equal cuts share that corner, each cut is 90° − 180°/n. In the Navy manual’s convention, an octagon uses 67.5-degree miters and a pentagon uses 54-degree miters on each joined member.

Those calculations assume a regular shape and equal cuts. For an irregular corner, measure the actual angle between the members and divide it equally only if both pieces are intended to share the cut.

Miter, bevel, and compound cuts

  • Miter: The saw table or workpiece turns horizontally, so the cut crosses the board’s face at an angle while the blade remains vertical.
  • Bevel: The blade tilts, cutting through the board’s thickness at an angle.
  • Compound cut: Combines a miter and a bevel. This is useful when a piece must meet at an angled corner and also lean or slope through its thickness.

WorkSafe New Zealand uses these distinctions to describe miter saw types. Its guidance page warns that it has not been updated to reflect current workplace safety legislation, so follow current local requirements and the instructions for the specific saw.

Choose a cutting method for the work

Pick the method based on the cut angle and how repeatable it must be, the width of the stock, whether a bevel is also needed, available setup space, and your familiarity with the tool. A powered saw is not essential for every occasional cut.

Method or saw type What it does Useful when
Hand saw and miter box The box guides a hand saw at set angles. You have occasional basic cuts and do not need powered equipment.
Circular saw with a guide A guide helps control the saw along an angled cut. You already use a circular saw or need a guided cut on suitable stock.
Standard miter saw The table rotates for horizontal miter cuts; the blade stays vertical. You need repeatable angled crosscuts without a bevel.
Compound miter saw The table rotates and the blade tilts to make bevels as well as miters. The work needs both angles, such as some trim cuts.
Sliding compound miter saw Adds sliding travel to a compound saw’s cutting action. The board is wider than a non-sliding saw can cut in one pass, within the saw’s rated capacity.
Dual compound miter saw The blade tilts in either direction. You need flexibility for complex work, including some crown-molding cuts.

These type distinctions are described by WorkSafe New Zealand. Check the particular saw’s capacity and manual rather than assuming that a saw type guarantees a specific width or angle range. For practical cutting approaches, see Kreg’s guide to cutting angles.

Make the joint fit, then consider reinforcement

Mitered joints are common in frames and trim because their angled edges meet at a corner. Accuracy matters: a small angle or length error can leave a visible gap, especially when several pieces must meet around a frame or polygon. Test the setup on scrap when practical, and check the fit before assembling the finished pieces.

A splined miter adds a thin strip into a slot across the joint to reinforce it; This Old House explains the method. The available guidance does not establish a general numerical strength gain. Use a miter saw safely

A miter saw is a circular power saw mounted on a frame for accurate angle cuts, as described in OSHA’s miter-saw machine-guarding eTool. OSHA warns that hands slipping or getting too close to the blade can cause severe cuts or amputations. Its guidance says, “Always wear eye and face protection.”
