The strongest configurations reached pressure levels comparable to concrete blocks, but the result is a 2024 feasibility demonstration—not evidence that the bricks are certified or ready for ordinary load-bearing construction.
Are MIT’s recycled glass bricks as strong as concrete?
In selected tests, they were comparable: MIT reported that a single glass unit withstood pressures similar to a concrete block. That comparison applies to the strongest tested prototypes, not every brick or every manufacturing method. The peer-reviewed study reports different ranges for initial fracture and ultimate strength, and those outcomes should not be treated as interchangeable.
In the paper, average initial-fracture strength ranged from 3.64 to 42.3 MPa, while average ultimate strength ranged from 64.0 to 118 MPa across fabrication methods. Initial fracture marks the onset of failure; ultimate strength is a separate reported endpoint. The wide ranges underscore that the result depends on how a unit is made. Massimino et al., 2024
The strongest results came from units made mostly of printed glass, with a separately manufactured interlocking feature attached to the bottom, according to MIT News. The team physically assembled a curved wall, but the work was a small-run feasibility study. The sources do not establish building-code approval, fire or weather qualification, or performance in a full-scale building.

How the glass bricks are made and assembled
The team used soda-lime glass made from crushed bottles as feedstock for an Evenline Glass 3D Printer 3 (G3DP3), paired with a furnace to melt the glass for printing. The paper identifies the glass batch as Spruce Pine PWV. Each unit has a figure-eight plan with cylindrical nodes and interlocking features. The geometry lets units fit together into a curved wall without adhesive bonding.
Daniel Massimino, lead author of the study, explained: “With the figure-eight shape, we can constrain the bricks while also assembling them into walls that have some curvature.” The team also describes using a removable material between bricks to reduce scratching or cracking where glass surfaces meet. The physical wall demonstrates assembly, not qualification as a building system.
How the three fabrication methods compare
The study examined three ways to form the hollow body and the feature that lets bricks interlock. Its strength ranges vary across these methods; the paper does not provide a single strength figure that represents all three.

- 3D Ice Crystal Texture, Light and Shadow Magic - High transparency glass combined with exquisite ice crystal relief creates a dreamy refraction effect when light passes through, adding an artistic atmosphere to living rooms, shops, cafes, and other spaces. It can transform ordinary walls into personalized features.
- Versatile Partitioning for Open Yet Defined Spaces--Serve dual purposes as both decor and practical divider: these glass bricks gently separate rooms without sacrificing natural light or visibility. The semi-transparent design keeps the space feeling open while adding subtle privacy.
- Size of each glass brick: Length 7.8 inches, width 3.9 inches, and thickness 1.85 inches. Can be used as decoration, as well as to create customized partitions or artistic feature walls
- Multi scenario application, clean and worry free--Smooth and dust-proof surface, only needs to be wiped for daily maintenance; Can be paired with LED light strips to create an atmosphere wall, or used in semi humid areas such as bathrooms and balconies.
- Glass Adhesive Stable Installation - Use high viscosity transparent glass adhesive (glass adhesive is not included in the product) to securely splice, pre cut design reduces adjustment time, and installation is simple.(Note: This product is made of ordinary glass material, please avoid strong impact)
| Method | How the interlocking feature is made | What the study says about potential |
|---|---|---|
| Fully Hollow (FH) | The hollow body is printed. A separate interlocking feature is envisaged, but it was not produced as part of the paper’s FH unit. | The authors describe this as the more immediate path toward implementation. |
| Print-Cast (PC) | A hollow printed body is placed on a mold, then molten glass is cast to form the interlocking component. | The study compared its geometry, surface characteristics, and mechanical performance with the other methods; it does not establish commercial or building-code readiness. |
| Fully Printed (FP) | The hollow body and interlocking geometry are printed together. | The approach could enable an all-glass, transparent circular component, according to the authors. |
The paper also reports print-dimension accuracy of less than 1 mm, with a standard deviation of 0.14–1.6 mm. Those are study measurements, not evidence of construction-site tolerances or performance at building scale. The G3DP3 print volume is 32.5 × 32.5 × 38 cm, a machine specification reported in the paper. Massimino et al., 2024

Why use interlocking glass masonry?
The researchers are exploring a transparent, self-supporting building component that can be taken apart rather than bonded permanently. Avoiding adhesive could make disassembly and material recovery easier; MIT describes the units as potentially reusable or remeltable. These are proposed reuse routes, not demonstrated performance over multiple assembly cycles.
Glass is recyclable, but that general property does not by itself show that this system reduces environmental impact. Kaitlyn Becker, an MIT mechanical engineering professor, said: “Glass is a highly recyclable material.” She also said: “As long as it’s not contaminated, you can recycle glass almost infinitely.” Those statements concern glass generally; the cited study does not quantify lifecycle emissions or carbon savings for these bricks.

Additive manufacturing can produce variable geometries without the tooling costs associated with traditional methods, and may allow aesthetic variation. However, the study tested repeated instances of the same unit geometry; it did not demonstrate structural optimization across a range of designs. The paper’s introduction cites a 2018 IEA estimate that the construction industry accounted for 39% of global greenhouse-gas emissions. That is historical context cited by the authors, not a current estimate or a measure of the bricks’ climate impact.
What the results mean for construction
The findings establish that crushed-glass feedstock can be used to make interlocking masonry prototypes with promising mechanical test results. They do not establish that the prototypes can replace concrete blocks in a building. The MIT report says the researchers were pursuing larger, self-supporting structures; the cited publications do not document code approval, full-scale building use, or commercial supply.
