Northern Michigan University announced on Oct. 16, 2026, a partnership with Miron Construction Co. that will provide scholarships for Construction Management students and fund an annual, hands-on construction career event for high-school students in Wisconsin’s Green Bay and Fox Cities region.
What the NMU–Miron partnership provides
The agreement establishes the Miron Construction Scholarship for three full-time junior or senior students in NMU’s Construction Management program during each of the next three academic years. The announcement does not disclose the scholarship’s dollar amount, so prospective applicants should rely on the official application terms when they are published.

Miron will also fund an annual career-exploration event for high-school students in the Green Bay and Fox Cities area. The event is intended to use hands-on activities to introduce construction management and skilled-trade careers, giving students an opportunity to see the work beyond a classroom description.

Why the partnership matters to NMU’s program
NMU executive director of Business Engagement and Economic Development David Nyberg said Construction Management enrollment has increased 65 percent over the five years referenced in the university’s announcement. The new support arrives as the program expands and as employers seek more graduates with practical project experience.

Nyberg described the investment as an example of industry and the university advancing shared priorities. The partnership extends a recruiting relationship that has connected Miron with NMU students and alumni for years rather than creating a one-time naming arrangement.
How Miron’s recruiting relationship has developed
Miron reports that about 15 years ago it typically hired one or two NMU project-management graduates. It now employs about 15, illustrating the growth of the university-to-employer pipeline. Miron has operated as a family-owned company since 1918 and has approximately 1,700 employees, according to company background reported by NMU.

Todd Sabourin, a Miron senior vice president based in the company’s Marquette office, said NMU students’ education relies more heavily on real-world applications than on theory. He said both organizations aimed to create practical value for students rather than simply attach company and university names to a scholarship.
From coursework and internships to project management
Tristan Pauna’s route into full-time work
NMU alumnus Tristan Pauna ’25 BS said his exposure to Miron helped lead him to the Construction Management program and the company’s internship opportunities. His internship experience continued for three years and transitioned into a full-time project-manager position after graduation.

Trevor Poupore’s return to Marquette
Trevor Poupore ’16 BS is another NMU graduate working as a Miron project manager. He returned to Marquette, providing an example of how the relationship can support regional employment as well as initial placement after college.
These individual pathways demonstrate the sequence the partnership is designed to encourage: academic preparation, internships, employer relationships and a construction career in the Upper Peninsula or nearby regions. The announcement does not provide a scholarship-to-hire conversion rate, so the two alumni examples should not be read as a statistical placement guarantee.

Who can apply and when
The scholarship is limited to full-time NMU Construction Management students who are juniors or seniors. NMU says applications for the Miron Construction Scholarship and other donor-funded scholarships are expected to open in January for the 2027–28 academic year.

- Confirm the live eligibility rules. Check enrollment status, class standing, deadlines and any required materials when the application is posted.
- Review the award terms. The announcement does not state the amount, renewal conditions or how funds will be distributed.
- Use career programming as a separate opportunity. High-school students in the Green Bay and Fox Cities region should look for the annual event’s schedule and registration details when Miron and NMU release them.
Regional talent-retention goals
Sabourin said the organizations hope the partnership will encourage more students to explore construction, complete internships, build relationships in the Upper Peninsula and find rewarding work without leaving the region. The high-school event broadens that effort beyond current NMU students by presenting construction management and skilled trades before college decisions are made.
For NMU, the arrangement combines direct financial assistance with employer contact and earlier career exposure. For Miron, it creates a structured way to develop a regional talent pipeline while maintaining a relationship that has already produced alumni hires. The available announcement establishes the scholarship’s three-year duration, student eligibility and event geography, but not the award value or a measured employment outcome.
