A mini LED matrix clock is a DIY Arduino project built around a 32×8 MAX7219 dot-matrix display, a Nano-class microcontroller, a real-time clock (RTC) module, and two pushbuttons. It can show large or small numerals, seconds, scrolling transitions, words, dates, adjustable brightness, and 12- or 24-hour time.

The project is suitable for a careful beginner, but the original design was published on June 12, 2019 and tested with Arduino IDE 1.6.5. Treat it as a proven project concept—not a guaranteed modern, plug-and-play recipe. In particular, its hardware list identifies a DS3231M RTC while the displayed sketch creates an RTC_DS1307 object. Verify the exact RTC board and update the code or library as necessary.

Quick verdict

Question Answer
Is it beginner-friendly? Yes, if the display, RTC, buttons, and complete sketch are tested separately.
Is it a finished product? No. It is a customizable DIY electronics build.
Does it work offline? Yes. An RTC preserves the time without Wi-Fi.
Does it automatically synchronize time? Not in the original RTC-only version.
Main compatibility risk The old libraries and the DS3231M/DS1307 mismatch.

The original project and its source are documented on Hackster.io.

What the clock is

Unlike a seven-segment clock, a dot-matrix clock forms characters from individual LEDs. The 32 columns and 8 rows provide 256 LED positions, allowing the firmware to draw numerals, letters, punctuation, dates, and animations.

  • Arduino Nano: runs the clock logic, reads the buttons, and sends display commands.
  • 32×8 MAX7219 matrix: displays the characters through four chained 8×8 driver sections.
  • RTC module: keeps time while the Nano is reset or unplugged.
  • Two momentary buttons: select modes and enter settings.
  • USB and 5 V power: provide programming and operation.
  • Case or enclosure: protects the electronics and controls viewing angle.

This is not a standardized retail kit. Boards sold as “32×8 MAX7219” can differ in connector layout, orientation, scan behavior, and build quality. The original author used a folded four-in-one module instead of four separate 8×8 matrices.

Display modes and features

The published sketch demonstrates:

  • Large clock digits.
  • Small digits with seconds.
  • Scrolling or sliding transitions.
  • Time written in words.
  • Date display.
  • 12-hour and 24-hour formats.
  • Adjustable brightness.
  • A random mode that periodically changes the display style.
  • Button-operated setup menus.

These are features of the original project, not guarantees for every replacement sketch, matrix module, or library version.

Parts and tools

Part Quantity Selection notes
Nano R3 or compatible Nano-class board 1 The original targets an Arduino Nano R3.
32×8 MAX7219 LED matrix 1 Confirm the driver, dimensions, connector labels, and orientation.
RTC module 1 Identify whether it is DS1307, DS3231, or DS3231M before choosing the code.
Momentary pushbuttons 2 The original sketch uses digital pins 2 and 3.
Jumper or hookup wire As needed Use short, secure power wiring.
USB cable and stable 5 V supply 1 each The matrix can draw substantially more current at high brightness.
Breadboard or perfboard Optional Use a breadboard for testing and perfboard or a PCB for a permanent build.
Soldering iron Optional Likely needed for a durable enclosed assembly.

When choosing parts, verify the matrix driver chip, DIN/CLK/CS labels, supply voltage, RTC chip, header inclusion, battery type, and return policy. Do not assume every board marketed as “DS3231” is identical. Some RTC breakouts include charging circuits intended for rechargeable cells; others are designed for a non-rechargeable CR2032.

How the circuit works

The Nano controls the matrix using a three-wire serial interface. The RTC communicates with the Nano over I2C, while the buttons use digital inputs. The RTC is separate from the display controller: the Nano draws the clock face, but the RTC supplies the time that survives a reset or power interruption.

The source declares the driver as:

#include "LedControl.h"
LedControl lc = LedControl(12, 11, 10, 4);

The final value configures four MAX72xx devices. It initializes each with shutdown disabled, an intensity value, and a cleared display. The default intensity is 7 on a 0–15 scale.

Buttons and pull-ups

The original code creates its buttons as:

Button buttonA = Button(2, BUTTON_PULLUP);
Button buttonB = Button(3, BUTTON_PULLUP);

In a typical pull-up arrangement, an unpressed button reads HIGH and a pressed button connects the input to ground, producing LOW. Button-library behavior and debouncing depend on the version installed, so test the inputs independently if the controls behave erratically.

Matrix orientation

The source maps the display in reverse device order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Columns 0–7 use device 3.
  • Columns 8–15 use device 2.
  • Columns 16–23 use device 1.
  • Columns 24–31 use device 0.

This is why a physically reversed or differently chained module may show mirrored, scrambled, or backward characters. The remedy may be rewiring, reversing device addresses, rotating or mirroring the font mapping, or changing the coordinate logic.

Software setup and the RTC issue

The original sketch depends on LedControl, FontLEDClock, RTClib, and Button. Install the project’s libraries or compatible replacements through the Arduino IDE, then select the correct board, processor, and serial port. The 2019 statement that the sketch was tested with Arduino IDE 1.6.5 is a compatibility warning, not a description of the current IDE.

The displayed RTC code includes:

#include <Wire.h>
#include "RTClib.h"
RTC_DS1307 ds1307;

However, the hardware list identifies a DS3231M. Do not silently mix those descriptions. Confirm the chip on the board and use the matching RTClib class and initialization code. A board that contains a DS3231 should normally be tested with the DS3231 class; a DS1307 object may compile yet fail to communicate correctly or expose the wrong behavior.

The original fallback is:

if (! ds1307.isrunning()) {
  ds1307.adjust(DateTime(__DATE__, __TIME__));
}

This sets the RTC to the sketch’s compilation timestamp, not necessarily the upload time. Verify the clock immediately after first boot. Recompiling later changes that fallback timestamp, so do not use it as an automatic routine for normal timekeeping.

Build it in stages

  1. Identify the hardware. Record the exact Nano, RTC, and matrix markings. Confirm the matrix dimensions, connector labels, RTC type, and battery arrangement.
  2. Test the matrix alone. Upload a minimal MAX7219 test. Confirm that all LEDs work, the orientation is correct, intensity changes, and the Nano does not reset during display updates.
  3. Test the RTC alone. Run an I2C scanner or time-reading sketch. Confirm SDA, SCL, power, address, date, and time. Remove power briefly and check that the RTC continues advancing.
  4. Add the buttons. Wire each button between its input and ground when using internal pull-ups. Test for false presses and switch bounce.
  5. Upload the complete clock. Compile first, upload over USB, watch the startup sequence, set the time, and exercise every mode and brightness level.
  6. Run a long test. Operate it for several hours before soldering or enclosing it. This reveals resets, power drops, heat, drift, and stuck controls.

At startup, the original code performs a matrix test, displays a software-version message and “Hello!”, initializes the drivers, sets brightness, clears the devices, and enters the selected clock mode. A startup test proves display communication; it does not prove that the RTC or buttons work.

Common problems and fixes

Blank display

Check 5 V and ground at the matrix, then run the minimal display test. Confirm the LedControl pin order, DIN versus DOUT, chip-select wiring, and the configured device count. A module connected at the wrong end of a chain can remain blank even when power is present.

Scrambled or mirrored characters

Test individual coordinates and compare them with the source’s reverse device mapping. Reverse device addressing, rotate or mirror the font data, or alter the physical orientation. This is a predictable module-variation problem, not necessarily a damaged display.

RTC not detected

Run an I2C scanner, check SDA and SCL for reversal, confirm the address and ground, and use the correct library class for the physical chip. If the board is DS3231 but the code declares RTC_DS1307, correct that mismatch before troubleshooting further.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Time resets after unplugging

Inspect the backup battery, holder contacts, and charging design. Also check whether the sketch is repeatedly applying the __DATE__/__TIME__ fallback. Confirm the battery type required by the specific breakout.

Buttons fail or act randomly

Test each input with a small serial-print sketch. Confirm that the switch connects the input to ground, use INPUT_PULLUP in a simplified test, check for pin conflicts, and add debouncing if required. A button held during startup may also change the initial mode.

The Nano resets at high brightness

Use a stable 5 V supply and short, adequately sized power and ground wires. Avoid relying on a weak USB port for a bright matrix. Reduce intensity while testing and consider suitable bulk capacitance near the matrix. A related ESP8266 design lists a 1000 μF capacitor, but that is design-specific and not a universal fix.

The sketch exceeds memory

Remove unused modes, store fonts in program memory, reduce font tables, remove word-clock support, or use a more capable board. Do not add Wi-Fi features to the original Nano build without measuring memory use.

GODIYMODULES DC 4.5V-5.5V 6-bit Digital Circuit Clock kit, Electronic Clock Teaching and Practical Training, Welding and DIY Parts Production
  • Please refer to the Product guides and documents below for product installation documentation
  • This product is a 24-hour digital circuit clock, using CD4518, CD4511, CD4081, CD4013, CD4060 and other chips, the circuit does not contain a microcontroller, so there is no program, hours, minutes and seconds can be calibrated, without alarm function.
  • This kit mainly consists of a second signal generator, counter, decoding display and time calibration circuit. The second pulse is a 1HZ square wave signal obtained by precise frequency division of a high frequency signal generator, which is more accurate in timekeeping.
  • Can be used for teaching practical training welding, very suitable for DIY enthusiasts
  • Stable product performance, long service life

Important edge cases

  • At 1:00 in 12-hour mode, the display may need special positioning and clearing for the single-digit hour.
  • The 12:59-to-1:00 transition must clear the old leading digit; otherwise remnants can remain.
  • Confirm how the chosen code represents midnight and noon—such as 00:00, 12:00 AM, or another convention.
  • An RTC-only clock does not automatically apply daylight-saving changes.
  • Let the RTC/date library handle leap years and month lengths rather than adding untested date arithmetic.
  • Maximum brightness can be uncomfortable at night and increases power demand.
  • Oblique viewing angles may make LEDs appear uneven or washed out.
  • An enclosure should leave ventilation around the matrix driver and regulator.

Offline RTC or Wi-Fi time?

The RTC-only Nano build is the best first version: it starts quickly, works without a network, has simpler wiring, and keeps credentials out of the device. Its disadvantages are manual time setting, possible RTC drift, battery maintenance, and no automatic daylight-saving adjustment.

A related ESP8266/NTP project adds Wi-Fi synchronization, a DS3231 RTC, buttons, a light-dependent resistor, and additional memory handling. It is a different complexity tier: Wi-Fi credentials, 3.3 V logic and power considerations, network startup failures, and older software assumptions all need attention. The project is described as work in progress, so treat it as a reference rather than a drop-in upgrade.

Board and enclosure improvements

The original Nano R3 is the safest starting target. A Nano Every is a current 5 V Nano-format candidate with an ATmega4809, 48 KB flash, 6 KB SRAM, SPI, I2C, USB, and a 45×18 mm form factor. The U.S. Arduino listing showed $12.90 without headers and $14.90 with headers when checked on August 18, 2026. These are dated U.S. prices, excluding any applicable shipping or tax. The older sketch and libraries are not guaranteed to compile unchanged on a Nano Every.

For a breadboard, the version with headers is convenient. For a thin enclosure or custom PCB, headers may add unwanted height. Build and test on a breadboard before committing to perfboard or fabrication.

The matrix can be mounted behind a dark front panel or in a small ventilated case. If adapting it to a transparent angled screen, the related holographic matrix clock uses mirrored content and an angled optical arrangement to create an illusion. It is not a volumetric hologram; viewing angle, black surroundings, and screen spacing determine the effect.

Recommended path

Build the original offline architecture first: a verified 32×8 MAX7219 module, Nano R3 or validated Nano-class replacement, and an RTC whose chip matches the corrected code. Test power, matrix, RTC, buttons, and full firmware in that order. Only after the clock is stable should you add an enclosure, ambient-light dimming, custom fonts, a PCB, or Wi-Fi/NTP synchronization.
