A Milwaukee M18 battery that will not charge is often paused rather than permanently failed. On the M18 Six-Pack Charger, a flashing red indicator means the pack is outside the charger’s charging-temperature range; charging resumes when the pack returns to the permitted range. If no indicator appears, Milwaukee’s manual directs you to reseat the pack, unplug the charger for at least two minutes, reconnect it, and try again. “M18” identifies Milwaukee’s battery platform, not one single pack or one single charger design. Before interpreting a light or a charging time, read the model number on the battery and on the charger. Then open the operator manual for that specific charger and the instructions for the pack if Milwaukee supplies separate guidance.

- Record the complete battery model, such as the model printed on the REDLITHIUM label, not just “M18.”
- Record the charger model, including whether it is a single-port, multi-port, rapid, or Super Charger model.
- Check that the pack and charger are both Milwaukee M18 products intended to work together. Milwaukee says authentic M18 batteries must be charged on Milwaukee M18 chargers.
- Keep the model and serial/date information available if you need a warranty decision or service authorization.
Do not disassemble the pack, bypass the charger, or attempt to repair cells. A lithium-ion pack contains electrical and thermal protection that is not intended for owner service.
What the charger indicator is telling you
Use the light as a diagnostic clue, not as proof that the battery is defective. The following interpretation is specific to the M18 Six-Pack Charger instructions cited by Milwaukee.

A light pattern on another charger model may not have the same meaning. If the charger’s manual gives a different interpretation, follow that document.
Step-by-step troubleshooting sequence
1. Let a temperature pause clear
A flashing red light on the cited Six-Pack Charger is a temperature warning, not a charging-progress indication. The charger pauses charging when the pack is outside its permitted temperature range. Once the pack is within range, normal charging can take place.
Move the pack away from the conditions that made it unusually hot or cold and allow it to return to a normal indoor temperature naturally. Do not use an external heat source, ice, water, or another improvised method to force the temperature to change. The manual notes that hot or cold packs may take longer to charge, so an immediate retry is not a reliable test.
After the pack has had time to return to the charger’s allowable range, insert it again and observe the indicator. If the red flashing condition clears and charging begins, the original interruption was temperature-related. If the same condition persists after the pack has stabilized, continue with the model-specific manual and the service path below.

2. Reseat the battery correctly
If no indicator appears, the Six-Pack Charger manual says to check that the battery is fully seated and reinsert it. Remove the pack, align it with the charger’s rails and contacts, and press it into place until it is fully engaged according to the charger’s design. Do not force it or continue if the pack or charger is visibly damaged.
Look at the indicator immediately after reinsertion. A light that appears after proper seating points to a connection or insertion issue rather than proving that the cells have failed. A dark indicator means you should perform the charger reset specified by the manual instead of repeatedly inserting the pack.
3. Perform the two-minute charger reset
When the indicator remains off, follow the manual’s exact reset sequence:
- Remove the battery pack or packs from the charger.
- Unplug the charger from its power source.
- Leave it unplugged for at least two minutes.
- Plug the charger back in.
- Reinsert the battery pack and watch for the indicator.
The two-minute interval is part of Milwaukee’s documented procedure; a quick unplug-and-replug is not the same test. If the light still does not come on after this sequence, the manual directs you to contact a Milwaukee service facility.
4. Confirm charger compatibility
Use a Milwaukee M18 charger with an authentic M18 battery. A charger that fits physically is not automatically an approved charger for the pack. Compatibility matters for the charging controls, temperature monitoring, and protection circuitry.
If you are considering a different Milwaukee M18 charger, match it to the exact pack family and follow that charger’s manual. Do not treat a universal, altered, or non-Milwaukee charger as an equivalent substitute merely because the battery slides into it.

5. Separate a battery symptom from a charger symptom
The title “M18 battery won’t charge” does not identify which component is responsible. Use the pattern of the indicator and the scope of the failure to decide what to do next, without opening either device.

Why a hot or cold pack can appear to be “dead”
Charging a lithium-ion battery outside its permitted temperature range can be unsafe and can shorten service life. The charger therefore pauses instead of applying current while the pack is too hot or too cold. The flashing red indicator on the cited Six-Pack Charger communicates that pause.

Temperature can change during ordinary work. A pack that has just powered a demanding tool may be warmer than the surrounding air; a pack stored in a cold vehicle may be colder than the charger’s operating range. The charger may therefore behave differently at the end of a work shift than it does later indoors. The relevant test is whether the indicator returns to normal after the pack has naturally reached the permitted range, not whether it starts charging immediately after use.
Do not infer a permanent fault from one temperature-related pause. Conversely, do not keep cycling a pack indefinitely if the red flashing condition does not clear after the pack has stabilized. At that point, use the exact manual and Milwaukee’s service route.
Published charging times are not a fault-recovery promise
Milwaukee publishes charging-duration figures for specific M18 packs when used with the M18 Super Charger. These are room-temperature test results, and Milwaukee says actual results may vary. They describe a normal charging cycle; they do not show that a pack with a fault can be revived or that every M18 charger will match the times.

A different pack, charger, ambient temperature, or starting state can produce a different duration. If a pack has no indicator or remains paused, comparing it with a published time cannot diagnose the cause.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact Milwaukee
Use Milwaukee’s service route when the documented low-risk checks do not restore an indicator or normal charging. For the Six-Pack Charger, that point is reached when the light remains off after full reinsertion and the two-minute unplug reset. A pack that repeatedly remains outside the charging range after it has had time to stabilize also needs manufacturer diagnosis rather than improvised repair.
Milwaukee provides an eService route and service-center options. Its service information states that repairs performed under warranty are covered at no charge, but eligibility must be confirmed for the specific product. The warranty page indicates that coverage varies by product and depends on details such as the model, serial information, and date. An unidentified M18 pack cannot be assumed to have a particular warranty term.
- Gather the battery model, charger model, serial/date information, purchase documentation if available, and a description of the indicator behavior.
- Check the warranty status for that specific pack before authorizing a paid repair or buying a replacement.
- Use Milwaukee’s official eService or authorized service-center process for diagnosis.
- Describe the exact sequence you performed: temperature pause observed, pack reseated, charger unplugged for at least two minutes, and the resulting indicator state.
Service staff can then determine whether the pack, charger, or another condition requires repair. Do not ship or hand over a visibly damaged lithium-ion pack without following Milwaukee’s handling instructions.

Replacement is a later decision, not the first response to a flashing red light. Match any replacement to the exact M18 pack model and review warranty eligibility first. A new pack will not solve a charger-side problem, and a new charger will not necessarily solve a pack that fails its temperature or protection checks.
Consider a replacement pack only after these checks
- The pack has returned to a normal temperature but repeatedly will not charge.
- You followed the exact charger instructions for seating and reset.
- The charger is a Milwaukee M18 model approved for the battery.
- Milwaukee service or the warranty process has determined that replacement is appropriate, or coverage has been ruled out.
Consider a charger replacement only after these checks
- The charger’s indicator remains dark after the documented reset.
- The same charger shows the problem across compatible packs, or Milwaukee identifies the charger as the failed component.
- You have confirmed that the replacement charger is a genuine Milwaukee M18 model suitable for the packs you use.
Buying on the basis of a single symptom can leave the original fault unresolved. The model number, indicator behavior, temperature history, and warranty decision are more useful than the age of the pack alone.

Common situations and the correct response
“The pack was just used and now the red light flashes.”
That matches the temperature-pause behavior documented for the Six-Pack Charger. Let the pack return naturally to the permitted range, then retry. Do not interpret the first flashing-red event as proof that the cells are permanently damaged.
“Nothing lights up when I insert the battery.”
Fully reseat the pack. If the indicator remains off, remove the pack, unplug the charger for at least two minutes, reconnect it, and reinsert the pack. If it is still dark, the manual directs you to Milwaukee service.
“The charger works with one pack but not another.”
Treat the packs as separate diagnostic cases. Check the non-charging pack’s temperature and model-specific instructions, then verify its warranty details. Do not assume that the working pack proves the other pack must be discarded; use Milwaukee’s service process to identify the cause.

Physical fit is not sufficient. Milwaukee directs owners to charge authentic M18 batteries on Milwaukee M18 chargers. Confirm the charger model and its manual before use.
“The pack is outside the published charging time.”
Published times are room-temperature results for named packs on the M18 Super Charger, and actual results may vary. They are not a universal time limit and do not diagnose a fault. Check the indicator and follow the troubleshooting sequence instead.
A compact decision path
- Identify the exact battery and charger models.
- Read the charger’s own manual, noting that the Six-Pack Charger’s light sequence is model-specific.
- If the indicator flashes red, allow the pack to return to the permitted temperature range and retry.
- If no indicator appears, reseat the pack.
- If it remains dark, remove the pack, unplug the charger for at least two minutes, reconnect it, and reinsert the pack.
- If the indicator is still absent, stop owner troubleshooting and contact a Milwaukee service facility.
