Ipe is the premium benchmark; Cumaru can provide a similar dense-hardwood approach at a supplier-reported 20–30% lower price. Cedar and pressure-treated pine remain practical choices when low initial cost, local stock, or easier cutting matters more than maximum longevity.
The right choice depends on exposure, board grade and dimensions, delivered—not catalog—price, installation labor, maintenance expectations, and documentation of species and origin. The figures below concern outdoor decking. Do not transfer them automatically to flooring, structural lumber, or another application.

What “Brazilian hardwood” means in a decking decision
Brazilian hardwood is a group of species, not a single standardized product. Ipe, Cumaru, Jatoba, Massaranduba, Garapa, Muiracatiara, and Angelim Vermelho are sold under different trade names and can differ in density, color, workability, availability, and price. Even boards sold under the same common name can vary by grade, drying, dimensions, and provenance.

Deck exposure also matters. Sun, rain, freeze-thaw cycles, standing water, poor ventilation, soil contact, traffic, and the quality of the supporting frame all influence performance. A hardness number describes resistance to indentation; it does not guarantee a particular service life. The supplier estimates cited here assume proper installation and typical outdoor exposure.
Hardness and outdoor life: what the available comparison shows
Ipe Woods USA reports the following Janka hardness and outdoor-life estimates. These are supplier-authored estimates, not warranties or independent comparative test results. “Up to” is an upper estimate under the stated assumptions, not a promise for every deck.
| Decking material | Supplier-reported Janka hardness | Supplier-estimated outdoor life | Relative maintenance description | Installation note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ipe | 3,680 lbf | Up to 75 years | Described as low maintenance compared with cedar and pressure-treated pine | Dense boards require predrilling |
| Cumaru | 3,330 lbf | Up to 50 years | Described as low maintenance compared with cedar and pressure-treated pine | Dense boards require predrilling |
| Western Red Cedar | 350 lbf | Up to 20 years | Higher maintenance relative to the cited hardwoods | Use the fastening and finishing system specified for the product |
| Pressure-treated pine | 690 lbf | Up to 15 years | Higher maintenance relative to the cited hardwoods | Use the treatment-compatible fastening and finishing system specified for the product |
The gap is substantial: the reported hardness of Ipe is more than ten times the cedar figure, while Cumaru is also far harder than either cedar or pressure-treated pine. That density can resist dents and wear, but it also makes boards harder to saw, drill, and fasten. It does not eliminate the need for drainage, sound framing, correct fastener spacing, or inspection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIpe
Ipe is the hardest and longest-lived option in the cited supplier comparison. It suits a deck where abrasion resistance and a long replacement interval are priorities, provided the budget and installation capability support a dense hardwood. Predrilling is required, and the installer should select bits, fasteners, and a fastening pattern as a coordinated system rather than improvising on site.
Cumaru
Cumaru has a reported hardness of 3,330 lbf and an estimated outdoor life of up to 50 years. The same supplier describes it as typically 20–30% less expensive than Ipe. That is a supplier comparison, not a guaranteed market-wide discount; dimensions, grade, freight, and local supply can erase or widen the difference.
Western Red Cedar
Cedar is much softer at the cited 350 lbf. Its advantages are usually easier machining, lighter handling, and lower initial material pricing than premium Brazilian hardwood. The supplier’s estimate of up to 20 years assumes proper installation and typical exposure. Cedar’s actual service life depends heavily on water management, coating choices, ventilation, and whether boards remain wet.
Pressure-treated pine
Pressure-treated pine records 690 lbf in the cited comparison and an estimated outdoor life of up to 15 years. It is commonly selected where initial material cost and local availability dominate the decision. Treatment type, retention level, end-cut treatment, fastener compatibility, and local code requirements must be checked for the specific product. The estimate is not a universal rating for every treatment process or climate.

Natural durability is more than a hardness number
Janka hardness measures the force needed to press a standardized steel ball into wood. It helps explain why dense species resist dents and why they are difficult to drill, but it does not measure decay resistance, dimensional movement, fastener holding, or the condition of the supporting structure.
Service life depends on keeping water from being trapped against the boards, allowing the deck to dry, separating wood from soil where required, using suitable fasteners, and maintaining the frame. A deck built with premium boards can still fail early if joists stay wet, end grain is left vulnerable, or debris blocks drainage.
The Brazilian Forest Service’s 2021 summary of a natural-durability guide covered 12 native species, including Cumaru and Massaranduba. The agency said the studied woods came from managed forest plans and showed high durability and construction potential. That summary describes particular research and studied sources; it does not establish that every board sold under a species name has identical grade, provenance, moisture condition, or performance.
Brazilian species and the price evidence available
The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) Tropical Timber Market Report for 1–15 June 2024 lists Brazilian domestic green ex-mill sawnwood prices credited to the STCP Data Bank. These figures are in U.S. dollars per cubic metre and describe Brazil’s domestic producer market. They are not current North American retail prices, export quotes, delivered prices, or installed-deck costs.
| Species or category | Condition or market description | Brazil domestic ex-mill price (US$/m³) |
|---|---|---|
| Ipe | Green sawnwood | $1,948 |
| Jatoba | Green sawnwood | $1,045 |
| Massaranduba | Green sawnwood | $928 |
| Muiracatiara | Green sawnwood | $924 |
| Angelim Vermelho | Green sawnwood | $917 |
| Mixed red and white woods | Green sawnwood | $592 |
| Eucalyptus | Air-dried | $332 |
| Pine | Air-dried | $272 |
| Pine | Kiln-dried | $307 |
The report separately lists export sawnwood prices. Do not combine those series with the domestic figures above. A Brazilian ex-mill number excludes the freight, import costs, currency effects, distributor margin, grading, machining, waste, fasteners, labor, and tax that shape a delivered deck quote.
ITTO identifies Ipe, Cumaru, Garapa, and Jatoba among species sought in international consumer markets. That demonstrates trade relevance, not guaranteed local inventory. The Brazilian Forest Service’s LPF database is intended to improve information and market access for Brazilian species, including less familiar woods; it is a useful reference for names and characteristics, not a stock list for a particular dealer.
Upfront price versus the cost of owning the deck
Premium hardwood normally carries a higher material price than cedar or pressure-treated pine. Ipe Woods USA characterizes Ipe as premium-priced, Cumaru as typically 20–30% less than Ipe, and cedar and pressure-treated pine as lower-upfront-price choices. Those are relative descriptions rather than a project quotation.

Installed cost can change the ranking. A dense board may require more labor, specialized bits, predrilling, slower cutting, and different fasteners. Freight can be significant when stock is not local. Conversely, a lower-priced board may require more frequent cleaning, coating, repair, or replacement. Without dated, like-for-like estimates, it is not defensible to say Brazilian hardwood always has a lower lifetime cost.
Build a comparable quote
- Specify the same scope. Give every supplier the deck area, board width and thickness, edge profile, grade, pattern, stairs, borders, fascia, and waste allowance.
- Separate material from installation. Request line items for decking boards, framing, fasteners, delivery, disposal, labor, and finishing. A material-only price cannot be compared with an installed price.
- Ask about conditioning. Confirm whether boards are green, air-dried, kiln-dried, or otherwise conditioned for the intended installation. Moisture condition affects weight, movement, machining, and delivery.
- Price the fastening system. Dense hardwood may require predrilling and a different screw or hidden-fastener system than cedar or treated pine. Include bits, countersinks, replacement blades, and labor in the estimate.
- Model maintenance honestly. Price the cleaning, coating, inspection, and labor you actually plan to perform. If you allow the surface to weather naturally, state that choice rather than assuming a finish.
- Use a replacement horizon that matches the evidence. The cited “up to” lives are supplier estimates under typical exposure, not guaranteed dates. Treat them as planning ranges, not as a financial warranty.
Availability and delivery: why location changes the answer
Brazilian hardwood is neither universally scarce nor universally easy to obtain. Availability changes with geography, species, board dimensions, grade, order size, supplier inventory, import conditions, and the date of the quote. A dealer may have Ipe in one thickness but require a special order for another; Cumaru or Jatoba may be easier to find in one region and absent in another.
Ask for a current written quote that states the species, grade, dimensions, quantity, moisture condition, delivery location, freight, taxes, and quote validity period. “In stock” should mean enough boards in the exact specification for the project, not merely a species page on a website.
Before paying a deposit, request product identity and origin documentation. Species names alone do not prove legality or responsible harvest. Ask what chain-of-custody, legality, and origin records apply to the shipment, and retain those documents with the project file. The Brazilian Forest Service material supports research from managed forest plans, but it does not certify a specific supplier or board.
Installation requirements for dense hardwood decking
The cited supplier specifically says Ipe and Cumaru require predrilling. Plan the drilling operation before boards arrive: choose a bit and countersink suited to the selected fastener, test the combination on an offcut, and verify that the fastener manufacturer permits use with the wood species and exposure.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Match the installation system to the board thickness, fastening method, and frame. Follow the decking and fastener manufacturers’ instructions for spacing, edge distances, ventilation, end joints, and movement. Do not copy a softwood nailing pattern onto a dense hardwood deck without checking the system requirements.
Inspect boards on delivery for splits, twist, damaged ends, inconsistent dimensions, and labeling. Store them supported and protected from standing water while allowing the supplier’s recommended conditioning process. Keep cut ends and any required treatment consistent with the chosen product system.

Predrilling adds time, but forcing screws without it can split boards, damage heads, or leave fasteners under-driven. Budget labor for accurate layout and drilling rather than treating it as an optional finishing step.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Maintenance and appearance choices
The supplier describes Ipe and Cumaru as low maintenance relative to cedar and pressure-treated pine, but “low maintenance” does not mean maintenance-free. Every deck needs debris removal, drainage checks, and inspection of boards, fasteners, stairs, and the supporting frame.
Recommended Free Tools
Decide in advance whether you want the original color preserved or are willing to let the surface weather. Finishing products, preparation, re-coating intervals, and compatibility vary by species and manufacturer. Obtain product-specific instructions rather than applying a generic cedar schedule to a dense tropical hardwood.
Water management is the central durability task. Keep leaves and soil from accumulating, make sure water can drain, and correct any framing or flashing condition that keeps boards damp. A finish cannot compensate for trapped moisture or a failing frame.
How to choose among Ipe, Cumaru, cedar, and treated pine
| Project priority | Most defensible starting point | Reasoning and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum reported hardness and the longest cited outdoor-life estimate | Ipe | Highest cited Janka value and up to 75-year supplier estimate; verify budget, freight, stock, and predrilling labor. |
| Dense hardwood with a lower quoted price than Ipe | Cumaru | 3,330 lbf and up to 50 years in the supplier comparison; the 20–30% price difference is not guaranteed locally. |
| Lower initial cost and easier local sourcing | Western Red Cedar | Lower cited hardness and shorter estimated life, but often simpler to machine; confirm grade, moisture exposure, and maintenance plan. |
| Lowest-cost conventional decking path | Pressure-treated pine | Lower cited upfront price and 690 lbf; verify treatment specification, compatible hardware, and expected replacement or repair needs. |
Choose Ipe when the project can support premium material, specialized installation, and documented sourcing, and when resistance to wear is worth paying for. Choose Cumaru when a dense hardwood is desired but the Ipe quote is too high, while recognizing that the local spread may differ from the supplier’s comparison. Choose cedar or treated pine when local availability, initial budget, lighter machining, or a familiar installation system matters more than the longest estimated life.
A practical buying checklist
- Define exposure. Record sun, rainfall, snow, freeze-thaw conditions, shade, drainage, foot traffic, and any soil contact.
- Define the product. Select species, grade, board dimensions, profile, moisture condition, and finish approach before requesting prices.
- Obtain at least two comparable local quotes. Date each quote and keep material-only and installed totals separate.
- Verify identity. Ask how the supplier identifies the species and grade, and request documentation for origin, legality, and any chain of custody.
- Confirm inventory. Verify that the exact quantity and dimensions are available, including replacement boards for defects and future repairs.
- Plan installation. Confirm predrilling, fastener compatibility, tools, labor time, storage, and the manufacturer’s requirements for the decking system.
- Inspect before installation. Compare the shipment with the quote and reject or document damaged, mislabeled, or unsuitable boards before cutting.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using hardness as a service-life guarantee
Problem: A high Janka number is treated as proof that a deck will last a fixed number of years.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Fix: Use hardness to anticipate wear and machining difficulty, then evaluate drainage, installation, exposure, grade, and maintenance separately. The cited life figures are conditional supplier estimates.

Comparing an ex-mill figure with a retail quote
Problem: A June 2024 Brazil domestic price is presented as today’s delivered local cost.
Fix: Treat the ITTO figures as market context only. Get a dated quote for the same dimensions, grade, quantity, delivery point, and labor scope.
Assuming a species name proves origin or legality
Problem: The common name is used as a substitute for documentation.

Skipping predrilling
Problem: Fasteners are driven directly into Ipe or Cumaru, causing split ends, damaged heads, or inconsistent seating.
Fix: Include predrilling and countersinking in the labor plan, test the bit-and-fastener combination, and follow the selected system’s instructions.
Calling a deck “low maintenance” without defining the finish
Problem: A buyer expects the original color to remain without cleaning or recoating.
Fix: Decide whether natural weathering is acceptable and obtain species-specific preparation and coating instructions for the chosen appearance.
Bottom line for a deck project
Brazilian hardwood is worth its premium when the project values dense, wear-resistant boards, can absorb higher material and installation costs, and has a reliable source with clear documentation. Ipe offers the highest cited hardness and outdoor-life estimate; Cumaru is a substantial alternative with a supplier-reported 20–30% lower price. Western Red Cedar and pressure-treated pine make more sense when initial cost, local availability, or simpler machining outweighs the benefits of a denser hardwood.
Make the decision from current, comparable local quotes—not from a species name, a Janka number, or an ex-mill market table. Verify the exact product, delivered cost, installation requirements, exposure conditions, and origin records before ordering.
