The proposed area runs from the junction of Via Giuseppe Frua and Via Seprio to Piazza Sicilia, with a further stretch between Via Luigi Sacco and Via dei Gracchi. The City has not announced when the zone will open.
Where the pedestrian zone is planned
The City’s announcement of 3 October 2026 describes two connected stretches: Via Luigi Sacco from its intersection with Via Giuseppe Frua and Via Seprio to Piazza Sicilia, then a further section between Via Luigi Sacco and Via dei Gracchi. The plan concerns the De Angeli district in Municipio 7. Comune di Milano announced the Giunta’s approval; the announcement does not reproduce the resolution text.

Why Milan approved the project
The stated purpose is to remove cars from the entrances to Istituto Comprensivo Umberto Eco and make pupils’ arrival and departure safer. The City also cites access to the municipal library in Piazza Sicilia, located inside the adjacent public park. Municipio 7 gave the project a favorable opinion. It was one of 87 proposals submitted through the public notice “Piazze Aperte per ogni scuola,” which the Giunta approved in 2022.

The announcement identifies these access categories for the planned area:

The City says a subsequent ordinance will set out further access arrangements. It identifies the following categories as matters for that ordinance:
- Vehicles supporting events and essential services, with authorization from the relevant Local Police district command.
- Vehicles carrying out road, equipment, green-area or street-furniture cleaning and maintenance, for the time needed to do the work.
- Vehicles serving the library, schools, or related school and extracurricular activities.
- Vehicles going to properties within the area.
These are categories described in the approval announcement, not a complete set of operational rules. It does not provide the ordinance’s final terms.

What is planned for the public space
The City says the area is intended to support social activity, with urban furniture and potted plants. Existing trees are expected to provide shade. The announcement does not specify construction details, project cost or a delivery schedule.
When the zone will become active
No implementation date is given in the 3 October 2026 announcement. The Giunta’s approval establishes the plan and its proposed access categories; it does not establish when vehicle restrictions or other on-site changes will take effect. The City says a later ordinance will regulate additional access details.

What the City says about traffic and pedestrian space
Mobility Councillor Arianna Censi said the impact on surrounding traffic would be minimal compared with the benefits to the neighborhood and its residents. This is the councillor’s assessment; the announcement does not provide a traffic analysis to quantify it.
The same announcement, quoting Censi, reports that Milan converted 20,000 square metres into pedestrian areas in 2025 and had a total of 886,032 square metres. These are figures reported by the City; the announcement does not include the underlying dataset or explain its calculation method.
