REM Ocean, Rem Offshore’s second energy subsea construction vessel, reached Norway from Vietnam in October 2026 for systems installation and commissioning at Myklebust Verft. The 111.7-metre vessel is planned for delivery in 2027, followed by an eight-year DeepOcean charter supporting Equinor’s subsea inspection, maintenance and repair (IMR) work.
What arrived in Norway
The hull for REM Ocean was completed at Song Cam shipyard in Vietnam and handed over on 15 June 2026. A tow began near Hai Phong on 17 June, passed through Singapore and continued to Europe. After arriving in Norway in October, the unfinished vessel moved into the complex outfitting phase at Myklebust Verft.

Rem Offshore is building and owning the vessel. The design was developed with DeepOcean, Myklebust Verft, Skipsteknisk and equipment suppliers. Unlike a conventional newbuild sequence in which most systems are installed at the hull yard, this project separates hull construction from mission-system integration. Norway is where the propulsion, energy, subsea-handling and inspection systems will be installed, connected and commissioned.
Why the Norwegian completion stage matters
A subsea construction vessel is more than a completed hull. Its commercial role depends on integrating power generation, batteries, cranes, remotely operated vehicles, workshops, control systems and accommodation into one safely classed operating platform. Myklebust Verft’s work will therefore determine how the vessel’s dual-fuel engines, battery storage, regenerative systems, electric crane, work-class ROVs and autonomous inspection drone function together.

The published reports do not give a final commissioning date or sea-trial results. Delivery is currently planned for 2027, but the timing of harbor testing, system commissioning and trials has not been stated.
REM Ocean’s published design and equipment
The reported specification is configured for heavy subsea construction and long-duration IMR campaigns rather than transport alone.

Electric crane and ROV spread
The 250-ton electric crane is the vessel’s principal heavy-handling asset for subsea construction and intervention tasks. Two electric WROVs provide the work-class tooling needed for inspection, maintenance and repair on underwater infrastructure. Electric drive systems can also simplify energy management when paired with the vessel’s batteries, although no vessel-specific fuel, emissions or operating-cost reduction has been published.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces
- Complete a wide range of applications with a high-performance motor that delivers up to 300 UWO, and an impact driver delivering up to 1,400 in-lbs of torque
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
Hangar, deck and accommodation capacity
A 350-square-metre internal hangar gives the ROV and project teams protected space for deployment preparation, maintenance and tooling. The 1,000-square-metre outside deck provides room for project equipment, containers and other subsea spreads. Accommodation for 120 people is sized for a crew and specialists working on extended campaigns.
Autonomous inspection drone
The autonomous inspection drone is intended to support digital inspection of subsea assets. The reports identify the system as part of the vessel’s mission package, but do not state its operating depth, autonomy duration, sensor suite or whether it can replace WROV work. Those details should not be inferred from the vessel’s general “autonomous” description.
What “methanol-ready” means for this vessel
Current reporting describes REM Ocean’s engines as dual-fuel units capable of operating on bio-methanol and biodiesel. That establishes a designed fuel capability; it does not document that the named vessel has already bunkered methanol, completed methanol sea trials or entered service using the fuel.

A technical profile of the related REM Pioneer cautions that a methanol-ready notation can still require modifications before methanol operation. For REM Ocean, the practical questions are whether fuel-system installation, safety arrangements, class approval, crew procedures and shore-side bunkering are complete at delivery. None of those vessel-specific milestones has been published.
Bio-methanol and biodiesel are separate fuels. The dual-fuel description means the engines are designed to use either option, subject to the final installed systems and operating approvals. It does not provide a percentage reduction in emissions or fuel consumption. No such REM Ocean figure has been reported.
Planned DeepOcean and Equinor mission
After its planned 2027 delivery, REM Ocean is intended to enter an eight-year contract with DeepOcean for subsea IMR services supporting Equinor. The charter would run through 2035 if the stated term begins at delivery and proceeds as planned.

IMR work covers recurring inspection and maintenance as well as repair and intervention on subsea infrastructure. The vessel’s combination of heavy electric lifting, twin electric WROVs, autonomous inspection capability, large deck and hangar areas is aligned with that work. The contract announcement does not publish day rates, a detailed field list, utilization assumptions or a vessel-specific emissions target.

- 15 June 2026: Song Cam shipyard delivered the hull in Vietnam.
- 17 June 2026: The tow started near Hai Phong.
- June–October 2026: The hull traveled via Singapore and onward to Europe.

- Through 2035: The planned eight-year DeepOcean charter would support Equinor IMR operations.
What happens before delivery
Myklebust Verft’s completion program is expected to include installation of the major systems and mission equipment, followed by integration checks and commissioning. The work must demonstrate that propulsion, battery storage, regenerative systems, thrusters, crane controls, ROV handling, inspection systems and accommodation services operate as a coordinated vessel system.
Sea trials normally provide the evidence that propulsion, maneuvering, lifting and mission systems meet their acceptance requirements, but no REM Ocean trial results have been released. Until those results and a final handover date are published, the 2027 delivery remains a plan rather than a completed milestone.
What is confirmed—and what is not
- Confirmed in published reports: Norwegian arrival in October 2026, 111.7-metre length, dual-fuel bio-methanol/biodiesel capability, batteries, regenerative energy systems, 250-ton electric crane, two electric WROVs, autonomous inspection drone, Brunvoll thrusters, 350-square-metre hangar, 1,000-square-metre deck and accommodation for 120 people.
- Planned: Delivery in 2027 and an eight-year DeepOcean contract for Equinor IMR work.
- Not yet stated: Final commissioning date, sea-trial performance, methanol bunkering or operating history, fuel and emissions savings, detailed charter schedule and commercial rate.
Rem Offshore project leader Kristian Stavset described the delivered hull as “among the finest hulls ever delivered to the Sunnmøre region,” saying it provides a strong foundation for an efficient outfitting phase at Myklebust Verft. The next substantive milestone will be completion of that outfitting and proof that the vessel’s energy and subsea systems are ready for the contracted work.
