The right laser depends on the result you want. For direct marking or engraving of bare metal, a 1064 nm fiber or infrared laser is the most dependable beginner route. Blue diode and CO2 lasers are generally better for anodized or coated metals; bare metal usually needs a compatible marking compound to make a visible mark. Before working on a finished part, identify its material and finish, check your machine’s guidance, and test on matching scrap.
What does “engraving metal” mean?
People use “engraving” to describe several different results. Knowing which one you want helps you choose a laser and judge whether a test worked.
- Surface marking: The laser changes the surface appearance, often through oxidation or a color change, without removing much material.
- Coating removal: The laser removes paint, anodizing, or another surface layer to reveal the material beneath.
- Spray-assisted marking: A compatible marking compound is applied to the metal and fused to its surface by the laser. The visible mark comes from the processed compound, rather than deep engraving into bare metal.
- Material engraving: The laser removes metal to create a recessed mark. The result depends on the machine, settings, material, and number of passes.
A dark mark is not necessarily a deep engraving, and a coating-based mark is not the same process as removing metal. Decide whether you need contrast, depth, coating removal, or a combination before selecting equipment.
Which laser should a beginner choose?
For bare metal, a 1064 nm fiber or infrared source is the clearest starting point. CO2 and blue diode systems can mark some metal finishes, but their suitability depends on the coating and the exact machine model.

| Laser type | Where it fits | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Fiber or infrared, about 1064 nm | Direct marking of bare stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass, titanium alloys, and precious metals. Depending on the system and settings, the result may be a surface mark, annealing, coating removal, or material engraving. | Capabilities vary by machine and material. A 5 W xTool infrared source is specified for metal marking and engraving, but xTool says it does not cut metal. |
| CO2, commonly 10.6 µm | Nonmetals and some anodized or coated metals. Epilog’s material guidance lists anodized aluminum and coated metals as engravable; for bare metal it specifies a metal-marking solution. | Do not assume a CO2 laser will directly mark bare metal. OSHA warns that surfaces that do not look mirror-like can still reflect 10.6 µm radiation. |
| Blue diode | Materials such as wood, acrylic, and leather, plus some coated or anodized metals supported by the particular machine. | Bare metal generally needs a compatible marking spray or other coating for a visible result. Check the manufacturer’s material table for the exact diode model. |
For work such as marking a metal tool, panel, or part, first check whether the goal is a durable readable surface mark or a physically recessed engraving. Do not choose a machine from its advertised wattage alone: the source type, machine design, material, and finish all matter.
How do material and finish affect the result?
“Stainless steel” or “aluminum” is not a complete recipe. Alloy or grade, surface polish, anodizing, plating, paint, and other coatings can change how the laser interacts with a part. The machine’s lens condition, focus, speed, power, frequency, and number of passes also affect contrast and depth.

That is why a settings chart from another machine is only a starting reference, not a guarantee. Epilog publishes machine-specific settings and material guidance; xTool advises testing because different sprays and substrates can produce different results. Follow the manual for your machine and verify settings on scrap from the same material batch.
A repeatable beginner workflow
- Identify the part. Record the alloy or grade if known, along with thickness, coating or anodizing, polish, and any other surface treatment. Do not laser a material if you cannot verify what it is and whether it is safe to process.
- Check the manual and safety data. Use the laser manufacturer’s instructions for the exact machine, lens, and attachments. Read the safety data sheet (SDS) for any spray or coating you plan to use. Manufacturer guidance takes precedence over generic online settings.
- Clean the surface. Remove oil and fingerprints so contamination does not interfere with the mark. If using a spray, apply a thin, even coat in a ventilated area. xTool’s spray guidance says to let it dry naturally for roughly 3–5 minutes; follow the instructions for the particular product you use.
- Focus and secure the workpiece. Focus according to the machine instructions and clamp or jig the part so it cannot shift. For cylindrical items, use a rotary attachment only after confirming that it is compatible with your laser model and following its setup instructions.
- Run a test grid on matching scrap. Start with small variations in speed and power. If your machine exposes additional controls, test frequency, line interval, focus offset, or pass count in a controlled way. Where possible, change one variable at a time and record the settings.
- Inspect before running the finished part. Check contrast, edge quality, and depth against your goal. For spray workflows, remove excess compound as directed; xTool describes rinsing or wiping with water or a damp sponge and localized alcohol cleaning.
- Check the mark for its intended use. Assess adhesion, legibility, and resistance to the handling the item will receive. A mark that looks good immediately after processing may not meet the needs of a part that is frequently handled.
Keep a record of successful tests, including the machine, lens, material grade and finish, spray if used, focus, speed, power, frequency, passes, and a photo of the result. That record makes it easier to repeat a result without treating it as universal for other machines or metal finishes.

How can you make the process safer?
Laser safety depends on the source, enclosure, wavelength, material, and process. Prefer a properly enclosed system with functioning interlocks where practical. If the system is open, access must be controlled and appropriate barriers, training, ventilation, and protective equipment are essential. FDA labeling identifies a laser’s hazard class and output; higher classes carry greater potential hazard, and professional systems may be Class IIIb or IV.
- Use engineering controls. Protective housing, interlocks, and barriers reduce exposure. OSHA’s technical guidance describes housing and interlocks as engineering controls.
- Use eyewear selected for the laser. Protection must match the exact wavelength and output, including optical density and the worst-case exposure. Glasses labeled only “laser safety” may not protect against your machine. A 1064 nm source and a 10.6 µm CO2 source require different wavelength-specific consideration.
- Control fumes and particles. Use local exhaust or ventilation approved by the machine manufacturer, and follow the SDS for sprays and coatings.
- Do not process unknown or hazardous materials. Exclude PVC, vinyl, halogen-containing plastics, unknown composites, and materials whose safety information cannot be verified. Epilog specifically warns against materials that can release hydrogen chloride, vinyl chloride, or halogens, as well as chromium-containing artificial leather, epoxy, and phenolic resins.
OSHA also cautions that surfaces that appear non-mirror-like can still reflect infrared laser energy. Do not rely on appearance alone when assessing exposure risk.

Why is a test grid better than a universal settings chart?
A machine setting only means something in the context of the machine and workpiece that produced it. Two pieces with the same broad material label may differ in alloy, finish, or coating; two machines may differ in source, lens, and available controls. A single “best setting” can therefore produce weak contrast, unwanted surface changes, or a different depth on your setup.
Use manufacturer settings as a starting point, then test a small range on matching scrap. Compare the result to the actual requirement—readability, contrast, edge definition, depth, or coating removal—and record the winning combination. If the mark is inconsistent, recheck material identity and finish, focus, lens condition, and workpiece stability before changing many settings at once.
