The Mead Family Cancer Center reached a major milestone in Columbus, Nebraska, with a ribbon cutting and open house on October 22, 2026. Although the building has opened for community viewing, Columbus Community Hospital says patient services are expected to begin in November 2026. The 26,500-square-foot facility is next to the hospital and is designed to bring infusion, radiation oncology, medical oncology, PET/CT imaging and patient-navigation support together in one location.

What services will the Mead Family Cancer Center provide?
The center is planned as a comprehensive oncology facility with core services co-located under one roof:

Will Columbus have local PET/CT and radiation treatment?
Yes. The project includes a permanent PET/CT scanner and a Varian TrueBeam linear accelerator. Hospital materials say the permanent PET/CT is planned to operate five days per week, compared with the previous mobile PET/CT service, which was available once weekly.

TrueBeam is a radiation-treatment system designed to deliver precise radiation while limiting exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. The technology does not eliminate side effects or make every treatment appropriate for every patient; the treating radiation oncologist determines whether it fits a particular diagnosis and care plan.
How does the new center change access to cancer care?
The principal change is service co-location. Infusion, radiation oncology, medical oncology and PET/CT imaging are being planned as connected services at the hospital campus, which can reduce the need for patients to travel between organizations or to larger cities for routine portions of treatment.

Who donated the Mead Family Cancer Center?
The facility is named for the Mead family after a major family donation supported the project. Donor Bob Mead said his family had been touched by cancer and that he wanted people to have access to compassionate care and advanced treatments in their own community.
Columbus Community Hospital announced the project on May 1, 2025, with a planned fall 2026 opening. The completed 26,500-square-foot building fulfills that construction timeline, with patient operations now expected in November.
