It defines common capabilities for live video, audio, two-way talk, remote access, pan-tilt-zoom controls, detection zones, privacy zones, and recording. It also expands support for blinds, gates, garage doors, awnings, soil sensors, and energy-management data.
The important qualification is that Matter 1.5 is a specification—not a universal firmware update. Existing cameras do not automatically become Matter-compatible, and the same certified camera may expose different features in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant.

What Matter 1.5 changes
Matter is an application-layer smart-home standard designed to help certified devices work across compatible ecosystems. It is not itself a wireless network. Matter devices can communicate over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread; Bluetooth Low Energy is generally used during commissioning. Thread devices require a Thread Border Router, while all Matter devices need a Matter Controller for setup and control.

The Connectivity Standards Alliance announced Matter 1.5 on November 20, 2025. Its most significant change is the addition of cameras and video doorbells, one of Matter’s most visible gaps until this release.
Camera support: what it includes
Matter 1.5 provides a shared framework for camera features including:
- Live video and audio streaming.
- Two-way communication.
- Local and remote access.
- Pan, tilt, and zoom controls.
- Multiple camera streams.
- Detection zones and privacy zones.
- Event-based and continuous recording.
- Local, NAS, or cloud recording options.
- Video doorbells, chimes, and intercom-related devices.
The specification uses WebRTC-based streaming and includes standard STUN and TURN mechanisms for remote-access scenarios. In practical terms, this gives manufacturers and platforms a common language for camera access rather than requiring every ecosystem to build a completely separate integration.

Other Matter 1.5 additions
Closures and access devices
Matter 1.5 broadens support for products that open, close, raise, lower, or adjust access. The category includes window coverings, blinds, shades, awnings, gates, and garage doors.
The practical improvement is more than an open/closed command. Supported products can provide more consistent position control and state reporting across ecosystems, although the exact controls still depend on the device and platform.
Soil sensors
New soil-sensing support can provide a foundation for moisture monitoring, irrigation automations, plant-care alerts, greenhouse systems, and water-conservation routines. Do not assume every Matter soil sensor measures the same variables: soil moisture is not equivalent to a complete agricultural or environmental monitoring system.

Energy management
Matter 1.5 adds standardized energy-management information related to pricing, tariffs, grid carbon intensity, and energy-use coordination. This could support routines such as delaying appliance operation during expensive or carbon-intensive periods.
Its usefulness depends on the utility, hub, device, and ecosystem actually exposing those values. The specification creates the foundation; it does not automatically provide a utility connection or guarantee sophisticated energy automation.
What Matter 1.5 does not guarantee
- Every existing IP camera can be added to Matter.
- A Wi-Fi, RTSP, ONVIF, or HomeKit camera is automatically a Matter camera.
- Every Matter Controller can display Matter camera feeds.
- Recording, PTZ, events, or two-way talk work in every ecosystem.
- Camera footage is automatically stored locally.
- Cloud subscriptions disappear.
- Manufacturer apps become unnecessary.
- Advanced AI detection becomes standardized.
- Matter devices are private or cloud-free by default.
- One camera shares seamlessly with every household member and platform.
Existing hardware generally needs manufacturer firmware and hardware support for Matter. A conventional RTSP camera does not become Matter-compatible merely because a software update adds a new integration somewhere else.
The platform reality
Matter certification and ecosystem support are separate checks. Before buying, confirm that the exact camera model—not just its manufacturer—works with your intended platform and determine which features are actually exposed.
For example, Aqara’s Camera Hub G350 is marketed as a Matter-certified camera, but Aqara documents platform-specific limitations. Its Home Assistant support includes streaming through RTSP, while recording and advanced functions depend on the platform. Aqara also states that the G350 is limited to 1080p in Apple Home.

- Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings
This is the central lesson of Matter cameras: the Matter logo may tell you how a product can be commissioned, but it does not by itself tell you whether your preferred platform provides live view, recording, notifications, PTZ, or local storage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The first prominent example: Aqara Camera Hub G350
Aqara announced the G350 on March 17, 2026, describing it as the first Matter-certified camera. That claim should be understood as Aqara’s product claim; buyers should confirm certification details through the relevant official certification information.
Aqara’s US store listed the G350 at $139.99 when checked. It combines an indoor dual-lens camera with a smart-home hub and includes:
- A 4K panoramic lens and 2.5K telephoto lens.
- Up to 9× hybrid zoom.
- Wi-Fi 6.
- Zigbee hub, Thread, Matter Controller, and Matter bridge functions.
- Up to 512GB microSD storage, NAS upload, or optional encrypted cloud storage.
That combination may appeal to Aqara users or early Matter adopters who want a camera and several hub functions in one product. It is less compelling for someone who needs an outdoor PoE camera, a mature professional NVR, or guaranteed feature parity across platforms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHome Assistant considerations
Home Assistant announced a major Matter upgrade on June 23, 2026. Its Matter Server now uses matter.js, supports the Matter 1.5.1 specification, and includes improvements to startup, recovery, reliability, and network visualization. The update is paired with an OpenThread Border Router app supporting Thread 1.4.
This does not mean every Matter 1.5 camera feature is necessarily available in every Home Assistant installation. Home Assistant’s Matter documentation also notes that Matter Server is not supported on 32-bit platforms, Thread devices require a Thread Border Router, and some manufacturers may still require an account or proprietary hub.
General setup path
- Update Home Assistant and the Matter Server to supported current versions.
- Ensure a Matter Controller is available.
- If the camera uses Matter over Thread, confirm that a Thread Border Router is operational and within suitable network coverage.
- Put the camera into commissioning mode.
- Add it through Home Assistant’s Matter integration or the manufacturer’s documented commissioning route.
- Check which entities, streams, controls, and events appear.
- Test live view, audio, two-way talk, PTZ, notifications, and recording separately.
If a camera appears but no video is available, check its firmware, Matter Server version, platform support, RTSP or vendor-integration requirements, firewall and VLAN rules, multicast behavior, and whether the device is exposing a native Matter camera endpoint rather than only a hub or bridge function.

Matter camera versus conventional IP camera
| Option | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Matter camera | Standardized commissioning, potential cross-ecosystem control, and more consistent discovery. | Early adoption, uneven feature exposure, fewer products, and possible continued cloud or vendor-app dependence. |
| RTSP/ONVIF camera | Mature NVR and Home Assistant support, strong local-recording options, PoE availability, and broader professional hardware selection. | More manual setup and less consistent integration with consumer smart-home platforms. |
| Camera bridge | Can expose an existing camera system without replacing all hardware. | May expose only limited states or controls and is not equivalent to native Matter camera support. |
Buying checklist
- Verify certification: Check the exact model and claimed Matter device type.
- Check the platform: Confirm support in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant, or your chosen ecosystem.
- Check each feature: Verify live video, audio, two-way talk, PTZ, events, notifications, and recording separately.
- Understand storage: Determine whether recording is local, NAS-based, cloud-based, subscription-dependent, or unavailable.
- Check the network: Provide strong Wi-Fi for high-bandwidth video and a working Thread Border Router where required.
- Review privacy: Look for physical shutters, local processing, account requirements, two-factor authentication, and the manufacturer’s update policy.
- Read platform notes: Vendor compatibility pages often reveal limitations hidden by a general Matter claim.
Common failure modes
- No live video: The platform may not yet implement the Matter camera device type or may support only part of it.
- The product appears only as a hub: A multi-function product may expose its bridge or controller role without exposing the camera endpoint.
- Streaming works but recording does not: Recording is often platform- or subscription-dependent.
- PTZ works only in the vendor app: Advanced controls may not be exposed through Matter.
- Reduced Apple Home resolution: Aqara documents a 1080p limit for the G350 in Apple Home.
- Home Assistant needs RTSP: Aqara documents RTSP streaming for its Home Assistant integration.
- Thread commissioning fails: Check the Thread Border Router, network isolation, and controller connectivity.
- Remote access fails: NAT, firewall rules, STUN/TURN behavior, and platform relay services can affect streaming.
- Privacy expectations are too high: Matter does not guarantee local-only video, no accounts, no cloud, or universal end-to-end encryption.
