Winding a toroidal coil by hand means repeatedly passing a spool or a large loop of wire through the core’s center. This Arduino-controlled homebrew machine makes that motion manageable by combining an openable winding ring with rotating core rollers. It is a clever, specialized workshop tool—not a proven production machine—and its demonstration reportedly used a plywood substitute rather than a ferrite toroid.
Why toroids are awkward to wind
Every turn on a toroid must pass through the central opening. As the turn count rises, the wire loop becomes increasingly cumbersome, while keeping the turns evenly distributed around the core requires constant attention. Guessing the required wire length can also leave the builder with either waste or an incomplete winding.

The machine changes the process: instead of repeatedly pushing a loose wire bundle through the hole, a small spool travels around the toroid on a split ring.

How the machine works
The system coordinates two different motions:
- Winding ring: A wooden hoop carries the wire spool around the toroid. A slit and locking mechanism allow the ring to open, fit around the core, and close again.
- Core rollers: Three rollers, positioned roughly 120 degrees apart, support and rotate the toroidal core on its own axis.
- Relative speed: The ring advances the wire through the core; rotation of the core changes where the next turn lands around its circumference. Adjusting the relationship between those speeds controls how concentrated or spread out the winding becomes.
A useful simplified model is:
Winding ring: carries wire around the core
Core rollers: rotate the core beneath the wire
Result: coordinated motion distributes successive turns
The design is intended to produce an even distribution, but the available documentation does not establish a measured spacing tolerance or closed-loop wire-position feedback. It should not be described as a precision winding system without calibration data. Hackster’s explanation of the mechanism describes the same hoop-and-core relationship.

The original build
The reported machine uses a 12-mm plywood winding ring measuring approximately 145 mm outside diameter and 122 mm inside diameter. The ring includes a spool groove about 43 mm long and 5 mm deep, plus an 8-mm-wide, 4-mm-deep groove for the belt. A 6-mm timing belt drives the ring.
Other reported construction details include:
- Three guide rollers using 626Z bearings
- A NEMA 17 stepper motor for core rotation
- A 12-volt DC motor for the winding ring
- A 20×20 aluminum-extrusion frame
- A nylon spool to keep the rotating assembly light
- Foam tape or similar friction material on the core rollers
- A hinged or releasing arm and wing nuts for installation and adjustment
The dimensions are specific to this build. They do not define a universal toroid size range. A replacement ring must provide clearance for the core, spool, belt groove, and opening mechanism while still fitting the roller arrangement. The original construction details are documented by Electric DIY Lab.
Electronics and controls
The control system is built around an Arduino Nano. The reported parts list includes an A4988 stepper driver, NEMA 17 stepper motor, DC motor, L293D motor-driver IC, IR sensor, rotary encoder, and 16×2 I2C LCD.
- Arduino Nano: Coordinates the motors, user interface, and counting logic.
- A4988: Drives the NEMA 17 stepper motor that turns the core.
- DC motor and belt: Rotate the winding ring.
- IR sensor: Detects a feature on the ring for turn-counting feedback.
- Encoder and LCD: Provide a way to enter and monitor winding settings.
The builder reports entering the toroid diameter, desired number of turns, and winding area or angle. The exact menu labels, firmware constants, motor-current settings, wiring interpretation, and recovery behavior should be checked against the project’s original code and circuit documentation rather than guessed.

- Suitable for small motor coils, small transformers and fishing lines in the telecommunications and electrical industries. If used on tassels, webbing, elastic threads, the load-bearing capacity should not exceed 300g.
- Equipped with a five-digit counter that records up to 99,999 turns. The transmission ratio between the spindle and the counter is 1:8.
- Pull the reset handle on the left by hand, the counter can be reset to 00000.
- The maximum diameter of coils fit to be wound: 150mm (5.91 inches)
- The maximum length of coils fit to be wound: 100mm (3.94 inches)
The L293D is part of the original design, but it is not automatically an ideal modern motor controller. Builders still need to account for motor current, heat dissipation, supply voltage, flyback protection, and the electrical limits of the particular board.
A sensible operating sequence
- Prepare the toroid, magnet wire, spool, and a secure wire path.
- Open the winding ring and place it around the core.
- Close and lock the ring, then seat it in the guide rollers.
- Adjust the core rollers for firm grip without crushing or stressing the core.
- Mount the spool and thread the wire through the intended route.
- Enter the core dimensions, turn count, and winding area through the encoder and LCD.
- Start slowly and confirm that the ring, core, belt, sensor, and wire all track correctly.
- Stop immediately if the wire snags, the core slips, the turn count behaves unexpectedly, or the ring begins to open.
- Inspect the finished winding and independently verify the turn count.
This sequence is a practical build-and-use recommendation, not a transcription of every firmware step. The available source material does not verify exact menu names or acceleration settings.
What the demonstration proves—and what it does not
The project demonstrates a convincing mechanical principle: a split ring can carry a spool around a rotating toroid while a microcontroller coordinates the motions. However, Hackaday reported that the demonstration used a plywood ring substitute rather than a ferrite core, because a suitable ferrite core was not available for testing.
That limitation matters. The demonstration supports the concept and the motion system, but it does not establish:

Core fit and roller grip
Check the core’s outside diameter, inside diameter, thickness, and clearance around the spool before cutting the ring. A poorly adjusted roller can slip and create incorrect turns, wire pileup, and sudden tension changes. Excessive pressure can chip or crack ferrite. Foam or another compliant friction surface can improve grip, but it does not replace careful adjustment.
Wire tension
The project descriptions do not establish a dedicated tensioner. Motor synchronization alone cannot guarantee uniform tension. Fine wire may become loose, cross over itself, or suffer enamel damage if the spool unwinds unevenly. A builder adapting the design should consider a controlled friction spool or separate tensioning stage.

An IR sensor may count ring features or revolutions, but a ring revolution is not automatically proof of one correctly placed wire turn. Missed pulses, belt slip, startup motion, stopping inertia, and core slip can all produce discrepancies. Visually check the result and, for important windings, verify the count independently.

Speed mismatch
The DC motor and stepper must remain coordinated as the wire spool diameter changes and as the machine accelerates or stops. The original source mentions a 300 RPM motor and suggests 600–1,000 RPM as a possible design direction; these figures should be treated as the builder’s recommendation, not validated operating requirements.
When this design makes sense
It is attractive for a hobbyist who winds many custom toroids, needs repeatable nominal turn counts, and already has access to woodworking, machining, drilling, or fabrication tools. It also makes a strong Arduino and workshop-tool project because the mechanical problem is clearly defined and the frame can be adapted.
Hand winding is probably better for one or two coils, unusual tap arrangements, very thick or fragile wire, irregular cores, or jobs where the operator needs direct tactile control of tension. A conventional coil winder is more suitable for bobbins, solenoids, cylindrical coils, long multilayer windings, or production work requiring documented repeatability.

Safety and electrical qualification
A neatly wound toroid is not automatically a safe transformer or high-voltage component. Mains and high-voltage applications require the correct wire insulation, interlayer insulation, creepage and clearance, thermal design, impregnation where appropriate, and electrical tests such as insulation or hi-pot testing. The machine addresses mechanical winding only; it does not certify the finished component.
Verdict
This homebrew toroid winder solves a genuinely awkward workshop task with an elegant combination of an openable spool ring, rotating core rollers, a sensor, and Arduino control. It is a worthwhile design to adapt when toroids are a recurring part of the work. But the reported evidence supports a clever maker prototype—not a universal toroid winder, a precision instrument, or a production-ready machine. Builders should expect to resize the mechanics, tune the motors, manage wire tension, calibrate the sensor, and validate the finished winding themselves.
