The Castle Beach parking lot at Oʻahu’s Mālaekahana State Recreation Area closed on October 26, 2026, for a state-contracted improvement project. The Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) says the lot will stay closed throughout construction and estimates completion in the first half of 2027. The work will enlarge and upgrade the parking area to 56 spaces, including three ADA-compliant stalls.

Why is the Castle Beach parking lot closed?

DLNR closed the Castle Beach parking lot so contractors can rebuild and expand the facility. The project is being delivered under a $150,000 contract awarded to Ke Nui Construction, according to the DLNR Division of State Parks announcement dated October 26, 2026.

DLNR’s release says, “The improvement work starts today and is estimated to be completed in the first half of 2027.” Because the agency describes the closure as lasting throughout construction, visitors should not expect to use the lot while the work is underway.

When will Castle Beach parking lot reopen?

DLNR has not provided a specific reopening day. Its current estimate is the first half of 2027, meaning the lot could reopen at any point from January through June if construction and final inspections remain on schedule. The estimate is not a guarantee, and the agency may update it if the project timeline changes.

The closure is expected to last several months, from the October 26, 2026 start date until the project is completed in the first half of 2027. The announcement does not give a phased-opening schedule or identify dates when portions of the parking footprint might become available.

What will the upgraded Castle Beach lot include?

The completed footprint is planned to provide 56 parking spaces, with three spaces designed to meet ADA-compliant requirements. That is an increase in capacity as well as an accessibility improvement, although DLNR’s announcement does not specify the former number of spaces, stall dimensions, surfacing materials or other design details.

Where can visitors park during construction?

The DLNR announcement reviewed for this closure does not state that alternate parking, a shuttle, or replacement beach-access arrangements will be provided. Visitors should not assume that nearby shoulders, private lots or other state-park areas are authorized substitutes. Check current signs and State Parks updates before traveling, and follow posted restrictions rather than entering the closed work area.

Conditions at nearby access points can change independently of this project. A location that appears open may have different operating rules, limited capacity or no legal connection to Castle Beach. The closure notice therefore supports planning for a potentially unavailable parking destination, not a guaranteed alternative.

What should visitors check before going to Castle Beach?

  1. Confirm the latest status. Look for a current DLNR or State Parks notice before leaving, particularly if your trip is planned near the first-half-of-2027 completion window.
  2. Plan for no on-site parking. Treat the Castle Beach lot as unavailable during construction unless DLNR announces an earlier reopening.
  3. Obey signs and barriers. Do not drive into the closed footprint or park in construction access areas.
  4. Verify accessibility arrangements. The future design includes three ADA-compliant stalls, but the closure notice does not describe temporary accessible parking or an accessible route during construction.
  5. Ask State Parks about changes. For project or access questions, DLNR identifies communications specialist Ryan Aguilar and the State Parks communications office at 808-587-0396.

What is known—and not yet known—about the project?

Known details are the location, October 26 start date, closure during construction, first-half-of-2027 estimate, 56-space design, three ADA-compliant stalls and $150,000 contract with Ke Nui Construction. The public announcement does not establish a precise reopening date, temporary parking plan, shuttle service, construction phases, traffic controls or the final materials and layout.

Those omissions matter for trip planning: the project’s capacity and accessibility goals describe the finished facility, not conditions available during the closure. Visitors who need a specific access accommodation should contact State Parks before traveling rather than rely on the future design as a temporary arrangement.
