Making your own chain sprockets starts with identifying the chain—not choosing a tooth count. The correct tooth-gap profile and clearances depend on the chain family and its applicable standard. Once those are established, you can decide whether to machine or fabricate a part, specify one for a supplier, or buy a standard sprocket.
Start with the chain and its governing standard
A sprocket is not defined by tooth count alone. The chain’s pitch, roller diameter, inner width and other dimensions determine the tooth-gap form and clearances. Use the full chain designation and applicable standard; do not assume that a profile intended for one chain family will fit another.
The relevant standards have different scopes. ASME lists B29.15M for steel roller-type conveyor chains and sprocket teeth, including chain dimensions and clearances, runout tolerances and sprocket factors. ISO 10190:2008 covers motorcycle roller and bush chains and associated sprockets in its stated pitch range of 6.35 mm to 19.05 mm. ISO 606:2004 concerns short-pitch transmission precision roller and bush chains and associated sprockets, and distinguishes cycle and motorcycle chain coverage. These are not interchangeable references. Confirm the current edition and applicability, and obtain the full standard before relying on dimensions.
Use the actual chain and the chain manufacturer’s data to confirm the designation and dimensions. A worn sprocket is a poor first source for geometry when the chain specification is available: wear can obscure the intended tooth form.

Set the design inputs before making a drawing
First record how the drive will be used. The driven load, speed, environment, shaft and center-distance constraints, direction changes and maintenance expectations are engineering inputs—not a complete sizing calculation. The correct tooth count and material depend on the application and chain, so no single homemade design can be assumed suitable for every drive.
Then complete the drawing and specify the part clearly. Include:

- Full chain designation and applicable standard
- Tooth count and number of chain strands
- Face width
- Bore, hub and keyway dimensions
- Material, heat treatment and surface treatment
- Required tolerances and quantity
Choose the tooth count and ratio for the drive, then obtain the corresponding tooth-gap geometry and dimensional requirements from the governing standard or chain manufacturer. A complete profile table or verified universal CAD formula is not established here; do not substitute a guessed drawing for the applicable data.
Choose a route that can hold the geometry
Depending on the part size, available equipment and duty, possible routes include machining a sprocket, cutting a plate, or fabricating a ring-and-center assembly. None is automatically the best method for every application. The route must preserve the tooth form, concentricity, face runout and mounting features required by the design.

If the design includes welding
Plan for weld distortion before cutting parts. Tsubakimoto Chain Co.’s technical guidance warns against welding a hub to an A-type sprocket because distortion can cause tooth-face runout and make quality difficult to maintain. For a ring-and-center design, define weld details and material compatibility, and determine whether stress relief and final machining are needed. Do not assume welding leaves the tooth geometry or mounting surfaces unchanged.
When making it yourself is not the right choice
For a safety-critical or high-value drive, have a qualified engineer or supplier check the design against the applicable standard, chain ratings, material data and actual operating loads. Buying a standard sprocket may be simpler if its chain designation, tooth count and mounting dimensions match. If a standard part cannot meet the geometry, a custom supplier can discuss a drawing or sample; provide the full chain designation and mounting details.

Inspect the finished sprocket against the specification
Before fitting the part, inspect it against the actual standard and supplier data. Check the tooth profile and fit with the specified chain, concentricity, face runout, bore and keyway fit, burrs, and visible defects. This is a practical validation checklist, not a set of acceptance tolerances: use the applicable standard and manufacturer data for limits.
For a purchased part, confirm the chain designation, tooth count, bore, strand count, width and hub before ordering. A product described only as a roller-chain sprocket may still be the wrong part for the chain or mounting arrangement.
