Mailbox Woodworking Plans: Box, Post, or Decorative Cover?

Choose the right plan first: a mailbox box, its post, and a decorative cover are distinct projects with different dimensions, materials, and tools.

There is no single cut list for a “mailbox woodworking plan”: building the mailbox box, its supporting post, or a decorative shell around an existing mailbox are different projects. Choose the one you need first, then follow that plan’s materials and dimensions without combining parts from unrelated designs. For curbside installation, confirm placement and height with your local post office before building or setting the post.

Choose the mailbox project you want to build

Start by deciding what the plan needs to produce. A mailbox box includes the enclosure and often a door; a post supports a separate mailbox; a decorative cover surrounds an existing mailbox. Their dimensions, joinery, materials, and tool requirements are not interchangeable.

  • Build a mailbox box: Choose a plan such as Kreg’s compact mailbox tutorial or WOOD Store’s mailbox project. Use that project’s own cut list.
  • Build a post: Choose a post plan that suits your available lumber and tools. Some are straightforward workshop projects; timber-frame designs use large timbers and traditional joinery.
  • Cover an existing mailbox: Dremel’s makeover builds a plywood shell sized around an existing mailbox and clad in cedar shingles. It does not replace the mailbox or its support.

Compare plans by what they actually build

Plan Project and dimensions Materials and tools Important distinction
Kreg Tool compact mailbox Mailbox box; follow the tutorial’s cut list for its dimensions. 1×8, 1×6, and 1×4 lumber; rare-earth magnets, plumber’s chain, eye hooks, mailbox numbers, and Titebond Outdoor Glue. Its listed hardware and cuts belong to this mailbox design; they are not a general materials list for every mailbox.
WOOD Store mailbox Mailbox box; the project page describes it for outdoor or indoor use. Recommends weather-resistant white oak, mahogany, cedar, or redwood. Updated January 8, 2024; identified as WOOD Issue 248, September 2017. The page does not establish comparative durability or cost for the listed woods.
WOOD Store timber-framed post Mailbox support; uses a 4×6 beam and 6×6 post. Pressure-treated lumber; the project teaches timber-framing techniques. It builds a post, not the mailbox box. Updated January 9, 2024; identified as WOOD Issue 218, May 2013.
WoodworkersWorkshop timber-frame post Finished dimensions: 72 inches high, 5.5 inches wide, and 33.5 inches long. Full materials list and full-size pattern; drill, chisels, mallet, clamps, and common workshop tools. Paper and PDF versions are listed. The listed dimensions are for this post design, not a curbside placement specification.
Shelter Institute large timber-frame post Cut sheet specifies a 74-inch above-ground post, 56-inch beam, and 46-inch depth. Eastern White Pine, pressure-treated base timbers, hardwood wedge stock, and 3/4-inch pegs; through mortises and wedged tenons. PDF and mailed plans are described. The page showed the plan as unavailable or sold out when checked; confirm current inventory.
Dremel decorative makeover Decorative shell fitted around an existing mailbox; no standard finished dimensions are specified. Plywood shell clad with cedar shingles; the project lists a Dremel UltraSaw and cutting wheel among its tools. Measure the existing mailbox so its door remains operable. This is a cover, not a new mailbox or post.

Match materials, tools, and skill to the plan

For a mailbox box

Kreg’s tutorial lists three lumber sizes—1×8, 1×6, and 1×4—along with magnets, chain, eye hooks, mailbox numbers, and outdoor glue. Get the exact board lengths and cuts from its instructions rather than inferring them from the stock sizes. WOOD Store recommends weather-resistant white oak, mahogany, cedar, or redwood for its separate mailbox project. The cited pages do not provide controlled comparisons of how long these choices last in particular climates.

For a post

Check whether the plan calls for ordinary dimensional lumber or large timbers before you commit. The WOOD Store timber-framed design specifies pressure-treated 4×6 beams and a 6×6 post. The Shelter Institute cut sheet uses a larger timber-frame approach with through mortises, wedged tenons, and specified peg stock. These designs involve different material sourcing and joinery; do not substitute their measurements or shopping lists for one another.

For a decorative shell

Dremel’s makeover is built to fit an existing mailbox, so measure that specific mailbox and allow for the door to open freely before cutting the plywood. Follow the manuals for all tools, wear eye and respiratory protection, and clamp the workpiece when practical, as Dremel advises. Cutting and cladding a shell does not establish that the existing mailbox or its post meets local placement requirements.

Confirm curbside placement before installing

The USPS installation standard tells customers to contact the local post office before installing a mailbox. Its general guidance is 41–45 inches from the road surface to the mailbox floor or mail-entry point, and a 6–8 inch setback from the front face of the curb or road edge to the mailbox door. These are general installation dimensions, not a substitute for confirmation at a particular address.

  • Identify whether the plan builds a box, a support post, or a shell around an existing mailbox.
  • Check the plan’s finished dimensions, complete cut list, hardware, and any required pattern.
  • Confirm that the specified lumber is available and appropriate for the intended outdoor exposure.
  • Compare the joinery and tool requirements with your experience and equipment.
  • For curbside work, contact the local post office about placement before installation.
  • For a shell, verify that the finished cover leaves the mailbox door clear and usable.
