M.O.O.D. Space (Multisensory Oasis On-Demand) is a Perkins Eastman concept for a prefabricated, relocatable room supporting remote counseling, meditation and other personalized activities. Its proposed 360-degree augmented-reality setting could adjust light, color, sound, vibration, aroma, temperature and other sensory inputs. The concept was a finalist in Healthcare Design’s 2022 Breaking Through competition, not a documented operating clinic or validated treatment system. The distinction matters to anyone assessing it as a construction or healthcare project.

What is M.O.O.D. Space?

M.O.O.D. stands for Multisensory Oasis On-Demand. Perkins Eastman designers Shayne Piltz and Bhavishya Venkitaraman developed the proposal as a flexible mental-health environment that could be assembled from modular panels and moved between underused sites. The design was presented as a way to bring a private, technology-enabled room to communities without waiting for a conventional clinic to be built.

Building Design + Construction described the proposal on January 27, 2023, following Perkins Eastman’s November 10, 2022 account, “Mental Healthcare, Anywhere.” Healthcare Design later identified M.O.O.D. Space as one of four finalists selected from 31 entries in its 2022 Breaking Through conceptual design competition. It did not receive the competition’s top prize.

Those facts establish the project’s nature: an architectural and service-design proposition. The cited coverage does not document a completed installation, an operating booking network, a named hardware platform, clinical trials or treatment-outcome data. References to artificial intelligence, physiological sensing, augmented reality and ultraviolet sanitation describe intended features rather than verified performance.

How the proposed room would work

A modular shell that can move to demand

The room is conceived as a kit of panels rather than a permanently fixed interior. A unit could theoretically be assembled in an empty storefront, vacant office, underused parking area or another available location, then relocated when local demand changes. That approach addresses a practical problem in behavioral-health access: a community may have an unused space but lack the time, budget or site certainty for a full building project.

Modularity also changes the construction questions. Designers would need repeatable panel connections, a transport strategy, accessible entry and egress, safe assembly and disassembly procedures, and building-services interfaces that can be disconnected without damaging the host property. The proposal does not publish panel dimensions, structural loads, fire ratings, acoustic ratings or installation times, so those would have to be engineered in any future development.

A 360-degree augmented-reality environment

Inside, the proposal describes an immersive environment surrounding the occupant. The sensory variables named in the coverage are:

  • Light and color
  • Sound and frequency
  • Touch and vibration
  • Aroma
  • Temperature

In practical terms, the room would not be a single-purpose consultation box. Its settings could be changed for a guided meditation, a remote therapy session or another activity requiring a controlled atmosphere. “Augmented reality” here refers to the proposed environmental layer around the user; the articles do not identify a particular headset, display system or software vendor.

Physiological inputs and proposed AI

The concept says artificial intelligence could evaluate inputs such as voice, heart rate, blood pressure and brainwaves, then recommend an individualized treatment course and room settings. That is an ambitious data architecture: sensors would have to capture signals reliably, software would have to interpret them, and a clinician or other qualified professional would have to decide how recommendations fit a person’s care.

No cited source says that this sensing pipeline has been tested, that an algorithm has been clinically validated or that it can diagnose a condition. A future project would need explicit consent, data minimization, cybersecurity, retention rules, human oversight and a way to operate safely when sensors fail or produce ambiguous readings.

Three proposed ways to use the space

The published user flow includes three broad options:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Meditation: an occupant enters a selected sensory environment for an individual session.
  2. On-call support: the occupant connects with a specialist when immediate conversation is desired.
  3. Scheduled therapy: the room hosts a remote appointment arranged in advance.

A mobile interface is also described for booking a room and locating one nearby. The sources do not show a live application, operating hours, staffing model or geographic service area, so these remain elements of the proposal rather than services readers can book.

Cleaning and optional data collection

The design includes ultraviolet light intended to sanitize the room between occupants. UV systems require carefully controlled exposure because people cannot safely be present during many disinfection cycles; a built project would need interlocks, verification and a cleaning protocol coordinated with local infection-control requirements. The articles provide no dose, cycle time, pathogen test or certification.

The proposal also describes anonymous and optional data collection. “Optional” would need to be meaningful in practice: a person should be able to decline physiological monitoring without losing access to basic counseling, and the room should make clear what is collected, why it is collected and when it is deleted. Anonymity cannot be assumed merely because names are omitted; location, appointment and biometric data can be identifying when combined.

Construction ideas behind the concept

Reusing overlooked sites

Repurposing vacant retail, office and parking locations could reduce the time required to find a conventional healthcare site. It could also place support closer to transit, workplaces or neighborhoods that do not have a dedicated behavioral-health facility. The trade-off is that a host space may not already satisfy healthcare requirements for accessibility, fire protection, ventilation, privacy, acoustics, electrical capacity or emergency response.

A relocatable unit would therefore need a site-assessment package covering the host building and the room itself. That package might include structural verification, utility connections, ventilation and filtration, accessible routes, sound isolation, emergency lighting, security, communications and landlord approvals. M.O.O.D. Space’s published concept does not provide those specifications.

Photothermochromic glass and the net-zero ambition

The proposal includes photothermochromic glass panels intended to respond to climate conditions and support a net-zero-energy goal. Such glass could be part of a responsive envelope that manages solar exposure while preserving a distinctive interior experience. The concept materials do not report energy models, measured thermal performance, embodied-carbon calculations, operating data or a completed façade.

For a real project, the net-zero claim would have to be defined. Teams would need to state whether it applies to operational energy, whole-life carbon or another boundary; document the local climate assumptions; and account for heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting, sensory equipment, communications and transport between sites. Without those details, the energy objective is best read as a design direction, not a performance result.

Privacy as a building-system requirement

Remote therapy depends on conversations that cannot be overheard. A deployable room in a storefront or parking area would need acoustic separation from neighbors, secure doors, controlled sightlines and a dependable communications connection. The sensory system should also fail quietly: a lighting or audio fault must not expose a session, interrupt an emergency call or leave an occupant unable to exit.

Construction decisions affect privacy long before software is installed. Panel joints, doors, glazing, mechanical penetrations and ventilation paths can all transmit sound. A future specification should set measurable acoustic targets, define who can enter for maintenance, and separate service access from a person’s appointment whenever possible.

What visitors experienced at the 2022 presentation

At the October 2022 HCD Expo presentation, attendees were offered virtual-reality glasses to experience the idea. The coverage does not identify the headset model, and the glasses were a presentation aid rather than evidence of an installed M.O.O.D. Space system. They should not be treated as a consumer-equipment recommendation or as proof that the room’s proposed sensing and treatment functions were operating.

The presentation format is useful for understanding the design intent: an immersive demonstration can show how a room might change around an occupant more effectively than a static floor plan. It cannot, by itself, establish comfort, accessibility, therapeutic benefit, infection-control performance or reliability in daily use.

People behind the proposal

Shayne Piltz and Bhavishya Venkitaraman were identified as the chief designers. The listed mentors were principals Federico Del Priore and Maureen Carley, with Senior Associate Melissa Nosal. Other credited contributors were sustainability consultant Juan Guarin, 3D visualization lead Mike Kane, video narrator Mwanzaa Brown and VR producer Tishawn Fahie.

Piltz described the value of a scalable approach this way: “That adaptability reinforces our vision to create a simple solution that can be deployed at a large scale so it’s accessible to every community.” Venkitaraman broadened the intended use beyond therapy: “We can now think of how this space that is specifically designed for mental healthcare can also be used for so many more activities that require a personalized space.” Both statements explain the design ambition; neither is a report of deployment or measured outcomes.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

Question What the cited coverage establishes
What is it? A Perkins Eastman conceptual design called Multisensory Oasis On-Demand.
Who developed it? Designers Shayne Piltz and Bhavishya Venkitaraman, with the credited team and mentors listed above.
How was it recognized? One of four finalists from 31 entries in Healthcare Design’s 2022 Breaking Through competition.
What functions are proposed? Modular deployment, tailored sensory conditions, remote counseling, meditation, on-call specialist access, scheduled therapy, mobile booking and room-finding.
What technology is described? Augmented-reality environmental control, proposed physiological inputs, AI recommendations, UV sanitation and photothermochromic glass.
What has been demonstrated clinically? The sources provide no clinical efficacy statistics, health-outcome data or named treatment study for M.O.O.D. Space.
Can a reader book one? The available accounts do not document a live booking service, operating location or installed facility.

This distinction protects readers from a common design-story mistake: treating a compelling visualization as a proven healthcare intervention. M.O.O.D. Space may be valuable as a prompt for discussion about access, privacy and adaptable construction, but the cited material cannot support claims that it improves therapy or is currently available.

A practical checklist for developing a room like this

If a healthcare provider or developer wanted to move from concept to project, the following questions would need answers before procurement:

  • Clinical governance: Which licensed professionals supervise sessions, and which uses are appropriate for remote care, meditation or urgent support?
  • Accessibility: Can people with mobility, hearing, vision, cognitive or sensory disabilities enter, understand and control the environment independently?
  • Acoustics and privacy: What speech-privacy target applies, and how are doors, panels, glazing and ventilation tested?
  • Controls: What is the manual fallback when sensors, networks or automated recommendations fail?
  • Consent and records: Which physiological signals are optional, where are they processed, how long are they retained and who can see them?
  • Infection control: What UV safety interlocks, cleaning steps and verification records are required between occupants?
  • Building approvals: Does each host site satisfy planning, fire, electrical, mechanical, accessibility and healthcare regulations?
  • Energy and carbon: What boundary defines “net zero,” and what measured performance supports the claim?
  • Relocation: What components can be reused, what specialist contractors are required, and how is each reinstallation recommissioned?

These are implementation requirements, not specifications published for M.O.O.D. Space. They show why a visually simple room can involve substantial coordination among architects, contractors, clinicians, information-security teams and regulators.

How to judge the concept against other healthcare-room proposals

When comparing M.O.O.D. Space with a built behavioral-health room or another immersive-care concept, use evidence categories rather than visual appeal:

  1. Operational reality: Is there a documented installation with an address, operator and maintenance record?
  2. Population and setting: Is it designed for outpatient therapy, crisis support, rehabilitation, meditation or another defined use?
  3. Clinical oversight: Are qualified clinicians involved, and are outcomes reported with a clear method?
  4. Privacy and consent: Can users decline sensing, and are data practices explained in plain language?
  5. Accessibility and sensory control: Can settings be adapted safely for different bodies, abilities and sensitivities?
  6. Infection prevention: Are cleaning and disinfection methods tested, documented and safe around occupants?
  7. Construction and energy: Are durability, relocation, operating energy and whole-life impacts measured?
  8. Cost and deployment: Is there a disclosed capital, staffing and maintenance model?

On the available record, M.O.O.D. Space can be assessed as a thoughtful finalist concept, but not ranked as a higher-performing treatment environment because comparable measurements are not published.

Current status and what readers should take away

The latest cited accounts are from November 2022 and January 2023. They establish the competition concept and its proposed features but do not settle whether the design later became a built or operating installation. Anyone seeking to visit, book or procure a unit would need current confirmation from Perkins Eastman or a documented project source.

For construction professionals, the lasting lesson is the integration of architecture, digital services and behavioral-health practice. A relocatable room can appear straightforward while raising demanding questions about code compliance, acoustics, data protection, clinical responsibility, infection control and energy performance. M.O.O.D. Space makes those questions visible; it does not answer them with verified project data.
