Lunar Energy announced $232 million in financing on February 4, 2026, to scale its residential battery systems and expand Gridshare, its software platform for coordinating home batteries as virtual power plants. The funding is a bet on an integrated hardware-and-software business—not simply on selling more wall-mounted batteries. Lunar says it will use the money to expand production, enter additional markets and enroll more homes in grid-support programs.
The company’s system stores energy for a home, then software can adjust charging, discharging and other flexible loads during periods of grid stress. The potential benefit is substantial, but customer earnings, availability and grid services depend on local utilities, interconnection approval and program rules.

The company also sells Gridshare, an enterprise platform for aggregating distributed energy resources.
The system can be configured for:
- New solar-plus-storage installations;
- Adding storage to an existing solar array;
- Battery backup without installing new solar panels; and
- Future or existing integration with EV chargers and other controllable household loads.
Lunar’s product information is available on its system page and design page.
How a home battery becomes a virtual power plant
A virtual power plant, or VPP, is a software-managed network of small energy devices located at customer premises. Batteries, solar systems, EV chargers, thermostats and flexible appliances can be coordinated so that, collectively, they behave like a dispatchable grid resource.
A conventional power plant generates electricity at one location. A VPP uses many smaller assets distributed across homes and businesses. The devices remain under customer ownership or control, while the aggregator coordinates their response to utility or market signals.
- The battery charges from rooftop solar or the grid.
- Software forecasts household demand, solar production, electricity prices and likely grid events.
- The system preserves an outage reserve according to the customer’s settings and operating mode.
- During an event, it may discharge, delay charging or alter the timing of household consumption.
- The aggregated fleet can reduce demand or export energy when the grid is under pressure.
- Customers may receive compensation based on capacity, energy delivered or measured performance.
This does not mean every Lunar battery is continuously exporting power. Participation is generally optional, event schedules differ and programs may impose reserve or operating requirements. Lunar describes Gridshare as the enterprise software layer that aggregates and manages these resources; its explanation is available in the company’s founder Q&A.

What homeowners may earn
Not guaranteed: Lunar says customers participating in its VPP programs earned an average of $464 in 2025. Its published examples include individual customers who earned $423, $473 and $482 that year. Lunar also says California customers received an average of $338 in additional Lunar AI value, producing a combined reported average of $802 beyond standard battery operation.
For California’s 2026 Demand Side Grid Support program, Lunar gives an example of approximately $260 for a 20 kWh system, assuming full contract-period participation. The program allows up to 60 dispatch hours, generally between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., from May through October.
These are Lunar’s figures, not guaranteed returns or independently verified performance results. Actual compensation can depend on the utility territory, enrollment status, nominated capacity, event performance, electricity rates, reserve settings and whether the customer is already receiving another incentive. A VPP payment should not be treated as a guaranteed annual yield or automatically added to a payback calculation.

Availability and installation
As of August 16, 2026, Lunar says the Lunar System is available throughout California through certified installers. It can be installed in homes without solar or added to existing solar, subject to site conditions, utility rules and installer coverage. The company’s availability page should be checked before requesting a proposal.
In April 2026, Lunar announced a Texas partnership with Octopus Energy. The offering combines a fixed-rate electricity plan, Lunar hardware and energy-management software. The partnership does not make the system generally available nationwide, and the offer may not apply to every Texas customer.
A typical project involves a site assessment, system design, an installer proposal, permitting, utility interconnection and permission to operate. Customers need PTO before the system can export electricity or participate in applicable VPP programs. Lunar’s PTO guidance also notes that California customers without existing solar may move to a NEM 3 or net-billing rate structure, while some existing-solar customers may remain on NEM 2 depending on their circumstances.

Lunar does not appear to publish a standard retail price on the reviewed product pages. Buyers receive an installer proposal, and the economics depend on equipment, labor, permitting, financing, incentives, utility rates, battery degradation, outage value and uncertain VPP payments.
A buyer should ask for separate figures for:
- Equipment and installation cost;
- Solar, storage and electrical-panel work;
- Available tax credits or local incentives;
- Expected bill savings under the actual utility rate;
- Expected VPP compensation and its assumptions;
- Minimum reserve required during events; and
- Warranty coverage, software requirements and service responsibilities.
Do not combine bill savings, VPP payments, tax incentives and the value of backup power into one payback figure without showing the assumptions behind each component.

How Lunar compares with alternatives
Tesla Powerwall
Tesla Powerwall is the most obvious branded comparison: a residential battery with backup capability and an established VPP ecosystem in some markets. Tesla pricing and eligibility vary by location, installation and utility program. Lunar’s distinction is its emphasis on an integrated bridge, smart breakers and Gridshare software rather than only the battery itself.
Enphase IQ Battery
Enphase IQ Battery is a modular option that fits particularly naturally with Enphase solar microinverters. Enphase says the IQ Battery 5P starts at 5 kWh, delivers up to 3.84 kW of continuous power and carries a 15-year limited U.S. warranty. Buyers comparing it with Lunar should examine total system output, coupling architecture, backup-panel design and installer expertise—not just storage capacity.
Utility-run VPPs and bundled plans
Some customers may be able to join a utility or third-party demand-response program using a battery they already own. The important comparison is the program contract: event hours, reserve requirements, compensation method, customer control, overlapping-program restrictions and payment reliability.
The Octopus Energy Texas offering represents another model: combining electricity service with Lunar hardware and energy management. It may reduce upfront equipment costs, but it is limited by geography and may not suit customers who want to own the system outright.
Risks and unresolved questions
Lunar’s commercial success will depend on more than raising capital. It must scale manufacturing, expand its installer network, obtain utility approvals and demonstrate durable customer economics.
- Manufacturing risk: The 20,000- and 100,000-unit figures are targets, not completed deployments.
- Software dependence: VPP value depends on communications, forecasting, cloud services and utility participation.
- Program risk: Utility budgets, net-metering rules, export compensation and demand-response requirements can change.
- Reserve trade-off: Sending energy to the grid may increase compensation but leave less capacity for a later outage.
- Installer constraints: Certified-installer availability can affect project timing and cost.
- Customer economics: Low solar production, frequent outages, high reserve settings or system faults can reduce displayed savings.
- Eligibility conflicts: Existing demand-response enrollment may prevent participation in another program.
- Cybersecurity and control: A connected energy system requires customers to understand how software access, data and remote dispatch are handled.
What to ask before signing
- Is the system available through a certified installer in my utility territory?
- What rate plan will apply after permission to operate?
- Will my solar system be AC-coupled or DC-coupled, and why?
- Which circuits are backed up, and can the system start my largest motor loads?
- What reserve level is required for VPP events?
- How many events, event hours and dispatches are expected?
- Is compensation based on capacity, energy or measured performance?
- Can I pause participation, and does pausing reduce payment?
- Are other demand-response programs or incentives disqualifying?
- What happens to service, control and compensation if Lunar’s software or the VPP program changes?
Bottom line
The $232 million financing validates investor interest in residential storage as both backup equipment and a flexible grid resource. Lunar’s proposition is broader than a battery sale: it combines home hardware, energy-management software and Gridshare’s aggregation layer.
For homeowners, however, the practical value remains local and conditional. California is the clearest current market, Texas availability is tied to an Octopus Energy offering, and VPP earnings are company-reported rather than guaranteed. Lunar’s long-term case will be measured by whether it can meet its manufacturing targets, deploy systems through a reliable installer network and deliver customer economics that remain attractive after utility rules, reserve requirements and real installation costs are included.
