The clearest match for a “luck tree” is the money tree, Pachira aquatica, which is associated with good fortune and prosperity in cultural traditions. Lucky bamboo, Dracaena sanderiana, is another popular symbolic houseplant, though it is neither a true bamboo nor a tree. These associations offer personal or cultural meaning; owning either plant is not shown to change finances or objectively alter a home’s energy.

Lucky bamboo care: water and soil methods
Lucky bamboo has two common growing methods. Whichever you choose, keep it indoors in bright, indirect light; direct sun can brown or damage its leaves, according to Clemson Extension.
Growing lucky bamboo in water
- Set the stalks in a container with enough water to cover the roots and at least one inch of stem.
- Change the water weekly.
- Fertilize every other month at one-quarter of the strength stated on the product label.
- Use pebbles or marbles if needed to hold the stalks upright.
Growing lucky bamboo in soil
- Use a well-drained indoor or tropical potting mix.
- Water when the top inch of soil is dry, then allow excess water to drain.
- Do not leave water standing in the saucer.

What “boosting energy and prosperity” can—and cannot—mean
A plant can make a room feel more welcoming and carry meaning for the people who live there. The money tree and lucky bamboo are associated with luck or prosperity in the cultural traditions described by the New York Botanical Garden and Clemson Extension. Those associations are not evidence that a plant changes a household’s finances or objectively changes its energy. Choose a plant for its symbolism, appearance and care fit rather than as a promise of prosperity.
