The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and Philippine Taekwondo Association (PTA) broke ground on the National Taekwondo Center at Manila’s Rizal Memorial Sports Complex on March 5, 2026. The project will replace the former PSC Bowling Center and is intended to expand athlete training, bring more international tournaments to the Philippines, and give national competitors greater exposure. Construction is targeted for late 2026, although a completion date in early 2027 remains possible.
What is the National Taekwondo Center?
The National Taekwondo Center is a planned training and competition facility being developed through a partnership between the PSC, the government sports agency, and the PTA, the sport’s national governing association. The groundbreaking formed part of the PTA’s 50th-anniversary year and followed a memorandum-of-agreement signing between the two organizations.

The center is designed to provide a permanent venue for national-team preparation, domestic events and larger international competitions. PTA president Rafael Alunan III said the organization had pursued a new training center for 20 years and described the project as a step toward its long-term vision for Philippine taekwondo.
Where is the center being built?
Construction is taking place on the site of the former PSC Bowling Center inside the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex (RMSC) in Manila. RMSC is one of the country’s established government sports campuses, making the project part of a broader effort to modernize existing venues rather than develop an isolated site outside the capital.

When will the National Taekwondo Center open?
The groundbreaking occurred on March 5, 2026. SunStar reporting said the building could be completed before the end of 2026, while other reports placed the target in December 2026 or December 2026 to early 2027. The most accurate current description is a late-2026 target with a possible early-2027 slip; no completion notice has been published in the supplied sources.
How large will the facility be, and how many people can it hold?
SunStar reported a 1,131-square-meter site, four international championship rings, seating for 850 spectators and the ability to train up to 100 taekwondo athletes daily. Other reports describe an approximately 1,000-square-meter project with about 900 seats, so the figures should be treated as planning estimates until the PSC or PTA releases final architectural and operating specifications.
| Planned feature | Reported figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Site area | 1,131 square meters | SunStar, 2026; other reports use an approximately 1,000-square-meter estimate |
| Competition and training rings | Four international championship rings | SunStar, 2026 |
| Spectator seating | 850 seats | SunStar, 2026; other reports cite about 900 seats |
| Daily athlete training capacity | Up to 100 athletes | SunStar, 2026 |
Will it host international taekwondo tournaments?
That is a stated objective of the project. PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio said the new center should allow the Philippines to host more international tournaments while giving national athletes greater exposure. Four championship rings and dedicated spectator seating would support simultaneous competition or training activity, but the center’s eventual event calendar, international accreditation and technical specifications have not yet been announced.

The planned venue also addresses a development gap: athletes need regular access to suitable surfaces and competition-style conditions before representing the country abroad. A dedicated center can consolidate coaching, team preparation and event operations at one government sports complex, subject to the final design and operating plan.
Who is paying for the National Taekwondo Center?
The PSC is not financing the entire project. SunStar reported that the PTA is shouldering a substantial portion of the cost, but neither organization has published a total project budget in the supplied reports.
Separate PSC infrastructure funding includes statutory remittances from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR). Following a Supreme Court ruling, five percent of PAGCOR’s gross earnings is remitted to the PSC; the commission received P340 million in March 2026. PSC chairman Gregorio said those funds would help bring sports facilities up to international standards. The available reporting does not establish that the full P340 million, or any specific share of it, is financing the National Taekwondo Center.

How does the project fit the PSC’s wider facilities program?
The PSC’s Five-Year Sports Development Plan calls for improving existing facilities, building new venues to global standards, widening grassroots access and supporting preparation for international competition. Its policy discussion cites Article XIV, Section 19 of the Philippine Constitution, which directs the state to promote physical education, sports programs, league competitions and amateur sports, including training for international competitions.
The National Taekwondo Center is one example of that facilities strategy. The wider rehabilitation context includes the reopening of the PSC-managed PhilSports Complex in 2025 after renovation. The Presidential Communications Office described PhilSports as a national training and event hub with competition, residential and recovery facilities, including readiness for the FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does “#GroundForGreatness” mean here?
The supplied project brief identifies the center with the hashtag #GroundForGreatness. Available PSC facility documents support a broader government agenda of rehabilitation and international-standard venues, but the supplied official materials do not independently confirm that hashtag as the formal name of a PSC program. It is therefore best understood as a campaign description unless the commission publishes a direct designation.
