The work replaced ageing and damaged panels across 11,000 m² of roof, with project-team meter readings recording average platform light levels between 11 and 56 times higher than before the work began. Suspended sliding decks let much of the construction take place overhead while the station remained in operation, although limited closures were still needed.
What changed in the roof?
Network Rail’s completed project covered the glazing above platforms 1–10. The 11,000 m² area is equivalent, by Network Rail’s comparison, to 8.8 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The contractor was Morgan Sindall Infrastructure.
The old glazing was discoloured and covered in lichen, and some panels were cracked. The renewal included replacing life-expired glass-reinforced plastic panels and broken or loose Georgian wired-glass panels. Network Rail also reports seal repairs, improvements to rainwater catchment and drainage, and restoration of a decorative valance at the station’s north end. These measures addressed both the condition of the roof and its ability to manage water and weather.
Why is the station brighter?
Replacing the discoloured glazing allowed more natural light to reach the platforms. Network Rail’s project team took meter readings on platforms 1–10 and reported average light levels between 11 and 56 times higher than before work started. That range describes the team’s measurements; it is not an independent study or a survey of how passengers perceived the change. Network Rail presents the brighter trainshed as a passenger benefit.

How did the work proceed while the station stayed open?
Instead of filling platforms and the concourse with conventional scaffolding, the project used suspended mobile decks that moved horizontally through the station above the operational space. Network Rail’s 2025 account describes four lightweight decks. The approach enabled much of the work to be carried out overhead during normal station operations.

Network Rail’s account names Morgan Sindall, Palmers Scaffolding, RDG Engineering, Deltaland and Tony Gee among the industry partners involved in the deck approach. The completion announcement identifies Morgan Sindall Infrastructure as contractor; the named partners should not be assumed to have held identical contractual roles.
Was Liverpool Street closed during the refurbishment?
No full, continuous closure was required for the two-year project, but the work did involve some limited closures. In March 2026, the station closed for five weekend days so the team could replace the final cracked panels. The suspended-deck method helped limit disruption; it did not eliminate the need for closures.

Why the station’s scale matters
Network Rail reports 98 million entries and exits at Liverpool Street between April 2024 and March 2025. That dated figure gives context for the challenge of undertaking roof work at a heavily used station; it is not a roof-project result or a current rolling annual total.
The refurbishment is the completed roof project over platforms 1–10. It should not be confused with Network Rail’s separate wider station transformation plans or ticket-gate works.
