Live Home 3D is a strong choice for homeowners, remodelers, and design hobbyists who want to turn a measured floor plan into a furnished 3D model. Its 2D-to-3D workflow, material and lighting tools, terrain features, mobile AR options, and presentation exports make it useful for exploring design ideas and communicating them to builders. However, it is not a replacement for architectural CAD, BIM, structural engineering, professional surveying, or permit-ready construction documentation.
The most important buying considerations are the edition limits, separate platform licenses, differences between desktop and mobile features, and the accuracy of the measurements used to create the model.

Live Home 3D is a home and interior-design application built around a connected 2D floor plan and 3D model. You can draw or trace a plan, add walls and architectural elements, furnish the rooms, apply materials, adjust lighting, and inspect the result in 3D as the design develops.

Despite the promotional word “ultimate,” Live Home 3D is best understood as an accessible space-planning and visualization tool. It is particularly useful for kitchen and bathroom concepts, furniture layouts, remodeling discussions, landscaping ideas, and client or contractor presentations.
How the 2D-to-3D workflow works
- Start a project. Begin with a blank design, template, or imported plan image.
- Create the floor plan. Draw straight or curved walls, rooms, doors, and windows. If tracing an image, establish a known reference dimension first.
- Set the building data. Check wall thickness, ceiling height, floor elevations, and openings rather than relying only on visual appearance.
- Add structure. Depending on platform and edition, this can include stairs, roofs, dormers, balconies, porches, terrain, and other exterior elements.
- Furnish the space. Drag furniture, appliances, plants, lighting, and decorative objects into the plan.
- Apply materials and lighting. Change finishes for floors, walls, ceilings, roofs, and objects, then adjust light and—where supported—time of day or geolocation.
- Inspect the design. Use 2D, 3D, split, camera, and walkthrough views to check circulation, sightlines, clearances, and the overall appearance.
- Export the result. Depending on the platform and edition, export floor plans, still images, videos, panoramas, and 3D models.
This workflow is valuable because a change made in the plan can be evaluated immediately in three dimensions. For example, a homeowner planning a kitchen can test cabinet placement, appliance clearances, flooring, wall color, and lighting before discussing the concept with a contractor.
What can Live Home 3D do?
Floor plans and architectural elements
Live Home 3D includes tools for drawing rooms and walls, measuring dimensions, and building multi-floor designs. Desktop editions advertise straight-wall, arc-wall, and room-drawing tools alongside doors, windows, stairs, roofs, dormers, and other building elements.
The Windows product page currently lists 12 customizable roof templates and 16 dormers. It also identifies custom roofs and building-block tools as Pro features. Those figures and capabilities should not automatically be assumed to apply identically to every platform.
Pro features on supported desktop editions include tools such as terrain editing, 2D elevation views, custom-shaped roofs, and building blocks. These make the application more capable for whole-house concepts and exterior studies, but they do not turn it into a complete construction-documentation system.
For a renovation, begin with measured existing conditions. Confirm wall thickness, room dimensions, ceiling heights, floor levels, door swings, window locations, and openings. A polished 3D model can still be wrong if the source measurements or traced image are wrong.
3D visualization and presentation
The synchronized 3D view lets you navigate through the model, switch viewpoints, and evaluate how finishes and furnishings work together. Supported editions provide camera controls, lighting adjustments, walkthroughs, and presentation exports.
The Windows product page states that supported configurations can produce snapshots up to 16,384 × 16,384 pixels, Ultra HD video, and 360-degree panoramas up to 8,192 × 4,096 pixels. These are official Windows-page specifications, not a guarantee for every device or edition. The online store indicates that resolution, file formats, panorama limits, and ray-tracing capabilities vary between Standard and Pro configurations.

It is useful to distinguish between real-time visualization and final rendering. The former helps you work quickly while changing a design. Higher-quality or ray-traced output is intended for polished presentations and may take more time or require stronger hardware.
Furniture, materials, and custom objects
The Windows product page currently lists more than 2,400 objects and more than 2,100 materials. The library includes furniture, doors, windows, appliances, plants, lighting, and decorative items. Materials can be applied in 2D or 3D, with adjustable tiling for finishes such as flooring, brick, wallpaper, and fabric.

For unusual products or custom furniture, the Windows page advertises importing COLLADA, FBX, OBJ, and 3DS models, as well as downloading objects from Trimble 3D Warehouse. Format support is not the same as guaranteed compatibility. Imported objects can arrive at the wrong scale, face the wrong direction, lack textures, use unsupported materials, or contain so many polygons that they slow a large scene.
Roofs, terrain, and landscaping
Live Home 3D goes beyond room decoration. Supported versions can be used to explore roofs, dormers, terrain, balconies, porches, planting, outdoor furniture, and other exterior ideas. This is useful when evaluating an addition, garden layout, patio, porch, or the relationship between a proposed building and its site.
These tools are best used for design studies and communication. They should not be treated as structural calculations, drainage design, a topographical survey, or evidence that a proposed roof or site arrangement satisfies local regulations.
Mobile AR and room scanning
The iPhone and iPad versions provide touch-oriented controls, while supported devices can offer augmented-reality viewing and room-scanning workflows. The support material says room scanning requires compatible LiDAR hardware. It also identifies an A9 processor or later as a requirement for AR view on supported iOS and iPadOS devices.
The current iOS/iPadOS product page lists iOS/iPadOS 15 or later. Requirements can differ between releases, so check the current platform page rather than relying on an older store summary.

AR and scanning are convenience features, not professional surveying. Irregular walls, sloped surfaces, furniture, poor visibility, and obstructed geometry can affect the result. Independently verify existing conditions before ordering materials, removing walls, relocating services, or preparing work for approval.
Export and sharing
Depending on the edition and platform, Live Home 3D can export still images, videos, floor plans, 360-degree panoramas, and selected 3D model formats. These outputs can help explain a renovation to a homeowner, designer, estimator, or contractor.
Projects can be transferred using services and methods such as iCloud Drive, AirDrop, Dropbox, Google Drive, project-copy export, or email, depending on the device. File transfer should not be confused with real-time multi-user collaboration. A free-version warning worth knowing
The free edition has an unusual project-access limitation. According to the support information, free users can save projects but may access only the most recent project until Standard or Pro is purchased. Creating or opening another project can make earlier projects inaccessible within the free version. Autosave protects the current project, but it does not make the free edition a reliable long-term archive.
If you are testing the software, keep backup copies and avoid opening a new project until you have exported or copied the current one.

The official support information indicates that the applications are sold separately. A Mac purchase does not automatically unlock Windows, iOS/iPadOS, visionOS, or Android. Project portability exists, but it does not create a universal license or guarantee identical features.

What does Live Home 3D cost?
Prices vary by platform, region, currency, tax, store, and promotion. The following U.S.-dollar prices were observed in the official store on August 18, 2026, and should be treated as dated price signals rather than permanent pricing:
- Website lifetime Standard: $59.99, displayed at $49.99 during the observed promotion.
- Website lifetime Pro: $149.99, displayed at $99.99 during the observed promotion.
- Standard in-app subscription: $5.99 monthly or $19.99 annually.
- Pro in-app subscription: $14.99 monthly or $49.99 annually, with a displayed annual sale price of $39.99.
- Additional content packs: commonly $5.99, with an all-existing-and-future-packs option displayed at $69.99.
The official store says website purchases do not currently offer subscriptions, while the Mac App Store does. Apple’s U.S. listing showed similar in-app signals, including Pro lifetime at $99.99 and Standard lifetime at $49.99 during the observed period.
For a one-off renovation, a lifetime license may be attractive if you are buying for the same platform and the required features are included. A subscription lowers the initial cost but continues to charge while active. Neither option should be evaluated without first checking platform licensing and the features included in that particular store version.
Is Live Home 3D easy to use?
Its advertised workflow is approachable because it combines room-drawing tools, drag-and-drop objects, synchronized 2D and 3D views, templates, and a large built-in library. That makes it more accessible for many homeowners than a general-purpose CAD or 3D-modeling package.
The learning curve increases when a project includes multiple floors, custom roofs, terrain, elevation studies, complex lighting, imported models, or high-quality rendering. The software can make design exploration faster, but it cannot remove the need to understand dimensions, clearances, circulation, building components, and the constraints of the existing property.
A practical sequence is to build the measured shell first, save a backup, add openings and levels, and only then begin furnishing and material work. This prevents time being spent decorating a model whose underlying geometry is incorrect.

The free tier becomes restrictive quickly
Watermarks, project access, export limitations, and the floor limit can interfere with a serious renovation workflow. Free is best treated as a trial rather than a complete production tier.
Desktop and mobile do not match perfectly
Rendering, terrain, roofs, elevation tools, camera controls, file formats, maximum output sizes, AR, and room scanning can vary by platform and edition. A feature shown on the Windows or Mac page should not be assumed to exist on Android or iPad in the same form.
Measurements remain your responsibility
Tracing an image, scanning a room, or viewing a convincing 3D model does not prove that the dimensions are correct. Measure existing conditions independently, cross-check dimensions in 2D, verify scale after importing a plan, and confirm wall thicknesses and openings before using the design to order products or plan work.

Supported file formats improve flexibility, but imported objects may have missing textures, incorrect scale, poor orientation, incompatible materials, or excessive geometry. Test custom models in a copy of the project and remove unnecessary detail if performance suffers.

Choose Sweet Home 3D for a simpler, lower-cost desktop workflow
Sweet Home 3D is a credible alternative for users who mainly need straightforward 2D floor plans with simultaneous 3D furnishing. Its official site describes it as free interior-design software for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android.
It may be a better fit when budget is the priority and advanced terrain, roof, lighting, or presentation tools are not important. Live Home 3D is likely the stronger fit when its particular mobile ecosystem, AR workflow, Pro tools, or high-resolution presentation exports matter.
Choose SketchUp for general-purpose 3D modeling
SketchUp is the stronger alternative for users who prioritize flexible 3D modeling, a broad professional ecosystem, and industry interoperability. It is less specialized as a beginner home-planning environment and its official plans are subscription-based.
