For a bulb replacement, start with the light output you want in lumens—not the old bulb’s wattage. Then choose a color appearance and color quality that suit the room, and check that the bulb physically fits and works with the fixture, enclosure and dimmer. For a larger building retrofit, treat those choices as a starting point, not a lighting-design specification.
Start with brightness: compare lumens, not watts
Lumens measure the amount of light a bulb produces; watts measure the electricity it uses. A traditional 60-watt incandescent produces about 800 lumens, while an LED producing the same 800 lumens can use about 9 watts, according to the Federal Trade Commission’s August 2023 consumer guidance. The exact wattage varies by product, so check the package rather than assuming all bulbs with the same lumen output use the same power.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) lists these LED wattage ranges for general-purpose E26 lamps as a replacement guide. They are not a guarantee for every bulb or fixture.

Choose a white-light appearance that suits the space
Correlated color temperature (CCT), measured in kelvins (K), describes whether white light appears warmer and more yellow or cooler and more blue. It does not measure brightness or color accuracy. Lower Kelvin values appear warmer; higher values appear cooler. If you are replacing one bulb in a room, choosing a similar CCT can help keep the light from looking noticeably different.

Check color rendering when how things look matters
The color rendering index (CRI) indicates how faithfully a light source renders colors relative to a reference. DOE guidance recommends CRI 80 as a general minimum for interior lighting and describes CRI 90 or higher as excellent color fidelity. CRI is an imperfect measure, particularly for saturated reds; the R9 value or the IES TM-30 fidelity and gamut indices can provide additional context. These measures help compare color quality, but they do not replace choosing a light that looks right in the space.
Compare efficiency and rated life without treating either as a promise
For similar light output, a well-designed LED can use less energy than an incandescent bulb. Compare the products’ actual lumens and watts rather than relying on a general efficiency claim. A simple lumens-per-watt calculation—lumens divided by watts—can help compare energy use when the products are intended for the same application and provide similar light distribution.

An LED’s stated useful life does not necessarily mean it will operate at full brightness until a sudden failure. ENERGY STAR explains that LED useful life is often measured to the point when light output has fallen by 30%. Heat management also matters: ENERGY STAR calls thermal management generally the most important factor in successful LED performance over its lifetime. High operating temperatures can accelerate light degradation and shorten useful life.
DOE’s 2023 purchasing guidance says ENERGY STAR-qualified bulbs in that guidance must last at least 10,000 hours; that is a program criterion, not a universal guarantee for every LED bulb. Do not treat a rated life as a promise that a particular product will never fail.

Confirm fit, enclosure rating and control compatibility
Before buying, check the bulb’s base, shape and dimensions against the fixture, along with its suitability for the intended application. Integrated electronics can make some LED bulbs wider near the base than an incandescent replacement. Enclosed fixtures trap heat, so use only bulbs whose packaging or technical specifications indicate they are suitable for that use.
- Base and shape: Verify the base type and bulb shape required by the fixture; the DOE wattage ranges above apply specifically to general-purpose E26 LED lamps.
- Size and clearance: Check the bulb’s dimensions, including its width near the base, against the fixture’s available space.
- Enclosure: Confirm that the bulb is rated for an enclosed fixture if the fixture surrounds it.
- Dimming: Check that the bulb is dimmable and compatible with the existing dimmer. LED bulbs do not necessarily work properly with every dimmer.
- Application: Confirm that the product specifications cover the fixture and controls you intend to use.
Decide whether a bulb replacement is enough
A screw-in LED is not the only option. Recessed downlights and integrated LED fixtures may suit some installations better than a replacement bulb, and LED systems can support dimming and sensor controls. The right choice depends on the existing fixture, wiring and control setup. A complex building retrofit calls for a professional assessment rather than extrapolating household bulb guidance into a project specification.

Compare products for the same job
When choosing between two bulbs or fixtures, compare them in the same application. A lower wattage alone does not make one the better choice if its output, distribution, color appearance or compatibility differs.
- Light output in lumens and how the fixture distributes light.
- Watts, or lumens per watt, for products with comparable output and application.
- CCT and color-rendering information, including R9 or TM-30 data when relevant and available.
- Dimming and sensor-control compatibility.
- Physical fit and suitability for an enclosed fixture.
- Rated life and warranty, read as product specifications rather than failure-free guarantees.
- Purchase price and energy costs in your location.
There is no universal best bulb or fixture without knowing the room, fixture, budget and preferred light appearance. For a building-system comparison, also account for retrofit compatibility, control capability and commissioning needs.
