LG Sound Suite is a real modular home-theater system built around Dolby Atmos FlexConnect, but “put speakers anywhere” is marketing shorthand. Its H7 soundbar and compatible M5 or M7 wireless speakers use calibration to account for unusual distances and angles, making Atmos more practical in rooms where speakers cannot sit in conventional positions. They still need power, wireless connectivity, sensible placement, and a suitable listening environment.
The short answer
LG Sound Suite uses Dolby Atmos FlexConnect to measure where its speakers are located and adapt the audio rendering to those positions. That can help when a sofa is against a wall, the seating is off-center, or running speaker wire is impractical.

It does not make placement irrelevant. A speaker behind a cabinet, blocked by furniture, pressed against a listener, or disconnected from the network will not perform like a properly positioned speaker in the room. Calibration can compensate for geometry; it cannot repeal room acoustics or produce identical results from every seat.

What Dolby Atmos FlexConnect actually does
Dolby Atmos is an object-based audio format. A soundtrack can describe effects such as aircraft, rain, or dialogue as audio objects with positional information rather than assigning every sound permanently to a single channel.
Dolby Atmos FlexConnect is a playback and calibration technology. It analyzes the connected speakers’ positions and uses signal processing to redistribute or spatially shape those objects so their perceived locations better match the Atmos mix, even when the physical layout is unconventional.
That distinction matters. FlexConnect can attempt to create the perception of height and movement, but a speaker on the floor is not physically producing sound from the ceiling. Its result should not be treated as identical to an installed system with ceiling speakers and carefully positioned discrete channels.
LG Sound Suite is LG’s hardware ecosystem built around FlexConnect. LG’s H7 also adds Sound Follow, an LG-specific feature that uses ultra-wideband sensing to identify or track the listener’s position and adjust the preferred listening area. Sound Follow is separate from Dolby Atmos FlexConnect, and support for an LG-specific feature should not be assumed for every compatible third-party product.

At list price, the main configurations cost:
- H7 alone: $999.99
- H7 plus two M5 speakers: $1,499.97
- H7 plus two M7 speakers: $1,799.97
- H7 plus two M7 speakers and the W7: $2,399.96
- H7 plus two M5 speakers and the W7: $2,099.96
These totals exclude tax, shipping, discounts, and optional stands. LG lists the FS-M71 stand for the M7 at $149.
LG’s H7 specification sheet lists it as a 5.1.3-channel system with 12 speaker units, while the consumer product page markets it as 9.1.6 spatial audio. Those labels should not be treated as interchangeable: the former describes the listed physical channel specification, while the latter is LG’s spatial-audio designation.
How setup works
The exact screens can vary with the TV, firmware, and configuration, but the practical workflow is:
- Connect the H7 to the TV using HDMI ARC or eARC, unless using a supported LG TV configuration.
- Plug in the H7, wireless speakers, and subwoofer.
- Add the components through LG’s setup process and ThinQ app where required.
- Place the speakers in practical locations rather than forcing them into a conventional surround diagram.
- Run room calibration.
- Allow the system to measure speaker positions and room behavior.
- Test with a native Dolby Atmos movie, game, or music source.
- Recalibrate if you move the speakers, furniture, room orientation, or primary listening position.
LG describes the H7 as having Room Calibration Pro; the M5 and M7 also list room-calibration functionality. Calibration is not a one-time exemption from placement rules. It is the step that makes the placement-adaptation system useful.
What “anywhere” means in a real home
Flexible placement can mean a speaker on a side table rather than directly behind the sofa, unequal distances from the listening position, or speakers at different angles and heights. This is particularly useful for renters and apartment dwellers who cannot run wire or install ceiling speakers.

Sofa against the rear wall
Conventional rear channels have little room behind the listener. FlexConnect may make a nearby or offset placement more practical, but speakers positioned extremely close to the sofa can still make surround effects uneven or distracting.
Off-center seating
Calibration can account for unequal distances and angles, making the primary seat more usable. It does not guarantee the same image for everyone on a wide sofa. Sound Follow may help center the experience around a moving listener on compatible LG hardware, but it is not a substitute for uniform room coverage.
Open-plan rooms
Large, irregular, reflective spaces are more difficult for any calibration system. FlexConnect is a design solution for imperfect rooms, not a guarantee of cinema-like imaging across an open floor plan.
Furniture and obstructions
A speaker still needs a reasonably clear acoustic path. A cabinet, thick shelf, wall, or nearby object can change its tonal balance and weaken spatial cues. Put speakers on stable surfaces with adequate room to project sound.
Every wireless speaker also needs power. “Wireless” refers to audio transmission, not cordless operation. Expect power adapters or cords, a stable home network for setup and some connected features, and HDMI cabling between the TV and H7 when the H7 is the main audio device.
TV compatibility
The H7 can work with a non-LG TV through HDMI ARC or eARC. LG’s FAQ says the H7 can provide FlexConnect functionality with compatible M5 or M7 speakers even when the television itself does not support Dolby Atmos FlexConnect.

Do not interpret “works with any TV” as universal compatibility. A non-LG television needs the appropriate HDMI ARC/eARC connection, and the desired speaker configuration must be supported by the H7 and current software.
The M5 specification sheet says Dolby Atmos support requires two or more M5 speakers. One M5 should not be treated as a complete Atmos surround system.

How many configurations are supported?
LG’s published numbers are not consistent. Its U.S. launch announcement describes 27 possible configurations, while its global newsroom announcement cites 50. The difference may reflect regional component availability or different ways of counting configurations.

LG also says the system can scale to a 13.1.7-channel home theater. That is an announced configuration capability, not a claim that the H7 alone contains 13.1.7 discrete physical channels. Treat the figure as LG’s system-level description.
Similarly, do not assume that any Bluetooth or Wi-Fi speaker can join the system. Dolby Atmos FlexConnect is intended as a broader technology, but Sound Suite is an LG ecosystem. Compatibility depends on the model, firmware, and manufacturer-supported device list.
What the system cannot fix
- No power: wireless speakers still need outlets.
- Weak networking: pairing, setup, updates, or playback can fail on an unreliable network.
- Bad acoustics: calibration cannot make a blocked or badly placed speaker acoustically transparent.
- Limited seating: a result optimized for one primary listener may not be equally convincing across the room.
- Non-Atmos content: stereo or ordinary surround content is not the same as a native Atmos mix. An upmix may expand it, but it does not create the original discrete Atmos objects.
- Firmware dependence: compatibility and features can change with updates. LG has discussed features such as support for more than one W7 and Google Cast in connection with software updates, so check current firmware and product pages rather than relying on launch promises.
If a speaker disappears during setup, update the system, keep all components powered, confirm that the TV and H7 are on the intended network, then reset and re-add the missing speaker if necessary. Run calibration again after any move.
Who should buy LG Sound Suite?
- Buy the H7 alone if you want a premium soundbar, use a non-LG TV, or want an expansion path without buying the entire system at once.
- Add two M5 speakers if you have a modest room and want the least expensive route into the Sound Suite surround ecosystem. Two M5 units are required for M5-based Atmos support.
- Choose M7 speakers for a larger room, more capable individual wireless speakers, or more substantial music playback. The higher price is harder to justify if you only want occasional rear effects.
- Add the W7 if bass impact matters, the room is large, or the H7 does not deliver enough low-frequency weight. Apartment dwellers should also consider bass transfer to neighboring units.
The system is most compelling when room geometry or installation restrictions are the problem. Its value is less obvious in a small room where a conventional soundbar is sufficient.
When a conventional system is better
Choose a conventional premium soundbar with rear speakers if you want a simpler package and can place those speakers conventionally. Choose an AV receiver and passive speakers if you prioritize broad compatibility, upgradeability, maximum channel separation, or predictable discrete-channel imaging.
Choose installed ceiling speakers when the strongest physical height effect matters more than rental-friendliness and installation cost. A conventional wired system is less flexible, but it avoids some proprietary compatibility and wireless-network dependencies.
Verdict
LG’s innovation is not the elimination of speaker placement. It is the conversion of placement from a rigid installation requirement into a calibration variable. For a difficult room, an off-center sofa, or a renter who wants Atmos without running wire, that can be genuinely useful.
But the H7, M5, M7, and W7 remain a costly ecosystem, and “anywhere” should be read as far more freely than usual, not literally anywhere. Buyers who want the most predictable physical surround field—or who can install proper rear and ceiling speakers—should still consider a conventional system.
