LG introduced ThinQ ON at IFA 2024 as more than a smart speaker: it is a compact smart-home hub designed to control compatible LG appliances, Matter devices, Thread and Zigbee accessories, and selected third-party services through conversational voice commands.
However, ThinQ ON is not a universal, fully local home-automation controller. Its usefulness depends on regional availability, compatible appliances, firmware, language support, account connections, and a documented 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi requirement.

What is LG ThinQ ON?
LG announced ThinQ ON on August 29, 2024, ahead of its IFA 2024 demonstration in Berlin. LG describes it as an AI home hub, while its product specifications classify it as a smart speaker with an IoT hub.

- A smart speaker: It has a mono 3-watt speaker, two MEMS microphones and voice controls.
- An appliance controller: It can provide voice control for compatible Wi-Fi-enabled LG appliances registered in the LG ThinQ app.
- A connectivity hub: It supports Matter, Thread, Zigbee, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy.
- An AI assistant: LG says it can interpret conversational requests, use context and coordinate supported devices and services.
LG’s IFA announcement presents ThinQ ON as the centre of a connected home, but it should not be confused with an autonomous household robot. It still requires compatible hardware, setup, user permissions and, for some functions, internet-connected services.

What can the AI voice assistant do?
LG says ThinQ ON is designed to understand natural-language requests instead of relying only on fixed commands. The company also says it can interpret household conditions, learn routines and preferences, provide information and coordinate multiple devices.
LG’s demonstrations included:
- Reducing an air purifier’s fan speed after a request to make it quieter.
- Choosing an activewear drying cycle after a washing machine finishes.
- Starting a bedtime scene that dims lights and changes the room environment.
- Providing travel-time information or helping with a taxi request.
- Offering recipe recommendations and nutritional information.
These examples come from LG’s launch demonstrations and product descriptions. They should not be treated as proof that every function is available in every country, language or appliance model. The exact result can depend on the device, firmware, region, connected account and wording of the request.
LG describes the system as using generative AI and large-language-model technology for speech recognition, intent analysis and responses. That does not mean an LLM directly operates every appliance. The available product information also says that some requests may be handled without LLM processing.

Compatibility: Matter, Thread, Zigbee and Homey
ThinQ ON’s published connectivity list includes:
- Matter 1.2
- Thread 1.3
- Zigbee 3.0
- 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi 4, 802.11 b/g/n
- Bluetooth Low Energy 5.2
- Homey OS and edge-control capabilities
LG says ThinQ ON is Matter-certified and can connect to third-party IoT products. Matter is useful because it creates a shared compatibility foundation, but it does not guarantee that every Matter device or feature will work with ThinQ ON. Compatibility can still depend on the Matter device type, supported feature clusters, firmware, commissioning method, region and language.

It is also important to separate the different layers of compatibility:
- Direct Matter support: A compatible Matter device may pair directly, subject to ThinQ ON’s supported device types and features.
- LG ThinQ integration: LG appliances generally need Wi-Fi connectivity and registration in the ThinQ app.
- Homey integrations: LG acquired Athom, the company behind Homey. LG cited Homey’s ability to connect with more than 50,000 devices and its roughly 1,000 apps at the time of the announcement. Those figures describe the broader Homey ecosystem, not a guarantee that ThinQ ON directly supports all of them.
- Cloud services: Services such as weather, news, music, calendars and taxi bookings may require separate accounts, regional support or internet access.
- Additional bridges: Some devices may still require their own bridge, app or platform connection.
Which LG appliances work with ThinQ ON?
LG’s Korean product information says ThinQ ON voice support covers 26 types of LG appliances, provided they are Wi-Fi-enabled and registered in the ThinQ app. This may include product categories such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, ovens, air conditioners, air purifiers and vacuums.
That does not mean every ThinQ-branded appliance exposes every function to voice control. Compatibility depends on the appliance model, country, firmware, available controls, account registration and the particular command. ThinQ ON can act as a voice interface for compatible LG appliances; it does not automatically add smart features to every LG product.

Important Wi-Fi limitation
LG’s Korean support information says ThinQ ON connects only to 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi. A 5-GHz-only network or an ax-only router configuration is not supported according to that documentation.
This may matter in homes with separate IoT networks, Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E settings, or routers configured to disable older 2.4-GHz modes. A combined 2.4- and 5-GHz network under one name may work, but the regional setup instructions should be checked before purchase. Regional firmware or documentation could differ.
Privacy, security and cloud dependence
LG says ThinQ ON uses its proprietary LG Shield security system. LG’s announcement says customer data is encrypted and stored separately, with measures intended to prevent tampering with operational code.

Buyers seeking a privacy-first, local-only controller should therefore treat ThinQ ON differently from a platform such as Home Assistant. Voice control, edge control and cloud-connected appliance management are not interchangeable terms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Availability and price
ThinQ ON debuted in 2024; it is not a new August 2026 launch. The clearest current retail evidence is LG Korea’s listing for model HMAK4W. That page showed a regular price of 271,000 Korean won and a displayed promotional price of 246,000 won when checked. Promotions can change, and those figures should not be converted into a US MSRP.
The available evidence does not establish a US retail launch, US price, US warranty coverage or English-language feature parity. Buyers outside South Korea should confirm an official local product page, supported languages, service availability and warranty terms before importing or purchasing the device.
Who should consider ThinQ ON?
ThinQ ON may make sense when:
- You already own several recent LG ThinQ appliances.
- You want conversational voice control rather than separate appliance apps.
- You want Matter, Thread and Zigbee support in one compact hub.
- You are comfortable using LG’s account and cloud ecosystem.
- The hardware and services are officially supported in your country.
- You are interested in LG’s Homey-related third-party integration strategy.
It may be a poor fit when:
- ThinQ ON is not officially sold or supported where you live.
- Your home relies mainly on non-Matter devices.
- Your router is configured for 5-GHz-only or ax-only operation.
- You require a fully local, privacy-first controller.
- You expect it to replace Google Assistant or Alexa automatically.
- You need every function of every appliance exposed to voice control.
- You want detailed local APIs, developer tooling or advanced automation logic.
- You do not want to maintain multiple vendor accounts.
How it compares with other smart-home approaches
Homey Pro is the closer comparison for broad multi-brand automation and is the platform most directly connected to LG’s Athom acquisition. ThinQ ON is positioned more around LG appliances, conversational AI and AI-home services.

- With a breathtaking screen size of up to 140 inches, the ceiling-mountable HU70LAB delivers 4K UHD resolution, leveraging XPR* with 8.3 million pixels (3840 x 2160), four times the resolution of Full HD
- Wheel-less LED technology uses a 4-channel LED with RGB separate color and Dynamic green, overcoming conventional projector defects such as discoloration of LCD and the rainbow effect* of DLP for a vivid picture with rich and deep color
- Remote Focus allows you to zoom in on areas on the screen with an improved 1.25x zoom. Use the included LG Magic Remote to adjust the screen size without relocating the projector
- HDR 10 with Dynamic Tone Mapping delivers optimized picture quality frame by frame. TruMotion technology generates animation frames between existing ones to make animation look and feel more fluid
- Use your voice to control your favorite content—AI ThinQ has Google Assistant and Alex built-in. Magic Remote and Bluetooth compatibility let you connect and navigate easily as well
Home Assistant is better suited to users who prioritise local control, dashboards, custom integrations and complex automation. It generally demands more setup and maintenance than a turnkey appliance assistant.
Google Nest, Amazon Echo, Apple HomePod and Samsung SmartThings may be more suitable for households already committed to those ecosystems. Their suitability depends on the user’s existing devices, preferred assistant and required Matter features.
Bottom line
LG ThinQ ON is more ambitious than a conventional voice speaker. It combines a compact speaker with appliance control, Matter, Thread, Zigbee, Homey-related technology and LG’s conversational AI strategy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBut its practical value is conditional. The key questions are whether it is officially available in your market, whether your LG appliances and third-party devices are supported, whether your network can provide 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi, and whether you are comfortable with LG’s account and cloud ecosystem. For an LG-heavy home in a supported region, it could be a useful central interface. For local-first users or buyers seeking a broadly available platform-neutral hub, alternatives may be a better fit.
Check LG’s regional ThinQ ON product information before relying on launch demonstrations, Korean pricing or headline compatibility figures.
