Yes—LG ThinQ ON is a real, standalone smart-home hub. It combines a compact smart speaker, LG appliance controller, Matter/Thread/Zigbee connectivity and a conversational AI interface. LG unveiled it at IFA 2024; LG Korea now sells model HMAK4W, with a March 2025 launch month listed on its product page. Its strongest case is an LG-heavy home, not a guaranteed universal replacement for Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, Homey or Home Assistant.
What ThinQ ON is
ThinQ ON is a dedicated hub rather than a feature hidden inside the LG ThinQ phone app. LG describes it as a “Smart Speaker with IoT Hub”: a small Linux-based unit with a mono speaker, microphones, appliance controls and radios for connected-home devices. LG’s IFA announcement positions it as the center of its “AI Home” strategy.

What the AI actually does
LG presents ThinQ ON as a natural-language interface for compatible appliances and services. You can ask for an appliance status, issue a control request, create or invoke routines, and continue a conversation without repeating the wake phrase. LG also describes weather, news, music, calendar and notification functions, plus room- or space-based commands.
Conversational limits
LG Korea says continuous conversation can run for up to five sentences, with the next utterance made within five seconds, and that the mode must be enabled in ThinQ ON settings. That is a bounded follow-up feature, not unlimited conversational memory.
Cloud AI and reliability
LG Korea states that the generative-AI service uses an OpenAI large language model through Microsoft Azure OpenAI infrastructure. The service is therefore not presented as entirely on-device. LG also warns that AI responses may be inaccurate or unreliable and that the underlying language-model service can change. Verify consequential appliance actions in the ThinQ app.
LG’s product information and AI disclosures are on the Korean HMAK4W product page.

Which devices it can control
LG ThinQ appliances
The most dependable compatibility is with Wi-Fi-capable LG products registered to the same ThinQ account. LG’s Korean page lists TVs, washers, WashTowers, washer-dryer combinations, dryers, Styler garment-care appliances, cordless and robot vacuums, refrigerators, kimchi and wine refrigerators, ovens, microwave ovens, water purifiers, dishwashers, cooktops, Homebrew products, Tiiun plant appliances, air conditioners, air purifiers, dehumidifiers, ceiling fans, AeroTower products, humidifiers, ventilation systems and shoe-care appliances.
LG refers to both 23 and 26 appliance types in different sections of the same page (one list is dated March 2026). Treat the safe conclusion as more than 20 categories; the exact count and available commands vary by model, region, firmware and software version.
Third-party devices and protocols
ThinQ ON lists Matter, Matter over Thread, Zigbee, Bluetooth, Homey OS, third-party-device support and edge control. LG says the product is Matter-certified. Certification and protocol support improve the odds of interoperability, but they do not guarantee that every Matter light, lock, sensor or plug—or every feature on one of those devices—will appear in ThinQ ON. Device type, firmware, region and the relevant platform integration still matter.
LG’s strategy is linked to its acquisition of an 80% stake in Athom, announced in July 2024. LG said Homey Pro supported more than 50,000 devices and that the Homey App Store had about 1,000 applications at the time. Those are LG’s stated Homey figures, not a promise that all of those devices are directly controllable from every ThinQ ON installation. See the Athom acquisition announcement and Homey Pro.

- Intuitive touch controls and a remote give you plenty of options to stay in control with comfort. In addition to the remote, batteries, stand, mobile device holder, power cable and quick start guide are included
Older LG products
Owning an LG appliance is not enough. The product generally needs Wi-Fi and ThinQ registration. LG cites TVs from 2019 onward, or models running webOS 4.5 or later, in its notes. One FAQ says routines are available for products launched from 2020 onward; older products may be limited to status checks or voice commands. Remote-control permissions are also required for some laundry and garment-care functions.

Setup requirements and procedure
What you need
- An LG ThinQ account and the ThinQ app from Google Play or Apple’s App Store.
- A compatible LG appliance with Wi-Fi and ThinQ registration.
- Internet access and a compatible 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
- Correct regional, language, firmware and app support for the desired function.
- Additional Matter, Zigbee or Homey setup for third-party devices.
Basic setup
- Install and sign in to the LG ThinQ app.
- Make sure the router offers 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. ThinQ ON cannot connect directly to a 5 GHz network, and an 802.11ax-only configuration will not connect; the listed router modes require b/g/n/ax support rather than ax-only operation.
- Power the hub with its USB-C cable and adapter.
- Register ThinQ ON in the app.
- Add compatible LG appliances to the same ThinQ account.
- Assign appliances to rooms or spaces.
- Enable continuous conversation and any desired service integrations.
- Test a simple status request before creating multi-device routines.
- Add supported third-party products through the applicable Matter, Zigbee, Homey or ThinQ flow.
App labels can change. If setup fails, first expose a 2.4 GHz network, disable an “ax only” router mode, check internet access and avoid isolating the phone from IoT devices during registration.

LG says ThinQ ON can control up to 20 devices at once and check the status of up to 10. Results can vary with the wording of a request, so LG recommends checking the ThinQ app when controlling multiple appliances or spaces.

Quick Recap
ThinQ ON compared with major alternatives
| Platform | Primary strength | How it differs from ThinQ ON |
|---|---|---|
| Homey Pro | Broad multi-brand automation | More established as an open automation hub; ThinQ ON emphasizes LG appliances and conversational AI. |
| Amazon Echo | Alexa routines and broad availability | General-purpose assistant; LG functions may depend on ThinQ integration and exposed controls. |
| Google Home/Nest | Google services, voice control and display options | More display- and Google-centric; ThinQ ON is appliance- and LG-centric. |
| HomePod mini | Apple Home, Siri and Matter | Best for Apple households; it does not provide ThinQ ON’s LG-focused AI experience. |
| Home Assistant Green | Local control, privacy and customization | More configurable but requires more setup; ThinQ ON is the simpler cloud-connected appliance interface. |
Who should choose ThinQ ON?
- Households with several recent LG ThinQ appliances.
- People who want appliance status, notifications and routines without opening a phone app.
- Buyers interested in Matter, Thread, Zigbee and Homey-related expansion.
- Users comfortable with cloud AI and region-dependent services.
Who should skip it?
- Homes built mainly around Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa.
- People who require local-only processing, offline operation or maximum privacy.
- Households with few compatible LG appliances or older models without ThinQ registration.
- Buyers in markets where LG does not officially sell or support ThinQ ON.
- Anyone needing a 5 GHz-only network or universal control of every smart-home device.
- Listeners seeking a premium music speaker; the hub has only a 3 W mono speaker.
Common failure points
- Wi-Fi setup fails: confirm 2.4 GHz service, avoid ax-only mode, verify internet access and keep the phone and hub on a network that permits IoT setup.
- An appliance appears in ThinQ but will not respond: check model support, Wi-Fi registration, permissions, region, firmware and whether the requested function is exposed to voice control.
- A routine works on one appliance but not another: connected status does not mean identical automation support, especially on older products.
- A third-party device does not expose every control: Matter or Zigbee compatibility does not guarantee the full feature set in ThinQ ON.
- An AI answer is wrong or an action is unexpected: treat conversational output as assistance, then verify important actions in the ThinQ app.
