Care for a Lemon Lime prayer plant by giving it bright, indirect light, evenly moist but well-drained soil, and a humid, warm spot away from cold drafts. Water less in winter, and divide the plant to propagate it.

What is a Lemon Lime prayer plant?

Lemon Lime is a cultivar of Maranta leuconeura, a tropical perennial commonly grown indoors. Its leaves typically lie more horizontally by day and lift at night. Look for light green to yellow variegation along the midrib. “Prayer plant” is also used for other plants, so the common name alone may not identify the species. North Carolina State University Extension lists Lemon Lime among the cultivars.

Where should you place it?

Choose a bright spot with filtered or indirect light. Strong direct sun can bleach or burn the leaves, while low light may cause the leaf color to fade. Aim for useful ambient light without harsh sunlight falling through a window onto the foliage. As North Carolina Extension puts it, “Too much sun will bleach out the attractive leaves colors.”

How should you water and pot it?

During active growth, keep the potting medium evenly moist but not waterlogged. Check the soil and adjust to its moisture and the season rather than following a rigid weekly schedule. Reduce watering in winter, when growth is slower.

Use a well-drained potting medium. Illinois Extension says regular potting mix is suitable, while the Missouri Botanical Garden describes a soil-based potting mix. Do not let water stand on the crown—the point where the stems meet—as this can contribute to stem rot.

How much humidity and warmth does it need?

High humidity is beneficial, but the cited cultivation guidance does not establish a single required humidity percentage for this cultivar. If indoor air is dry, try a humidified room or place the pot above a tray of wet pebbles; the Royal Horticultural Society also mentions misting or a gravel tray.

Keep the plant away from cold drafts and low temperatures. The Missouri Botanical Garden’s cultivation guidance says temperatures should not dip below 60°F.

When and how should you feed it?

Feed modestly during active growth rather than using heavy doses. The Royal Horticultural Society describes monthly feeding, and the Missouri Botanical Garden recommends monthly fertilizer during active growth with a substantial reduction from autumn to late winter. North Carolina Extension warns that over-fertilizing can burn leaves, so follow the product’s directions and avoid applying more than the plant needs.

How can you propagate it?

Division is a practical home method. When repotting, separate a portion of the plant with roots and growth attached, then pot it in suitable, well-drained mix. North Carolina Extension recommends dividing the rhizomes. The Royal Horticultural Society also lists basal cuttings and seed, but division is the straightforward option for a home grower.

How do you troubleshoot common problems?

  • Bleached or faded leaves: Strong sun can bleach foliage, while too little light can diminish its color. Move the plant to bright, indirect light.
  • Brown or burned leaves: North Carolina Extension notes that high fluoride and over-fertilization can damage leaves. Review fertilizer use and water quality rather than assuming one cause.
  • Rotting stems or roots: Check that the pot drains well and that water is not collecting on the crown.
  • Dry, stressed foliage: Consider whether the air is too dry and try a humidified room or pebble tray.
  • Signs of pests: Spider mites and mealybugs are occasional problems. Inspect leaves and stems if the plant looks stressed.
