Legrand’s 50A Turnlok plug and connector family is designed for temporary-power work where large cords, repeated handling and demanding schedules make connection security especially important. The May 2024 announcement describes an adjustable external cord clamp for 8 AWG–4 AWG cords, same-plane hex-head termination screws, brass alloy blades and contacts, a nylon 66 shell, external cord grips and a flexible rubber grommet for SO cord. Those features can simplify preparation and strain relief, but the available material does not provide model numbers, installation torque values, compatibility charts or independent time-and-safety test results. Treat the product as a hardware option to verify against the exact cord, mating device, voltage, amperage and electrical requirements on your project.
Buildings’ May 15, 2024 article presents the family for temporary-power applications. Legrand’s detailed feature announcement appears in the May 2024 issue of Electrical Products & Solutions (PDF).

What the 50A Turnlok family is—and what it is not
A Turnlok plug or connector is a locking power-connection device, not a general-purpose wire connector. The family discussed here carries a 50A product rating designation and is presented for temporary power, including situations described as challenging environments and tight deadlines. A plug mates with a receptacle; a connector mates with a plug. The exact configuration, voltage and listing depend on the catalog model, so “50A Turnlok” alone is not enough information to order a replacement or design a circuit.
The announcement’s claim that the products provide a “faster, safer, and more reliable solution for installing and securing connections” is Legrand’s stated design rationale. It is not the result of an independent comparative test. No measured installation-time reduction, labor-cost saving, failure rate or field-safety study is supplied in the cited material.

Why the design matters on temporary-power work
Temporary-power assemblies are assembled, moved, disconnected and reassembled more often than fixed wiring. A connection therefore has to do more than make electrical contact once: the cord entry must remain supported, terminations must be tightened consistently, and the enclosure must protect the connection from routine handling. Large conductors also make cable preparation and clamp fit more demanding.
Legrand’s design addresses those installation points directly. The clamp is adjustable across a broad stated cord range, the termination heads are accessible from the same plane, and the shell and strain-relief components are specified materials rather than unspecified molded parts. These characteristics may reduce awkward manipulation during assembly, but they do not remove the need to follow the current instructions for the exact model.
Features that distinguish the product family
Adjustable external cord clamp for 8 AWG–4 AWG cords
The May 2024 announcement says the external cord clamp accommodates cords from 8 AWG through 4 AWG and includes longer screws for larger cables. That range is a selection aid, not permission to use any cord with any model. American Wire Gauge identifies conductor size; the finished cord also has an outer diameter, jacket construction and rating that must fit the product’s entry and intended use.
An external clamp lets the installer secure the cord at the outside of the device rather than relying on the electrical terminals to resist pulling. During selection, compare the actual cord construction and diameter with the model’s current instructions. If the cord falls outside the stated range, stop and select a compatible device instead of forcing the clamp to close.

Same-plane hex-head termination screws
Legrand describes same-plane hex-head terminations as allowing torque to be applied while reducing the chance of a screwdriver slipping. The practical benefit is access: a driver or nut driver can approach the termination without the offset or cramped angle found in some housings. The reduced-slip statement is the manufacturer’s design rationale, not a quantified safety finding.
Use the tool type and tightening procedure specified for the exact model. The announcement does not publish a torque value, conductor-preparation dimension or acceptable alternative tool. Do not substitute a guessed torque or rely on feel when the product documentation provides a required value.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBrass alloy blades and contacts
The announcement identifies the blades and contacts as brass alloy. These are the current-carrying interfaces that mate with the corresponding device. Material alone does not establish a complete performance rating: contact pressure, plating, temperature limits, enclosure design and certification are model-specific details that still need confirmation.
Nylon 66 shell
The outer shell is described as nylon 66. It forms the insulating body around the connection and contributes to mechanical protection. The announcement does not state a temperature rating, impact rating, chemical-resistance rating or environmental certification for every model, so those properties should be checked in the current catalog documentation before use in an unusually hot, wet or contaminated location.

External cord grips and a flexible rubber grommet
In addition to the adjustable clamp, the product description identifies external cord grips and an integral flexible rubber grommet around SO cord. Together, these features are intended to support the cord and close the entry around it. A grommet is not a substitute for a correctly sized clamp: both the cord support and the enclosure fit must be correct for the assembly.

- Identify the complete device. Record the catalog number, plug or connector configuration, voltage, number of poles and grounding arrangement from the current manufacturer literature. A 50A label by itself does not establish mating compatibility.
- Identify the cord. Confirm conductor gauge, conductor count, jacket type, outer diameter and cord rating. Compare those values with the model’s permitted range; the announcement’s 8 AWG–4 AWG statement is the available family-level range.
- Confirm the mating device. A Turnlok plug must mate with the correct Turnlok receptacle or connector configuration. Do not assume that devices sharing an amperage number share the same geometry or voltage.
- Check the work environment. Review the model’s enclosure, temperature, moisture, impact and chemical limitations before placing it where the cord will be exposed to weather, wash-down, oils or abrasive handling.
- Plan the installation tools. Obtain the specified hex driver, stripping tools and torque equipment before opening the housing. The announcement does not provide a universal torque value, so use the current instructions for the exact model.
- Verify the governing requirements. Have the installation reviewed against the applicable electrical code, project specifications and inspection requirements. A qualified person should resolve any conflict between a product instruction and a site requirement before energizing.
A safe installation workflow
The following is a planning sequence, not a replacement for Legrand’s model-specific instructions or the requirements of the authority having jurisdiction.
- De-energize and verify. Isolate the cord or circuit, apply the site’s lockout procedure where required, and verify absence of voltage with properly rated test equipment.
- Inspect the parts. Check the shell, blades or contacts, termination screws, clamp, cord grips and rubber grommet for cracks, deformation, corrosion or missing hardware. Do not install damaged parts.
- Prepare the cord exactly as specified. Measure the jacket removal and conductor exposure from the current instructions. Avoid nicking conductor strands or cutting away more jacket than the enclosure and clamp require.
- Route the cord through the entry. Ensure the grommet sits evenly around the SO cord and that the external grip or clamp bears on the intended jacket area, not on exposed conductors.
- Connect the conductors. Place each conductor in its designated termination and keep strands fully captured. Use the same-plane hex-head access described by Legrand, with the specified tool.
- Apply the specified torque. Tighten each termination to the current model’s value and sequence. Record the result if your project quality plan requires torque documentation.
- Secure the cord clamp. Adjust the clamp evenly for the cord size and install the supplied longer screws when the model and cable require them. The clamp should restrain the jacket without crushing it.
- Close and inspect the housing. Confirm that the shell seats fully, no conductor is pinched, and the grommet and grips remain aligned. Recheck every fastener and the visible strain relief.
- Test before service. Perform the continuity, polarity, grounding and insulation checks required by the product instructions and project procedures before returning the assembly to service.
How this differs from ordinary wire connectors
It is easy to compare any item called a “connector,” but the electrical function is different. ABB’s official Marrette wire-connector page describes a range of twist-on, lever, push-in and specialty connectors for copper, aluminum and communication conductors, with certifications varying by product. Those devices join conductors inside an enclosure; the Legrand item is a 50A plug-and-connector family for temporary power. The categories should not be treated as interchangeable.

Where the design can help—and where it cannot
Potential advantages
- The 8 AWG–4 AWG clamp range can reduce the need to change clamp hardware when approved cord sizes vary within that range.
- Same-plane hex-head access can make tool alignment more straightforward in a crowded housing.
- External grips and the flexible grommet address cord support and entry protection as part of the device assembly.
- Brass alloy contacts and a nylon 66 shell provide the specified material construction described in the announcement.
Important limits
- No cited source quantifies installation speed, labor savings or improved failure rates.
- No exact model, voltage, certification or environmental rating is established for every product in the family.
- A correctly sized clamp cannot compensate for an incompatible cord, damaged housing, wrong mating device or incorrect termination.
- Temporary-power use still requires inspection, de-energization procedures and compliance with the applicable electrical rules.
Questions to ask a supplier or electrician
- Which exact Legrand catalog model matches the required voltage, pole configuration, grounding arrangement and 50A application?
- What cord outside-diameter range does that model accept in addition to the stated 8 AWG–4 AWG conductor range?
- Which mating plug, receptacle or connector is approved for the installation?
- What stripping dimensions, termination torque, tool type and tightening sequence are specified?
- What listing and environmental ratings apply to the selected model?
- Are replacement grommets, grips, screws or shells available, and how should damaged parts be handled?
Inspection and troubleshooting after installation
The cord pulls out or shifts
De-energize the assembly and inspect whether the clamp is bearing on the jacket, whether the cord size is within the model’s permitted range and whether the correct screws are installed. A clamp tightened against an undersized or damaged jacket may not provide reliable strain relief.
The housing will not close
Do not force it. Recheck conductor routing, jacket preparation, grommet seating and the position of the clamp. Pinched insulation or excess conductor length can indicate that the preparation dimensions do not match the current instructions.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A termination appears loose or damaged
Remove the assembly from service, isolate it and have a qualified person inspect the conductor and hardware. Retightening without checking for damaged strands, overheated parts or incorrect preparation can leave the underlying problem unresolved.
The plug and receptacle do not mate
Stop rather than modifying either device. Confirm the catalog numbers, voltage, pole arrangement and locking configuration. Similar amperage markings do not prove that two devices are compatible.
Bottom line for a construction project
Legrand’s 50A Turnlok family offers a coherent set of installation features for temporary-power connections: an adjustable 8 AWG–4 AWG external clamp, longer screws for larger cables, same-plane hex-head terminations, brass alloy contact parts, a nylon 66 shell, external cord grips and a flexible rubber grommet for SO cord. Those features make the family worth evaluating when secure, repeatable cord assembly matters. Select by exact model and mating configuration, follow the current installation instructions and electrical requirements, and treat the “faster, safer” language as a manufacturer claim rather than a measured performance guarantee.
