Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Start by identifying when the LED flickers. Flickering only while dimming usually points to bulb-and-dimmer compatibility or a dimmer’s low-end setting. Blinking while switched off often comes from leakage current in a smart or no-neutral switch. Random flicker while fully on may indicate a failing bulb, LED driver, loose connection, or power problem.
For a safe first test, set the light to full brightness, switch off power before reseating the bulb, and try a known-good LED that matches the fixture and dimmer. If several rooms flicker—or you notice heat, buzzing, a burning smell, sparks, discoloration, shocks, or breaker activity—stop troubleshooting and call a qualified electrician.

First, classify the flicker
| What you see | Most likely areas to investigate |
|---|---|
| Flickers only while dimming | Bulb-and-dimmer incompatibility or an unsuitable dimming mode |
| Flickers only at the lowest setting | Low-end dimming instability; the minimum level may be set too low |
| Blinks or glows while switched off | Leakage current from a smart or no-neutral switch |
| Randomly flickers while fully on | Defective bulb, socket, LED driver, wiring, or household power |
| Every bulb in one fixture flickers | Fixture driver, dimmer, wiring, or power supply |
| Several rooms flicker together | A circuit, service, loose-neutral, or utility problem |
| Flickers after warming up | Thermal stress or a failing integrated LED driver |
Flicker is a clue, not a diagnosis. It is not automatically dangerous, but it should not be ignored when it is widespread or accompanied by signs of overheating or electrical damage.

Safe five-minute checks
- Remove the control variable. If a dimmer is installed, set it to maximum brightness. If the light becomes stable, investigate the dimmer, bulb compatibility, or low-end trim.
- Turn the power off before touching the bulb. Let it cool, then remove and reinstall it without forcing it. If you will touch the socket or fixture, switch off the circuit breaker and do not proceed unless you can safely verify the circuit is de-energized.
- Inspect what is visible. Look for a damaged bulb base, corrosion, discoloration, heat damage, or a loose fixture. Do not reach into an energized fixture or tighten wiring while power is on.
- Try one known-good bulb. Use the same base and voltage, and match the fixture’s enclosed-fixture and damp- or wet-location requirements. If a dimmer is present, the replacement must be marked dimmable.
- Swap positions when possible. If only one of several identical bulbs flickers, move it to another compatible socket. If the flicker follows the bulb, replace the bulb. If it stays with the socket, suspect the socket, fixture, wiring, or control.
A single bulb that flickers in a known-good compatible socket may have a failing internal driver. “Premium” does not automatically mean flicker-free; verified compatibility with the particular dimmer and fixture matters more.

When the light is on a dimmer
LED dimming is a system problem involving the bulb, dimmer, wiring, load, and dimming range. A bulb labeled “dimmable” is not guaranteed to work smoothly with every dimmer.
Check both model numbers
Record the bulb’s exact model number, the dimmer’s exact model number, the number of bulbs, and the total LED wattage. Check the dimmer manufacturer’s compatibility tool rather than matching only by brand, shape, or wattage. Lutron’s compatibility guidance and Leviton’s LED compatibility guidance both emphasize that model-to-model behavior varies.
An older incandescent-only dimmer may not control an LED load correctly. An LED-rated dimmer can still flicker, buzz, shut off, or have a narrow usable range with a particular bulb.

- 【High Quality Material】 AUXLIGHT load resistors are made of super-high strength aluminum alloy, not easy to deform or break, ensuring maximum durability for long-term use.
- 【Pretty Easy to Wire Up】 Simple connect one wire to ground and the other wire to the positive, such as turn/brake wire. Each LED bulb requires one resistor connected in parellel (see picture for instruction).
- 【Warning】 Load Resistors heat up like halogen bulbs. They get really HOT when working. Must be mounted to Metal Surface, NOT plastic. Keep resistors inches away from any plastic parts.
If flicker occurs only at the bottom of the range
This strongly suggests low-end instability: the LED driver cannot maintain a steady output at the dimmer’s lowest setting. Depending on the model, the remedy may be to:
- Raise the minimum brightness;
- Adjust the dimmer’s low-end trim;
- Use a bulb listed as compatible;
- Use a different LED+ or universal dimmer; or
- Change the phase mode on a model that supports forward- or reverse-phase control.
Use the instructions for the exact dimmer. Button sequences are not universal. See the model-specific guidance for Lutron Maestro, Lutron Caséta, or Leviton Decora Smart controls.
Compatibility lists improve your odds but are not an absolute guarantee. Installation, line voltage, bulb quantity, fixture temperature, settings, and individual bulb variation can affect the result; even listed combinations may have some shimmer, buzz, or reduced range.

Why an LED blinks when switched off
A faint pulse or glow while the switch is off is different from a light going dark while it is on. Some smart switches and no-neutral dimmers pass a small leakage current through the load to power their electronics. Certain LED drivers respond by glowing, pulsing, or blinking. This is often called ghosting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPossible solutions include using a bulb tested for that switch, installing the switch manufacturer’s approved bypass or load-compensation accessory, using a compatible neutral-connected control, or replacing the dimmer with a suitable on/off switch. Do not install a generic capacitor or bypass: use only an accessory approved for the specific switch, load, and wiring arrangement. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for Caséta ghosting and blinking.
Some smart dimmers require a neutral; others are designed to operate without one but have tighter compatibility limits. Never improvise a neutral connection or infer wiring from wire color alone. Identify the exact switch model and follow its installation documentation, such as Leviton’s installation guidance.

Integrated LED fixtures and low-voltage lights
If there is no replaceable bulb, the fixture may contain an LED module and driver. Repeating pulses, flicker that begins after warming up, buzzing, or intermittent shutdown can indicate driver failure. Check the fixture warranty before attempting repair; the correct replacement may be a driver, LED module, or complete fixture.
Do not treat 12- or 24-volt lighting as interchangeable with ordinary line-voltage bulbs. The transformer or electronic driver and the dimmer’s phase type must match. Low-voltage installations can have different neutral and forward- or reverse-phase requirements; consult the fixture and control manufacturer or an electrician.
If a smart bulb is connected to a conventional wall dimmer, remove that arrangement from consideration. Smart bulbs generally need uninterrupted full power and should be controlled through their app or a compatible smart switch unless the manufacturer explicitly supports dimming another way.

When flickering means call an electrician
Stop DIY troubleshooting and contact a qualified electrician if:
- Several rooms or circuits flicker together;
- Lights brighten and dim when a large appliance starts;
- You hear buzzing, crackling, or arcing;
- A switch, outlet, bulb, or fixture feels hot;
- There is a burning odor, discoloration, visible sparking, or a shock;
- A breaker trips or a fuse blows;
- The problem began after electrical work;
- You suspect a loose connection in a wall box, ceiling junction, panel, or service;
- An integrated fixture’s driver may need replacement; or
- You cannot positively identify the wiring or verify that power is off.
If the issue coincides with utility work or affects neighboring homes, contact the electric utility as well. A phone camera can reveal LED modulation that is difficult to see, but it does not measure health risk or prove that a product is unsafe.
Diagnosis at a glance
| Observation | First action | Likely solution |
|---|---|---|
| One replaceable bulb flickers everywhere | Test or replace the bulb | A new compatible bulb |
| Several bulbs flicker with one dimmer | Check exact bulb-and-dimmer compatibility | Compatible bulbs or an LED-rated dimmer |
| Flicker occurs only at minimum brightness | Raise low-end trim | Trim adjustment, a different bulb, or a different dimmer |
| Light pulses while switched off | Check the smart/no-neutral setup | Approved load device, compatible bulb, or suitable neutral-connected control |
| Integrated fixture flickers | Check warranty and driver information | Driver, module, or fixture replacement |
| Several rooms flicker | Stop DIY diagnosis | Electrician and possibly utility investigation |
| Flicker includes heat, odor, buzzing, or sparks | Turn the circuit off if safe | Qualified electrician immediately |
What to buy—and what not to assume
Replace a bulb first when only one replaceable bulb flickers. Choose the correct base, voltage, brightness, color temperature, enclosure rating, location rating, and dimmable designation. For a multi-bulb fixture, using the same model during diagnosis avoids differences between LED drivers.
Replace a dimmer only after the symptom points to dimming and you have checked the bulb, load, wiring requirements, and compatibility list. A conventional LED+ dimmer may suit a simple compatible installation; a smart dimmer adds app and voice control but also introduces wiring, neutral, firmware, and leakage-current considerations. No dimmer is universally flicker-free.
For example, the Lutron Diva LED+ DVSCCL-153P-RW is listed for compatible dimmable LED loads up to 150 watts, while the Lutron Diva Smart Caséta DVRF-6L-IV is a no-neutral smart dimmer listed for up to 150 watts of LED load. The Leviton D2ELV-1BW is a smart LED/electronic-low-voltage control whose listing specifies a neutral connection. These are examples, not universal recommendations; prices and availability change, and the exact bulb, fixture, wiring, and control must match.
If the lights do not need dimming, a compatible on/off switch can remove the dimming variable—but only when its wiring and load requirements fit the installation. If you are not comfortable identifying line, load, neutral, and ground conductors, hire an electrician.
