There isn’t enough comparable, independent testing in the available evidence to name five laundry detergent tablets—or rank them by stain removal. The most specific tablet test available is published by Blueland about its own product. It offers a useful example, but it is not an independent head-to-head review. Here’s what that test establishes, how to assess a tablet, and what other detergent-format tests can—and cannot—tell you.
Which laundry detergent tablets remove stains best?
The evidence does not establish a best tablet or support a top-five ranking. Consumer testing sources discuss detergent performance and other formats, but do not provide comparable, independent results for five tablet products. Blueland publishes product-specific results for its Laundry Tablets against anonymized detergents; those results should be read as the manufacturer’s account, not an independent verdict.
That distinction matters because detergents can perform differently on different stains. A result on one stain, or a single overall claim, does not show that a product is best for every laundry load. Consumer Reports describes testing stained fabric swatches and substantial differences among detergents and formats, but its available material does not provide a tablet-versus-tablet ranking. Consumer Reports’ 2026 detergent results are useful context, not evidence for five tablet reviews.
What Blueland’s tablet test says
Blueland describes its Laundry Tablets as dry, concentrated tablets intended to go directly into the washer drum before the cycle. Its product page also describes packaging without individual PVA wrapping, compostable shipping packaging, and a reusable tin-coated steel container. Packaging and use instructions can change, so check the current product information before buying. Blueland Laundry Tablets

How the company compared products
In a test published by Blueland and written by its Head of Product Development & Innovation, the company compared its tablet with three unnamed laundry pacs and two unnamed liquid detergents. For each stain and brand, it used three swatches, one tablet or pac—or 1.5 ounces of liquid detergent—and additional clean fabric to represent a full load. It tested tablets, pacs, and liquids in cold water, and tablets and pacs in warm water.
Blueland measured delta E, a color difference between stained fabric before and after washing. The company says a higher delta E indicates more stain removal. The published comparison covers rice, a blood mixture, chocolate ice cream, pizza sauce, yogurt and berries, egg, grass, liquid makeup, dust sebum, and coffee. Its data show variation by stain, so a favorable result on one stain should not be treated as a universal performance ranking.

How to interpret the headline result
Blueland says its tablet outperformed one major brand on eight of the ten stains tested in a cold-water wash. That is the manufacturer’s reported result; the comparison products are not named, and it is not an independent finding. Read the underlying stain-by-stain results and test conditions rather than interpreting that statement as proof the tablet beats other products generally. Blueland’s test description and results
How to choose a tablet for your laundry
Start with the stains and washing conditions you actually face, then compare product instructions and practical trade-offs. Consumer NZ identifies stain removal, environmental impact, skin sensitivity, washer compatibility, price, and wash conditions as relevant considerations in choosing detergent. Its testing covers ten common stains and cold- and warm-wash performance. Consumer NZ’s laundry detergent overview

- Stain mix: Look for test results across several stains, not just a broad “stain-fighting” claim or a single stain result.
- Wash temperature: Check whether the product’s evidence covers cold water, warm water, or both. Do not assume results transfer between conditions.
- Load and dose: Follow the product’s dose and load directions. A fixed-dose tablet may be less flexible than a detergent whose amount can be adjusted.
- Washer and garment directions: Use the detergent placement specified by its manufacturer and follow the garment care label. Do not assume every format belongs in the detergent drawer.
- Sensitivity and environmental priorities: Check current ingredients, fragrance information, and packaging details against your needs; a format alone does not establish those qualities.
- Cost per wash: Compare the current price with the number of washes the package says it covers, using the dose that matches your load. The evidence here does not establish current prices for a five-tablet comparison.
What testing of other detergent formats can tell you
Other-format results provide context about convenience and dosing, but they do not establish how tablets perform. In its July 2024 guidance, Consumer NZ reported that capsules performed best on average in its testing and were its third-highest tested product, while tested sheets performed poorly. Those are Consumer NZ findings about its tested products and formats—not a tablet ranking.
Consumer NZ also notes that capsules are premeasured and convenient, but a fixed dose can be less suitable for small loads because it cannot be adjusted. That trade-off is relevant when considering any premeasured format, but the capsule finding should not be transferred to tablets. Consumer NZ’s detergent-format guidance, 8 July 2024

How to use a tablet safely and as intended
- Read the current detergent instructions and garment care label before loading the washer.
- Check the specified tablet dose and whether the product gives load-size or soil-level directions.
- Place the tablet where its manufacturer directs. Blueland says to put its tablet directly in the drum, then run the desired cycle.
- Select the cycle and water temperature appropriate for the clothing and the detergent instructions.
Placement directions are product-specific. For example, Seventh Generation directs users to put its laundry sheets in an empty washer drum before adding laundry, and its sheet dose varies with load size and soil level; that is sheet guidance, not a tablet recommendation. Why this is not a top-five review
A useful ranked review needs product-specific results collected under comparable conditions. The available evidence does not provide independent, comparable stain-test results for five current tablet products. Filling five slots with capsules, sheets, liquids, or products without supporting test evidence would create a misleading list, not answer which tablets remove stains best.

For now, the responsible comparison is narrower: Blueland is a named tablet example with manufacturer-published testing, while independent consumer sources help explain how detergent performance is assessed and what trade-offs other formats can involve. That evidence can guide what to look for, but it cannot settle which five tablets are best.
