To build a large chicken coop, size the enclosed house for how long birds may be confined, then plan the run, ventilation, roosts, nests, drainage, and predator barriers around your flock and site. Extension guidance ranges from at least 3 square feet of coop floor per bird when birds have outdoor access to 8–10 square feet when they do not. Those are planning recommendations, not a universal building standard or a complete engineered plan.

Start with the flock and its access to the outdoors

Count the birds the coop must hold and decide whether they will have daily access to a run or may be confined for long periods. Oregon State University Extension recommends at least 3 square feet of coop floor per bird when birds have access to a run or outdoor area, and 8–10 square feet per bird without outdoor access. Its figures are guidance, not a guarantee that one area will suit every breed or situation. See Oregon State’s backyard coop design guidance.

University of Delaware Cooperative Extension gives a different planning figure: 2–3 square feet inside and 8–10 square feet in an outdoor run per bird. Because recommendations vary by source and assumptions, choose a stated basis rather than combining the figures into a single supposed standard. Delaware’s guidance is in its May 2025 chicken housing and maintenance fact sheet.

Planning scenario Enclosed coop area Outdoor run area Source and qualification
Birds have access to a run or outdoor area At least 3 sq. ft. per bird Plan separately Oregon State University Extension; publication dated 2014, reviewed 2023
Birds lack outdoor access 8–10 sq. ft. per bird Not applicable to this scenario Oregon State University Extension; publication dated 2014, reviewed 2023
Separate house and run areas 2–3 sq. ft. per bird 8–10 sq. ft. per bird University of Delaware Cooperative Extension; May 2025

Multiply the per-bird area by your planned flock size to get a starting floor-area target. For example, 20 birds with outdoor access would require at least 60 square feet using Oregon State’s recommendation; using Delaware’s figures would yield 40–60 square feet inside and 160–200 square feet in the run. These are arithmetic applications of each source’s guidance, not tested plans.

Choose a site before drawing the footprint

Set the coop on high, well-drained ground so rain does not leave the floor or run muddy. Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends a high, well-drained site and discusses openings that can be opened for ventilation. Penn State Extension likewise emphasizes dry, draft-free housing and well-drained ground. Their advice is general: it is not a site survey or a substitute for checking local conditions.

  • Consider prevailing wind and rainfall when placing doors, windows, and vents.
  • Allow shade during hot weather and some sun to help the site dry.
  • Leave enough access for carrying bedding, collecting eggs, and cleaning.
  • Check local zoning, setbacks, permits, poultry rules, and any limits on coop placement before construction.

Lay out the shell for access, airflow, and cleaning

Draw the human access door, bird door, windows, and ventilation openings before settling the wall and roof layout. A large coop needs a door or removable panel that lets you reach the floor and interior fixtures without awkwardly working through a small hatch. Plan a bird entrance that can be shut reliably at night, and protect windows and vents so they do not become predator entry points.

Extension materials mention wood, plastic, and concrete as possible coop materials, but do not establish one as best for every climate or provide a structural design for a large coop. Select materials and framing appropriate to local weather and code requirements. The available guidance is not a dimensioned plan, cut list, or structural specification.

Ventilate without exposing roosting birds to drafts

Ventilation removes moisture and gases such as ammonia. Openable windows, wall openings, and roof or gable vents are options; position openings so air can move through the coop while sleeping birds are not directly in the path of a cold draft. Oregon State Extension describes passive ventilation as adequate for most backyard coops. In hot or humid periods, a fan may help, but Oregon State advises against directing its airflow onto birds.

Secure vents and other openings against predators and wild birds. Make windows or vents closable or otherwise weather-protected where needed, without sealing the coop so tightly that moisture and air quality become problems. Climate, prevailing wind, and exposure determine the appropriate arrangement; general extension guidance cannot specify a universal vent size for your building.

Fit roosts and nest boxes to the flock

Oregon State Extension suggests 5–10 inches of roost pole per bird and about one nest box per four birds. The University of Connecticut Extension response gives a similar planning range of 6–10 inches of roost space and communal nesting space for four to five hens. Treat these as starting points, not exact requirements for every breed or flock.

Oregon State describes roosts made from 1–2 inch square lumber with rounded top edges, generally about 2 feet above the floor, with 10 inches between poles. It also notes breed-specific exceptions. Choose a height and arrangement that suit the birds and let you reach the nests to collect eggs. The guidance is available in Oregon State’s coop design publication and the University of Connecticut Extension Ask Extension response of May 15, 2023.

Build the run as part of the predator barrier

A run is not secure merely because its sides have wire. Plan for predators that climb, fly, or dig: use a covered top, protect the perimeter, and close birds into the coop at night. Oregon State recommends 1-by-2-inch mesh and burying the fencing 6 inches to 1 foot. University of Connecticut Extension describes a distinct approach: bury fencing 12–18 inches, with a 6–8 inch outward-facing L- or J-shaped apron. These are source-specific recommendations, not interchangeable specifications or a guarantee against every local predator.

For the run, galvanized welded wire mesh is a relevant material category, not a particular product recommendation. Match the openings and strength to local predators and the construction plan; no brand, gauge, roll size, price, or product test is established by the cited guidance. Inspect gates and joins as part of the barrier, and ensure the run can be closed consistently.

Turn the decisions into a build-ready drawing

  1. Write down the flock and access assumption. Record the maximum bird count and whether birds have outdoor access or may be confined, then calculate coop floor area using one source’s stated scenario.
  2. Mark the site constraints. Note drainage, prevailing wind, rain exposure, shade, sun, cleaning access, and local zoning or permit requirements.
  3. Sketch the footprint and openings. Show the human door, bird door, windows, high ventilation openings, and the route to reach every part of the floor and fixtures.
  4. Place roosts and nests. Use the selected flock-size guidance for capacity, then adapt heights and spacing to the birds and convenient egg collection.
  5. Draw the run and its perimeter protection. Specify mesh, covered top, gate closure, and the buried edge or apron approach appropriate to local digging predators.
  6. Resolve structure and weatherproofing locally. Confirm framing, roof, fasteners, snow and wind loads, and code compliance for the site; the cited poultry guidance does not supply these structural specifications.
  7. Check cleanability before building. Make sure a person can remove soiled bedding and reach corners, roosts, nests, doors, and protected openings.

NC State Extension has a sample garden-coop reference described as suitable for four or five hens, with an attached run extending at least 6 feet. It is not a large-flock plan, and its publication date is not established here. Use it only as a small-coop reference, not as a scaled structural drawing for a larger build: Keeping Garden Chickens in North Carolina.

What these recommendations do—and do not—establish

The cited Extension figures are planning recommendations drawn from different publications and contexts, not a unified code standard. They do not establish that a design meets building code, is structurally adequate, or fits every breed, climate, or predator. Before building, check local rules and conditions, including setbacks, permits, snow and wind loads, drainage, and the predators in your area. For a large coop, obtain appropriate structural guidance for the actual site and materials rather than treating a general poultry layout as an engineered plan.
