Thailand’s Cabinet approved 1,783 million baht in financial assistance for the planned Chiangman–Luang Prabang Mekong Bridge on 8 September 2026. A site visit by Thailand’s deputy prime minister during a bilateral meeting in Luang Prabang on 2 October added a high-level sign of progress. These milestones move the project toward implementation, but the available official updates do not establish a construction start date, contractor award or opening schedule.
What has happened so far?
- October 2024: Thailand’s Neighbouring Countries Economic Development Cooperation Agency (NEDA) published a fact sheet describing completed feasibility and detailed-design work for the bridge and connecting roads. The Lao Department of Roads is identified as the executing agency. NEDA project fact sheet

- 2 October 2026: Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow visited the project site during the 23rd Thai-Lao Joint Commission meeting in Luang Prabang. The meeting, co-chaired with Laos’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane, also covered logistics connectivity, trade and tourism. Where is the bridge planned, and what will it connect?
The proposed crossing is between Ban Xieng Maen in Chomphet District and Luang Prabang. Its purpose is to improve connections between Thailand’s Nan Province and Luang Prabang, linking with the Hongsa–Chiangman road on the Lao side and National Road 13. The project is near Luang Prabang’s UNESCO World Heritage site; NEDA says the selected route is intended to limit effects on heritage sites and residential areas. What design and length are reported?
The published figures differ, so they should be read with their source and date rather than treated as a settled single specification.

The discrepancy may reflect different descriptions or project scope, but the cited updates do not explain it. The 820-metre figure belongs to NEDA’s 2024 design fact sheet; the roughly 500-metre figure is KPL’s 2026 financing report. Neither should be presented without attribution as the final as-built length.

What does the approved funding cover?
The 1,783 million baht approved by Thailand’s Cabinet is financial assistance to Laos, not a stated construction contract price. KPL reports that 50% is to come from Thai government budgets for fiscal years 2028–2031. The remaining half is to be borrowed by NEDA from domestic financial institutions and on-lent to Laos. KPL also reports conditions requiring Thai contractors and consulting engineers to participate, and Thai-produced construction materials to make up at least 50% of contract value. That assistance figure is distinct from NEDA’s October 2024 estimated project cost of 1.735 billion baht excluding VAT. NEDA’s estimate included construction, contingency and supervision; it is an earlier design-stage cost estimate, not the later Cabinet-approved assistance amount or a confirmed contract award. What benefits are projected, and what is still uncertain?
NEDA’s 2024 fact sheet projected 80,000 additional Thai tourists per year and 360 million baht in annual tourism revenue during the first five years. Those are forecasts, not measured results. The fact sheet also says the environmental assessment found moderate impacts and that Laos’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment had approved mitigation measures; this describes the 2024 project document, not a new independent assessment. The milestones establish design work and a financing approval, followed by a ministerial site visit. They do not establish that construction has formally started, that a contractor has been awarded the work, or when the bridge will open. No opening schedule is stated in the cited updates.
