Construction on the rebuild of Lahaina Residential, a 60-home community at 1034 Front Street, is expected to begin October 19, 2026, according to the project’s general contractor. The October 2 groundbreaking marked a step toward restoring homes destroyed in the August 2023 wildfire; the contractor estimates the work will take about 18 months.
What is being rebuilt
Lahaina Residential is a rebuild of an existing community, not a newly proposed apartment development. All 60 homes were destroyed in the August 2023 wildfire. The plan restores six two-story buildings to their original size and layout.
The schedule is a reported expectation, not confirmation that work began on October 19 or a guaranteed completion date. The estimate of about 18 months is the contractor’s projected construction duration.
How the design addresses fire and water
The rebuild is planned with upgrades intended to improve resilience while retaining the community’s prior scale and layout. Reported features include:

Historic-district context
The property sits within the Lahaina Historic District, next to the historic U.S. Marine Hospital, also known as Seaman’s Hospital. The project team worked with county historic representatives on materials and design elements intended to complement the hospital and the Front Street view corridor.
The named project team includes general contractor Arita Poulson General Contracting, Michael Wright & Associates Inc., Kasprzycki Designs, Martin & Martin, and Island Geotechnical and Scientific Consultant Services Inc.

Residents and Lahaina’s recovery
The rebuilding effort is closely tied to residents returning to their homes and to the local workforce. Thomas Ravey, president of the Association of Apartment Owners of Lahaina Residential and a longtime homeowner, described the community as a mix of people who live and work in Lahaina, including teachers, firefighters, tradespeople, and service workers.
Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen attended the October 2 groundbreaking with Council Member Yuki Lei Sugimura. Bissen said, “Housing is the foundation of our recovery.” Arita Poulson General Contracting controller Shannon Robinson said, “Our work will be guided by a deep respect for this place and the people who have been waiting to come home.”
What the schedule does—and does not—establish
The October 19, 2026 start date and roughly 18-month duration are the contractor’s reported schedule, as covered by Maui Now on October 3, 2026. They describe the plan at the time of reporting; they do not establish that construction has started or when the homes will be ready for residents. The reporting also does not establish rental availability, rents, or an application process.
