The multicolored Asian lady beetle is a kind of lady beetle, so “ladybug” and “Asian lady beetle” are not opposing taxonomic groups. Indoors, the clearest clue is often a dark W- or M-shaped mark on the pale area just behind the head. Color and spots vary too much to identify one by themselves.
Are ladybugs and Asian lady beetles different?
“Ladybug,” “lady beetle,” and “ladybird beetle” are common names for members of the beetle family Coccinellidae. The multicolored Asian lady beetle (Harmonia axyridis) belongs to that family too. “Asian ladybug” is sometimes used colloquially, but it does not describe a separate group. Penn State Extension recommends “lady beetle” as the less confusing general term: Penn State Extension’s overview.

How to identify an Asian lady beetle
Look for a W- or M-shaped mark
Check the pale area immediately behind the head, called the pronotum. A dark marking there often resembles a W or M and is considered a useful identifying clue. It is not an infallible field test, so weigh it with the beetle’s overall appearance and the circumstances of the sighting. Cornell identifies this marking as the best indicator: Cornell’s identification guidance.

Do not rely on color or spot count
Asian lady beetles can be pale yellowish or tan, orange, or red. Some have many spots, others few, faint spots, or none that are visible. A red beetle is not necessarily a different kind of ladybug, and the number of spots alone is not a dependable identification.

Consider shape and size, but allow for variation
Cornell describes the beetle as more oval than round and up to 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) long. Penn State gives an adult length of 9/32 inch (7 mm) and width of 7/32 inch (5.5 mm). These are source-specific descriptions, not a single measurement that every individual will match.
Why they gather inside buildings
Outdoors, multicolored Asian lady beetles are beneficial predators that feed on aphids and other small, soft-bodied pests. In fall, they may gather on buildings and enter through openings while seeking sheltered places to overwinter. On warmer days, they can become noticeable on interior walls or around windows as they move toward light or try to get back outside.

The calendar depends on weather and location. Iowa State describes flight commonly from mid-September through October in its regional guidance; that schedule should not be treated as universal. Virginia guidance describes fall entry and a later spring activity peak: Virginia Cooperative Extension’s guidance.

Finding beetles indoors usually does not mean they have established a breeding infestation. Extension sources say they do not reproduce inside or feed on wood, fabrics, food, or other household materials. They are not structural pests. Possible entry points include cracks and gaps, windows, doors, eaves, vents, and other openings; a sighting does not establish which route they used. See University of Maryland Extension’s overview and Illinois Extension’s guidance.

What indoor beetles mean for health and comfort
When crushed or handled roughly, these beetles can release defensive secretions that smell and may stain walls or fabric yellow-orange. Avoid crushing them during cleanup. Cornell notes that sensitive people may have allergy problems when large numbers are indoors. Illinois Extension reports possible itchy eyes and nose, asthma, or welts, and says a beetle may bite if trapped under clothing or handled; reported discomfort is minor. Cornell says they do not carry diseases. These reports describe possible reactions, not a reason to treat an ordinary sighting as a severe hazard.

Before seasonal arrival: close likely entry points
Seal cracks and gaps around windows, doors, siding, eaves, exterior faucets, and vents. Keep screens in good repair and consider door sweeps. Cornell characterizes exclusion as the safest and most effective way to reduce or prevent entry, though sealing may not work completely in every building. Cornell’s prevention recommendations focus on those home-maintenance measures.

Once they are inside: vacuum or sweep them up
Vacuuming or sweeping is a practical way to remove clusters without crushing the beetles. Penn State describes vacuuming as an efficient removal method and provides disposal suggestions for bagged and bagless vacuums; follow the instructions for your appliance. Cornell cautions that shop-vacs may retain odor in the hose. Penn State’s removal guidance and Cornell’s guidance describe these approaches.

Do not make indoor pesticide spraying the default
Iowa State says indoor sprays have very limited benefit. Illinois Extension generally advises against indoor pesticide use because beetles may be in inaccessible spaces and treatment can expose occupants unnecessarily. Some regional sources discuss carefully timed exterior treatments in specific circumstances, but timing, location, product labeling, and local guidance matter. Do not choose or apply a pesticide without checking its current label and local authority guidance. See Iowa State Extension’s guidance and Illinois Extension’s guidance.
