Lacewood is a trade name for several woods, not one reliably defined species. It is best known for the lace-like flecks formed by its medullary rays, especially visible on quartersawn surfaces. Because identity and properties vary, look for the botanical species on a supplier’s listing and treat the wood primarily as a decorative interior material.
What does “lacewood” mean?
The name has been used for different woods in different periods and markets, including plane or sycamore, Australian Cardwellia and Grevillea, and South American woods. A current supplier listing, for example, identifies Panopsis spp. from tropical South America as lacewood. These usages should not be collapsed into one botanical identity. Robert J. Settich, a Woodcraft contributing writer, describes the naming problem this way: “Sorting out the genuine article is a trying task because the lacewood name serves more as a marketing alias than a description of a single species.”
When species is available, use it alongside the trade name. A listing that says only “lacewood” may not tell you enough to infer its appearance, strength, or durability.
How to recognize lacewood’s figure
The distinctive pattern comes from prominent medullary rays: the rays show as flecks across the wood’s surface. The figure is especially conspicuous in quartersawn stock. One supplier describes its Panopsis spp. lacewood as pale pinkish brown, with medium-to-coarse texture and straight-to-wavy grain; other woods sold under the same name may look different.

Lacewood and leopardwood: what is the difference?
The names are often confused, but the woods are distinct. A woodworking comparison describes leopardwood as darker and denser, with rounder, splashier flecks. Lacewood is generally lighter, with wispy flecks that taper at both ends. These visual traits are useful clues, not proof of species: check the botanical name where the seller provides it.
What is lacewood used for?
Lacewood is chiefly chosen for decorative interior work, where its figure can be a prominent design feature. Documented uses include:

Consider the scale of the piece before choosing a board. A dramatic fleck pattern can dominate a small object; select stock for a figure and color that suit the project and are reasonably consistent across the boards you need.
What properties should you expect?
There is no single set of physical-property values for all wood sold as lacewood. One supplier’s listing for Panopsis spp. reports the following figures; its page does not display a publication year:

How does lacewood work, and what are its limitations?
Woodworking coverage reports that lacewood can be crosscut, ripped, and edge-routed cleanly, but the large ray flecks can tear out during planing. Sharp cutters and fine cuts may help; sanding is another option for thicknessing. Some people may experience skin or eye reactions to lacewood dust, so use appropriate dust-control and protective practices for your shop and follow the guidance for your equipment.

Durability also depends on identity, but the available descriptions caution against treating lacewood as an outdoor wood. Woodcraft describes it as not resistant to rot or insects outdoors; a supplier’s Panopsis spp. listing calls that wood non-durable and susceptible to termite damage. Unless you have species-specific evidence supporting an exterior application, keep lacewood to interior or decorative uses.

For a construction or woodworking project, compare the actual stock rather than relying on the trade name alone. A supplier may offer board stock in different dimensions, but availability is listing-specific.

Searching for “lacewood lumber board” is a reasonable way to find stock, but the phrase alone does not establish species or current inventory. Check the seller’s product details and make sure the pictured figure represents the material being offered.
