Kwikset’s Halo Select is a touchscreen residential deadbolt with built-in Wi-Fi and Matter-over-Thread connectivity. It offers remote locking and unlocking, up to 250 access codes, guest access, door-status monitoring and compatibility listings for Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings.
The important catch is that its two connection modes are not interchangeable: Wi-Fi operation does not require a separate Kwikset hub, while Matter mode requires a compatible Matter controller with Thread support. The standard Halo Select also should not be confused with the Halo Select Plus, which adds Apple Home Key.

What is the Kwikset Halo Select?
Halo Select is a motorized touchscreen deadbolt for residential doors. It is keyed on the exterior side, so it is not a completely keyless lock, and Kwikset lists two physical keys with the product. The lock runs on four AA batteries and is designed to work either through the Kwikset app over Wi-Fi or as a Matter device using Thread.
Kwikset announced Halo Select on October 21, 2024, with a launch MSRP of $279 and planned availability around mid-November 2024. That is the dated launch price, not a confirmed current retail price. The lock is listed in finishes including Satin Nickel and Matte Black, with standard, contemporary and soft-modern exterior styles available across the range.

Wi-Fi and Matter: the distinction that matters
“Matter-enabled” does not mean Halo Select connects directly to any phone or ordinary Wi-Fi router. Matter is the smart-home application standard, while this lock uses Matter over Thread for its Matter connection. Thread requires compatible smart-home controller hardware and Thread border-router capability.
| Kwikset Wi-Fi mode | Matter-over-Thread mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Built-in Wi-Fi | Thread |
| Additional hardware | No separate Kwikset hub required | Compatible Matter controller with Thread support required |
| Setup | Kwikset app | Start conversion in the Kwikset app, then add it to the chosen Matter platform |
| Remote control | Through the Kwikset app and supported integrations | Depends on the Matter controller and smart-home platform |
| Native Kwikset features | Best documented in this mode | Kwikset does not fully document feature-by-feature parity in the available materials |
Kwikset’s “no hub required” wording applies to built-in Wi-Fi operation. It should not be read as meaning that Matter-over-Thread works without a controller or Thread border router.

How to set up Matter mode
Kwikset’s documented process begins in its own app rather than entirely in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings:
- Make sure the home has a compatible Matter smart-home hub or controller with Thread support.
- Open the Kwikset app.
- Go to Lock Settings.
- Tap Matter Integration.
- Follow the conversion instructions.
- After conversion, the lock enters Matter pairing mode and broadcasts over Thread.
- Scan the Matter QR code in the desired smart-home application and complete pairing.
Kwikset says Matter pairing mode ends after 15 minutes of inactivity. If pairing fails, return to Kwikset app → Lock Settings → Matter Integration, re-enter pairing mode and scan the code again before the window expires.

Switching between operating modes is more involved than simply enabling another cloud service. Matter troubleshooting can involve the lock, Kwikset app, controller, Thread border router and smart-home platform.
Features in native Wi-Fi operation
Kwikset associates the following functions with Halo Select and its native app:
Recommended Free Tools
- Remote locking and unlocking.
- Temporary, scheduled and permanent access codes.
- Up to 250 access codes.
- Guest-access management.
- Event history.
- Door and lock status.
- Invalid-code and tamper notifications.
- Geofencing and auto-unlock.
- Voice and smart-home control through supported ecosystems.
These are the clearest documented capabilities in Wi-Fi mode. A compatibility listing for a Matter platform does not prove that every Kwikset function—particularly code administration, geofencing, event history and alerts—remains identical after conversion. Buyers who depend on those features should verify how their chosen platform exposes them.
Door-status sensing is more useful than it sounds
Halo Select includes a slim magnet-based sensor intended to indicate whether the door is actually closed. That is different from knowing whether the deadbolt motor has moved into the locked position.
A door can be reported as locked while it is not fully seated, the strike is misaligned or the bolt is binding. Door-status sensing can help identify a door left ajar and can support notifications or automations. Correct sensor placement and calibration are important, however. “Locked” and “door closed” should be treated as separate pieces of information.

Compatibility and installation
Standard Halo Select specifications list a keyed deadbolt, an adjustable latch backset, a 21⁄8-inch cross bore and compatibility with doors approximately 13⁄8 to 13⁄4 inches thick. Four AA batteries are included. The interior turn piece is listed as ADA compliant.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteKwikset markets installation as a screwdriver-only DIY project with an interactive in-app guide. That can be realistic for a correctly prepared door, but the lock’s motor cannot compensate for a badly aligned door. Before installing, check:
- Door thickness and the exact product variant.
- A 21⁄8-inch cross bore and the required edge preparation.
- Adjustable backset compatibility.
- Whether the existing deadbolt extends and retracts smoothly by hand.
- Whether the door closes fully without pushing, lifting or forcing it.
- Strike-plate alignment and screw attachment into sound framing.
- Clearance for the interior battery compartment and turn piece.
If the old deadbolt binds, correct the door, hinges, strike or frame before fitting a motorized lock. Binding increases noise, reduces reliability and may contribute to faster battery drain.
Battery life and backup planning
Kwikset’s sell sheet estimates approximately six months from four AA alkaline batteries and approximately nine months from its optional rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed runtimes. Actual life can vary with Wi-Fi activity, motor use, temperature, network conditions, geofencing, battery quality and door alignment.
The rechargeable pack is sold separately according to Kwikset’s announcement and sell-sheet materials. Keep the physical keys available, monitor low-battery alerts and replace all four AA batteries together. Rapid drain should also prompt an alignment and bolt-resistance check rather than an automatic assumption that the batteries are defective.

Security claims in context
Kwikset says Halo Select meets BHMA Grade AAA standards, carries a UL 20-minute fire rating and uses 128-bit encryption, according to its product and sell-sheet materials. It also promotes SecureScreen touchscreen protection, invalid-code alerts, tamper notifications and door-status sensing.
These claims describe different things. BHMA Grade AAA is a performance classification, not a promise that the lock cannot be defeated. A UL 20-minute rating concerns fire-door performance under applicable test conditions, not general burglary resistance. Encryption and alerts address electronic communication and notification, while the physical security of the door still depends on the lock, strike, screws, frame, hinges and surrounding construction.
SecureScreen and tamper alerts may reduce casual code observation or provide useful warnings, but electronic notifications do not physically prevent every attack. A strong installation remains essential.
Halo Select versus Halo Select Plus
| Feature | Halo Select | Halo Select Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in Wi-Fi | Yes | Yes |
| Matter over Thread | Yes | Yes |
| Access codes | Up to 250 | Up to 250 |
| Apple Home Key | Not established for the standard model | Yes |
| iPhone or Apple Watch tap-to-unlock | No documented support | Yes, through NFC/Home Key |
| Listed door thickness | Approximately 13⁄8–13⁄4 inches | Approximately 13⁄4–2 inches on the retrieved product page |
Choose Halo Select Plus if tapping an iPhone or Apple Watch is a deciding feature. Do not assume that the standard Halo Select supports Apple Home Key simply because it is listed as compatible with Apple Home.
An important SmartKey discrepancy
Kwikset’s current standard Halo Select product pages list SmartKey: No, while the Halo Select sell sheet mentions SmartKey Security and self-rekeying. The current Halo Select Plus page explicitly lists SmartKey as supported.

Because those official materials conflict, do not assume that a standard Halo Select can be re-keyed with SmartKey. Confirm the exact SKU and cylinder configuration with Kwikset or the retailer before buying if re-keying is important.
Who should buy Halo Select?
Halo Select is a strong fit for a homeowner who wants keypad entry, remote access, guest codes, door-status monitoring and broad smart-home compatibility without buying a proprietary hub for Wi-Fi operation. Its 250-code capacity is useful for larger households, service access or short-term guest management.
It is also a sensible Matter option for someone who already has the correct Thread-capable controller. Matter-first buyers should be comfortable with the documented conversion process and with the fact that Kwikset does not fully enumerate native-feature parity in Matter mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose Halo Select Plus instead when Apple Home Key is the priority. Consider another lock when the door falls outside the listed dimensions, the existing deadbolt or frame is poorly aligned, a completely keyless exterior is required, or the buyer expects Matter setup to work without controller hardware.
Alternatives
Schlage Encode Plus is the closest prominent alternative for Apple users who prioritize Home Key. Schlage lists built-in Wi-Fi, Apple Home Key, Matter and Thread indicators, with up to 100 access codes on its detailed product listing and a displayed MSRP of $329. Retail prices are volatile.
Schlage Encode is another built-in-Wi-Fi option with remote control and guest codes, but it should not be treated as equivalent to Halo Select’s Matter-over-Thread feature set without checking the exact current SKU.
Bottom line
Halo Select’s appeal is its combination of a keypad deadbolt, built-in Wi-Fi, Matter-over-Thread support, 250 access codes and door-status sensing. The buying decision turns on two qualifications: Matter mode requires compatible Thread/Matter controller hardware, and the standard model is not the one to choose for Apple Home Key. For the simplest setup, use native Kwikset Wi-Fi mode; for integrated Matter control, verify the controller, platform and feature requirements before installation.
