Yes—but not for every Matter bulb. iOS 18 betas introduced Apple Home support for Adaptive Lighting on selected Matter lights, with Nanoleaf among the first vendors to confirm testing. The feature was real, but the 2024 headline was easy to overread: a Matter badge, Apple Home compatibility, or RGB color support alone does not guarantee Adaptive Lighting.
Apple’s later requirements clarify the situation. On iOS 26 and later, Matter lights need suitable tunable-white hardware and Matter 1.4 or later for Adaptive Lighting to be available by default. Firmware, home-hub software, Thread infrastructure, and whether a product is paired directly or through a bridge can also affect availability.

What Adaptive Lighting does
Adaptive Lighting automatically changes a compatible light’s color temperature throughout the day. It generally uses cooler, bluer white light around midday and warmer, yellower light in the morning and evening, with less blue content at night.

This is primarily an automatic color-temperature schedule. It should not be described as a complete brightness-based circadian-lighting system. Whether brightness changes as well depends on a separate vendor feature or automation.

Apple’s description of Adaptive Lighting is available in its Adaptive Lighting over Matter accessory requirements.
Why Matter support was significant
Apple introduced Adaptive Lighting for compatible HomeKit lights in iOS 14, but Matter lights did not initially receive the same capability. That created an important distinction between three different claims:
- Matter compatibility: the accessory can be paired with Apple Home.
- Color-temperature support: the light can change between warm and cool white.
- Adaptive Lighting support: Apple Home can automatically manage that color-temperature behavior during the day.
A bulb can meet the first two conditions without meeting the third. Matter is the connectivity and interoperability standard; it is not itself a lighting schedule.

In July and August 2024, an iOS 18 beta exposed an Adaptive Lighting control for at least some Matter lights. Nanoleaf CEO Gimmy Chu confirmed that the company was testing the feature on Matter-based Essentials products. The original report appeared on August 8, 2024, while iOS 18 was still in beta.
The safest historical description is therefore: iOS 18 added Adaptive Lighting support for selected Matter products, rather than guaranteeing the feature for every Matter bulb. The report established an early implementation and vendor confirmation—not universal support across Nanoleaf, Philips Hue, WiZ, Aqara, Govee, or every other lighting brand.

Apple’s June 10, 2024 iOS 18 announcement highlighted Home features such as guest access, but did not prominently announce Matter Adaptive Lighting. The capability surfaced later through beta software and reporting. See the original 2024 report and Apple’s iOS 18 announcement.
Apple’s later requirements
Apple’s current published accessory document, revision R1 dated September 16, 2025, provides a more specific technical baseline than the original iOS 18 report.
An eligible Matter light must advertise a color-temperature range of at least 200–370 mired, approximately 2700–5000 K. Apple recommends a wider range of 178–500 mired, approximately 2000–5600 K.
The document also states that, in iOS 26 and later, Adaptive Lighting over Matter is available by default for lights that meet the hardware requirements and support Matter 1.4 or later. That wording represents a later, more explicit baseline. It should not be projected backward as proof that Matter 1.4 was required for every iOS 18 setup.
A suitable color-temperature range is a requirement, not a guarantee. The manufacturer still needs to provide the relevant firmware and Matter implementation, and Apple Home needs to recognize the accessory as eligible.

What you need to use it
- An iPhone or iPad running a compatible current operating system.
- A genuinely tunable-white Matter light—not merely an on/off, dimmable, or RGB-only bulb.
- Accessory firmware that implements the feature.
- The light added to Apple Home.
- Up-to-date Apple Home hub software where a HomePod or Apple TV is participating.
- For Thread products, suitable Thread infrastructure, such as a compatible Thread-enabled home hub or border router.
Apple says iOS 18 devices can add and control some Matter accessories without a home hub. However, Thread-based accessories have additional network requirements, and Apple recommends setting up a home hub for the best overall Home experience. Relevant Thread infrastructure can include Apple TV 4K, HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation), and compatible third-party Thread border routers. Apple’s Matter accessory support page lists the applicable requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to add a Matter light to Apple Home
- Open the Home app.
- Tap the Add button.
- Tap Add Accessory.
- If the light is already paired with another Matter ecosystem, tap More options and select it.
- Otherwise, scan the Matter setup code or hold the iPhone near the accessory when prompted.
- Complete the onscreen setup.
Pairing confirms that Apple Home can control the accessory. It does not confirm that Adaptive Lighting is supported.
Where to look for Adaptive Lighting
Open the room containing the light and press and hold its tile. Open the light’s color or color-temperature controls and look for Adaptive Lighting among the available modes.
The exact interface can vary between iOS releases and accessory firmware, so a different-looking control does not necessarily indicate a problem. Conversely, an absent control is a useful compatibility signal: it may mean that the accessory, firmware, Matter path, or Home configuration is not eligible.
If the option is missing
1. Check the light’s actual capabilities
Confirm that the model supports tunable white and inspect its published color-temperature range. A Matter light that only supports on/off, dimming, RGB color, or an insufficient white range may not qualify.

2. Update the manufacturer’s firmware
Matter certification does not mean that every optional Apple Home feature is implemented at launch. Open the vendor’s app, check for accessory updates, and confirm whether updates are delivered through the app, Matter over-the-air updates, or a bridge.
3. Check the relevant Matter version
For the later baseline, Apple’s requirements specify Matter 1.4 or later on iOS 26 and later. Do not treat that as a universal explanation for an iOS 18 setup; iOS 18-era availability was more limited and product-dependent.
4. Update Apple Home hubs
Update participating HomePods and Apple TVs as well as the iPhone or iPad. A current phone cannot compensate for stale software on the Apple Home devices managing the home.
5. Check Thread infrastructure
If the bulb uses Thread, verify that the home has an appropriate Thread-enabled hub or border router and that the accessory is reachable. Thread connectivity problems can look like a missing or unreliable Home feature.
6. Identify bridge limitations
A product described as Matter-compatible may expose its lights through a vendor bridge rather than as direct Matter accessories. The bridge may offer mature vendor features, but it may not expose the same capabilities as direct pairing. Check the exact pairing method before assuming the product supports Adaptive Lighting in Apple Home.

7. Consider multiple ecosystems
Matter devices can be shared across ecosystems, but Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, and a manufacturer’s app may not expose identical automation features. A routine working in the vendor app is not proof that Apple Home Adaptive Lighting is available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is it the same as Nanoleaf or Philips Hue lighting automation?
No. Apple Home Adaptive Lighting is an Apple-managed color-temperature behavior exposed through Home. Nanoleaf Circadian Lighting, Philips Hue routines, and similar vendor features are manufacturer-specific scenes, schedules, or automations. They may work independently of Apple Home and may offer different behavior, controls, or brightness changes.
What to check before buying
Do not buy solely on the basis of a Matter logo. Check these points in order:
- Explicit Apple Home Adaptive Lighting support: look for that exact claim for the exact model.
- Tunable-white range: confirm that the light meets Apple’s stated minimum, rather than assuming RGB support is enough.
- Firmware policy: find out how updates are delivered and whether the feature requires a particular firmware version.
- Transport: Wi-Fi may be simpler for some installations; Thread can reduce Wi-Fi congestion but requires suitable infrastructure.
- Direct Matter or bridge: direct pairing can improve cross-platform flexibility, while a bridge may offer more mature device management at the cost of extra hardware.
- Recovery procedure: confirm how to reset, update, remove, and re-add the light, especially if it will be shared across ecosystems.
Nanoleaf Essentials Matter products were the early, formally confirmed example in the 2024 reporting. Nanoleaf’s official Essentials page is the appropriate place to check current models and claims. Philips Hue is a major bridge-based alternative; consult the official Hue ecosystem page for current product and bridge information. Neither a brand name nor a Matter category by itself proves current Adaptive Lighting support for a particular model.
If Adaptive Lighting is unavailable
You can approximate the effect with scheduled Apple Home scenes: choose a cooler color temperature for daytime, warmer settings for morning and evening, and a warmer low-blue setting at bedtime. This workaround requires more setup and uses fixed times rather than a continuously adaptive profile. It also depends on the bulb exposing reliable color-temperature control.
The timeline in brief
- iOS 14: Adaptive Lighting was introduced for compatible HomeKit lights.
- August 2024: iOS 18 beta support appeared for selected Matter lights; Nanoleaf confirmed testing on Matter Essentials products.
- iOS 18 production era: availability remained dependent on the accessory, firmware, Apple Home configuration, and connection method.
- September 16, 2025: Apple published explicit Adaptive Lighting over Matter requirements.
- iOS 26 and later: Apple’s documented default-support rule applies to compliant lights supporting Matter 1.4 or later.
Apple’s broader Matter documentation is available through its Apple Home Matter overview.
