Kohler’s Dekoda is a $599 toilet-rim attachment that uses optical sensing to inspect the contents of the bowl and send trend-oriented health information to a companion app. Kohler says it can provide insights about hydration, bowel-pattern or “gut health” trends, and the presence of blood in the bowl. It is not a medical diagnostic device, and it is not designed to film the person using the toilet.
The device launched under Kohler Health in October 2025. A membership is required, so the real cost is the hardware plus an ongoing subscription. The more difficult questions are whether its readings are clinically useful, how household data is handled, and whether passive monitoring is worth the privacy trade-off.

What is Kohler Dekoda?
Dekoda is a compact device that clips onto the rim of a compatible toilet bowl. Kohler describes it as a bathroom health-monitoring system using optical sensors and patented spectroscopy. Its adjustable, no-tools clamp is intended to fit “most” toilet bowls, although that does not guarantee compatibility with every rim shape, seat, bowl clearance, or bathroom installation.

The device is designed as a retrofit rather than a feature limited to a Kohler smart toilet. Kohler says it uses a rechargeable magnetic battery and sends information to the Kohler Health mobile app. A membership is required to use the system.

Does Dekoda really use a camera?
“Toilet camera” is a memorable description, but it can suggest something broader than the product is meant to do. Dekoda points downward into the toilet bowl and uses optical hardware to inspect what is in the water. It is not described as a conventional security camera aimed at the user’s body.
At the same time, calling it only a generic sensor understates the privacy issue. Reporting has characterized the optical system as camera-like or as containing a camera. The most accurate description is that Dekoda looks into the bowl during an authenticated bathroom session; it is not intended to record the person sitting on the toilet, but it does analyze intimate biological material.

How a typical session works
- Attach Dekoda to the toilet rim.
- Start a private session by scanning a fingerprint or logging in through the Kohler Health app.
- Use the toilet normally.
- Review the resulting insights in the app.
Authentication is intended to keep different household members’ results separate. It does not, however, prove that every sample belongs exclusively to one person or that an interpretation is medically accurate. Guests, children, missed logins, and shared use can all create incomplete or misassigned records.

What health information does it provide?
Hydration-related insights
Kohler says Dekoda can provide hydration-related information. That should not be confused with a laboratory measurement of blood osmolality or a clinical diagnosis of dehydration. It is a consumer wellness signal whose usefulness depends on the company’s sensing and interpretation methods.
Gut-health and bowel patterns
“Gut health” is a broad wellness term rather than one standardized clinical measurement. Dekoda is intended to identify patterns associated with bowel movements over time. Longitudinal tracking may be more useful than a single reading, but users may need consistent use before a personal baseline becomes meaningful.

Kohler says the system can alert users to the presence of blood in the bowl. That is a warning signal, not a diagnosis. Blood can have many causes and may come from the urinary, gastrointestinal, or reproductive systems. Menstrual blood, contamination, toilet water, and other conditions may complicate interpretation.
A blood alert should prompt appropriate medical advice. Conversely, no alert does not prove that a person is healthy, and anyone with concerning symptoms should not wait for Dekoda to confirm them.
What Dekoda cannot establish
The available product information does not establish that Dekoda replaces a medical examination, laboratory test, or clinician’s diagnosis. Kohler describes the system as using patented spectroscopy and validated machine-learning algorithms, but the available material does not provide a publicly accessible peer-reviewed validation study or independently reproducible dataset establishing accuracy for each advertised feature.

Important evidence questions include:
- How sensitive and specific is blood detection?
- How are hydration estimates defined and validated?
- What does the app’s “gut health” scoring actually measure?
- How does performance vary with toilet design, lighting, cleaning products, stool consistency, or urine and stool mixing?
- Were results compared with laboratory reference methods?
Until those details are available, marketing terms such as “precise,” “real-time,” and “validated” should be treated as company claims rather than independently verified clinical conclusions.

Privacy has several separate layers:
- Physical field of view: Kohler says the sensors point into the bowl rather than elsewhere in the bathroom.
- Household access: Fingerprint scanning and app login are intended to separate users’ results.
- Data processing: Buyers need to know whether raw images are processed locally or uploaded, whether images are retained, and how long derived results remain available.
- Company access: Encryption does not automatically mean that Kohler cannot access decrypted data.
Kohler’s launch materials referred to end-to-end encryption. Ars Technica reported a technical criticism that Kohler’s implementation may not meet the ordinary technical meaning of that term if the company can access decrypted user data. This is a dispute about the accuracy of the encryption description, not evidence that Dekoda data has been publicly exposed in a breach.
Before buying, check the current privacy policy and ask:
- Are raw images stored?
- Can users delete images and derived health records?
- Is data used to train machine-learning systems?
- Is information shared with service providers, affiliates, advertisers, researchers, insurers, or other parties?
- What happens to stored data if the membership ends?
- Can a fingerprint or account be revoked?
What does Dekoda cost?
The verified launch price was $599. Launch-era third-party coverage reported an individual membership at about $6.99 per month and a family membership at about $12.99 per month. Kohler’s current checkout and membership terms should be checked before purchase because subscription pricing and plan structures can change.

That is a launch-era estimate, not a current quote. Since membership is required, Dekoda is not simply a one-time $599 appliance. Buyers should also consider taxes, future price changes, charging, cleaning, and the possibility that the device becomes less useful if the service is discontinued or the subscription is canceled.

Toilet compatibility
Kohler says the clamp fits most toilet bowls, not all toilets. Confirm rim dimensions, seat clearance, bowl shape, and whether the device interferes with seat movement or cleaning. The available information does not establish universal support for every round or elongated bowl.
Cleaning products
Colored water, bowl tablets, disinfectants, residue, and other cleaning chemicals could affect optical readings. The available product material does not establish which products are supported or prohibited, so the official care instructions matter.
Authentication and incomplete data
A fingerprint or app login may reduce account mix-ups, but only if every user authenticates consistently. Visitors, children, and users who forget to start a session may produce missing or incorrectly assigned records.

The most serious failure is not merely an incorrect wellness score. It is a user delaying medical care because Dekoda did not flag a problem. Consumer monitoring should support—not replace—professional evaluation.

Dekoda versus Withings U-Scan
Withings’ U-Scan Nutrio is a useful comparison because it also installs in a toilet but takes a different approach. It is designed for urine analysis through replaceable cartridges, with advertised markers including hydration-related measures, ketones, vitamin C, and urine chemistry.

U-Scan may suit someone focused on urine chemistry or ketones. Dekoda is more relevant to someone interested in passive bowel-pattern tracking and blood-in-the-bowl alerts. Neither should be treated as a substitute for testing ordered or interpreted by a medical professional.
Who should consider Dekoda?
Dekoda may make sense for a data-oriented wellness user who wants passive, long-term bathroom trend tracking, has a compatible toilet, can authenticate consistently, and is comfortable with the subscription and privacy model.

- Needs a diagnosis or laboratory-grade confirmation.
- Has active or concerning symptoms and is considering delaying care.
- Does not want intimate health data handled through an app and cloud service.
- Is unwilling to pay an ongoing membership.
- Cannot confirm toilet compatibility or maintain the device reliably.
Bottom line
Dekoda is an intriguing toilet-mounted wellness tracker, not a diagnostic laboratory hidden under the bathroom seat. Its strongest proposition is convenience: it may help users observe personal patterns without collecting samples manually. Its weaknesses are equally important—the recurring cost, uncertain independent evidence for advertised insights, practical shared-bathroom issues, and unresolved questions about how optical data is processed and accessed.
Before buying, weigh three questions: will the trend information change what you do, are you comfortable with the privacy trade-off, and is the ongoing membership worth it?
