Kohler Dekoda is a separate, rechargeable device that clamps onto the rim of an existing toilet and uses optical sensing, including spectroscopy-based analysis, to generate wellness insights about digestive patterns, hydration, and possible blood presence.
That makes “analyzes your gut health” useful marketing shorthand, but not a medical description. Dekoda is not a microbiome test, disease diagnostic, or substitute for a doctor, laboratory test, or colonoscopy.

What is Kohler Dekoda?
Launched through Kohler Health in October 2025, Dekoda is a compact toilet-mounted health tracker. An adjustable clamp attaches it to the rim of most toilet bowls without tools. The device has a removable magnetic battery and sends its results to the Kohler Health app.

Products such as the Numi 2.0, Veil, and Eir focus on features including bidet washing, heated seating, drying, automated lids or flushing, deodorization, lighting, and hygiene. Dekoda is an add-on monitoring device, not a toilet with those features built in. Kohler’s smart-toilet comparison chart illustrates the distinction.

How a Dekoda session works
- Attach Dekoda to the toilet rim.
- Authenticate with a fingerprint scan or the Kohler Health app.
- Use the toilet normally.
- Let the device analyze the bowl contents in the background.
- Review the resulting information in the Kohler Health app.
- Tag relevant context, such as food, medication, exercise, stress, or travel.
Authentication is intended to keep household members’ data separate. It does not guarantee perfect attribution: someone may forget to authenticate, use the wrong account, or use the toilet without starting a recognized session. A missed session also means an incomplete trend record.
What does Dekoda measure?
Digestive patterns
Kohler says Dekoda can help users identify patterns in their bathroom data and compare them with factors such as diet, medication, stress, activity, and travel. That may be useful for someone who wants a longer-term record instead of relying on memory or manually logging every bowel movement.
However, “gut health” should not be interpreted as a laboratory measurement. The published product information does not establish that Dekoda measures the gut microbiome, identifies pathogens, assesses nutrient deficiencies or calorie absorption, or diagnoses cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or another gastrointestinal condition.
Hydration-related insights
Kohler also promotes hydration insights. These should be treated as wellness signals or estimates—not as a replacement for clinical evaluation, blood testing, or a validated medical hydration assessment.
Possible blood presence
Dekoda can alert users to possible blood in the toilet bowl. That is potentially useful as a prompt to pay attention, but it is not a diagnosis and may not establish where the blood came from.
Interpretation can be complicated by menstruation, hemorrhoids, urinary bleeding, food coloring, cleaning products, bowl water, lighting, and other factors. Visible or repeated blood, especially alongside pain, unexplained weight loss, persistent diarrhea, constipation, dizziness, or weakness, should be discussed with a medical professional regardless of what Dekoda reports. A normal device result should not override concerning symptoms.

Is Dekoda really a toilet camera?
News coverage often calls Dekoda a “toilet camera” because it captures images or image-like information from inside the bowl. Kohler’s own description emphasizes patented spectroscopy and optical sensor technology.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The most accurate summary is that Dekoda is a toilet-mounted optical tracker that includes camera-like sensing. Kohler says the sensors point down into the bowl; it is not presented as a camera filming a person’s body or the wider bathroom.
How private is the data?
Authentication and encryption are meaningful privacy features, but they do not mean Kohler is technically unable to process the information.
TechCrunch reported in December 2025 that Kohler’s earlier description of Dekoda data as protected by “end-to-end encryption” was inaccurate in the conventional security sense. According to that reporting, data is encrypted in transit and at rest, then decrypted on Kohler’s systems for processing. Kohler subsequently removed the end-to-end-encryption wording from the product page.
That distinction matters. With conventional end-to-end encryption, the service provider generally cannot read the content while delivering the service. If Kohler’s servers decrypt Dekoda data to analyze it, users should assume that the company’s systems process sensitive health information.

Is Dekoda a medical device?
Dekoda is marketed as an at-home health and wellness tracker. The available product information does not establish that it is FDA-cleared, medically validated, or intended to provide clinical diagnoses.
In practical terms, treat its alerts as screening-style signals and its trends as wellness information. It should not replace a physician, laboratory test, colonoscopy, or other clinical evaluation.

Price and membership
TechCrunch reported a hardware price of $599. A membership is required, and reporting placed the subscription at at least $6.99 per month. At that reported monthly rate, the first year would cost at least $682.88 before tax: $599 for the hardware plus $83.88 in membership fees.
Those are reported price signals rather than a guaranteed current checkout price. Membership plans and prices can change, so confirm the live terms on Kohler’s purchase page before ordering. Earlier reporting described annual options ranging from $70 to $156, but those figures should not be assumed to remain current.
Practical limitations to consider
Toilet compatibility
Kohler says the adjustable clamp fits most toilet bowls, but “most” is not the same as universal compatibility. Verify the current installation guide before buying if your toilet is rimless, skirted, compact, wall-hung, unusually shaped, or has limited clearance around the rim. Exact exclusions were not established in the available product information.

- Quick-Release functionality allows seat to be removed easily from toilet for convenient cleaning, creating an easy clean toilet seat; KOHLER elongated toilet seat features color-matched plastic hinges
- Contoured KOHLER toilet seat for user comfort; Quick-Attach hardware enables fast and secure installation
- Toilet seat replacement fits most elongated toilets and elongated models
- KOHLER elongated toilet seats are not returnable if opened or outside original packaging
Battery and connectivity
The battery is removable and magnetic, but current battery runtime, charging time, connectivity requirements, and offline behavior should be confirmed in the latest manual or support documentation. Because Kohler’s systems process the data, a network outage could affect analysis or reporting.
False positives and false negatives
Optical readings can be affected by lighting, bowl water, cleaning products, diet, urine, menstruation, hemorrhoids, and other variables. No single alert should be treated as proof of a medical condition.
Shared bathrooms
Dekoda is most useful when household members authenticate consistently. A shared toilet with skipped sessions can create gaps or incorrectly attributed records.
Subscription dependence
The membership is not an incidental add-on: it is required for the product. Before purchasing, determine what remains available if the membership is canceled, including historical data, basic sensing, alerts, and app access.
Who might benefit from Dekoda?
Dekoda may make sense for someone who:
- Wants long-term bathroom-pattern tracking.
- Wants to correlate digestive changes with food, medication, stress, exercise, or travel.
- Prefers passive monitoring to manual stool or hydration logging.
- Can authenticate consistently in a shared household.
- Accepts both the upfront cost and an ongoing membership.
- Is comfortable with sensitive data being processed on a vendor’s servers.
It is a poor fit for someone seeking a clinical diagnosis, microbiome sequencing, immediate evaluation of bleeding or persistent symptoms, or a device with no recurring fee.
Alternatives
Manual tracking
A notebook or ordinary health app costs less and gives the user more control over the data. The trade-off is that it requires regular effort and cannot automatically analyze bowl contents.
Best Value
- Silent Fill Technology: Provides a gracious experience by filling the tank quietly
- Adjustable with Multiple Fill-rate Inserts: Are provided to optimize performance and conserve water
- Compatibility: Compatible with Kohler Class 5 toilets; confirm shank color to determine correct part; If grey, use this part and if black, use GP1083167
- Please note: Cap color may vary. Never use an abrasive material such as a brush or scouring pad to clean surfaces
Withings U-Scan
Withings has pursued a different bathroom-monitoring category focused on urine analysis rather than Dekoda’s stool- and bowl-oriented tracking. It is not an equivalent product, and current pricing, cartridge costs, availability, and supported measurements should be checked separately.
Throne
Throne is another toilet-mounted stool-monitoring concept. Its current pricing, compatibility, subscription terms, availability, and data practices need independent verification before treating it as a direct purchase alternative.
Conventional smart toilets
If the goal is bidet cleansing, heated seating, drying, automated flushing, deodorization, or bathroom comfort, Kohler’s conventional smart-toilet lineup is the relevant category. Those products should not be confused with Dekoda or presented as gut-health analyzers.
What buyers should verify before ordering
- The current $599 hardware price and membership rate.
- Whether the membership is required for historical data and core analysis.
- Exact toilet-shape and clearance requirements.
- Battery runtime and charging process.
- Phone, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and operating-system requirements.
- Cloud-processing, retention, deletion, export, and account-closure terms.
- Whether optional AI-training consent can be refused or withdrawn.
- What medical limitations Kohler places on blood and digestive insights.
Verdict
Kohler Dekoda is a real and technically unusual wellness tracker, not a magical diagnostic toilet. Its value depends on whether automated bathroom trend tracking is useful enough to justify a $599 device, a required membership, imperfect readings, and cloud processing of highly sensitive health data.
For buyers who want longitudinal bathroom insights and accept those trade-offs, Dekoda is a distinctive product. For anyone seeking medical answers, microbiome testing, or a one-time purchase, it is the wrong tool.
