They are being refined into connected rooms with distinct zones for storage, preparation, cooking, cleanup and hosting. Recent NKBA and Houzz findings point to a practical shift: homeowners still want conversation and visual connection, but they are adding built-in storage, better task lighting and, where space permits, concealed support areas that keep everyday work out of sight.
Why the open kitchen is being reworked
The traditional open plan removed walls between the kitchen, dining area and living room. That improved sightlines and social interaction, but it also left every appliance, delivery, dirty dish and food-preparation task visible and audible. Zoned planning keeps the connection while giving each activity a defined home.

NKBA’s 2026 Trends Report describes kitchens as personalized, multipurpose hubs and found unanimous respondent agreement that lifestyle enhancements will be a popular layout feature during the next three years. Bill Darcy, Global President and CEO of NKBA | KBIS, said the report confirms homeowners’ desire for “connection and cohesive design between spaces for entertainment, functionality and wellness.”

Expansion does not necessarily mean a larger single room; it can mean assigning more functions to adjacent pantry, beverage or utility areas.

What a zoned kitchen includes
A zone is a compact work area in which the necessary tools, storage, lighting and counter space are kept together. Zones may share one room or extend into an adjoining pantry or dining area.
Storage zone
Place the refrigerator or freezer, pantry cabinets, bulk food and appliance garages together where possible. This is the point for unloading groceries and retrieving ingredients without crossing the cooking path.
Prep zone
Provide uninterrupted counter space beside the sink for knives, cutting boards, mixing bowls and waste or recycling. Keep frequently used utensils and prep ingredients within one or two steps.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces
- Complete a wide range of applications with a high-performance motor that delivers up to 300 UWO, and an impact driver delivering up to 1,400 in-lbs of torque
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
Cooking zone
Group the range or cooktop with heat-safe landing space, oils, pans, utensils and ventilation controls. A landing surface on both sides of a cooktop is more useful than storage that requires walking around the island.
Cleanup zone
Center this zone on the sink and dishwasher, with dish storage nearby. Position it so a person loading the dishwasher does not block the main route between the refrigerator and prep counter.
Beverage and hosting zone
A coffee machine, drinks refrigerator, glassware and serving pieces can occupy a corner of the kitchen, an island end or a nearby cabinet run. Separating drinks from the main cooking route lets guests help themselves without entering the work area.

Social and dining zone
Island seating, a banquette, a table or an open connection to the living room preserves conversation and supervision of children. The social zone should not become the only place to set down hot pans or grocery bags.

How open, broken-plan and separated layouts compare
| Layout | Visibility | Acoustic and odor control | Workflow distance | Storage capacity | Social connection | Space and budget implications |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open concept | Cooking and clutter remain largely visible from adjacent rooms. | Sound and cooking smells travel readily. | Can be short when all functions share one room. | Depends heavily on cabinetry and island depth. | Strongest direct connection to guests and family. | Usually fewer walls, but requires disciplined storage, lighting and ventilation. |
| Broken plan | Half-height walls, cabinetry or ceiling changes screen selected tasks. | Some reduction in noise and visual spillover. | Zones remain close while circulation becomes clearer. | More opportunities for built-ins and concealed storage. | Conversation and sightlines remain available. | Moderate construction and cabinetry work. |
| More separated kitchen | Doors or walls can hide most preparation and cleanup. | Best control of sound and odors when ventilation is properly designed. | May increase trips between kitchen and dining or living areas. | Can support a pantry or dedicated prep room. | Less continuous interaction during cooking. | Higher structural, ventilation, lighting and finish costs. |
Built-in storage is the foundation of zoning
Houzz’s 2025 renovation survey, released in 2026, found that 76% of renovating homeowners incorporated built-in features. Pantry cabinets appeared in 47% of renovations and walk-in pantries in 16%. These figures indicate that storage is no longer an afterthought: it is one of the main tools for keeping an open kitchen usable.
Specify cabinet interiors as carefully as the fronts. Pull-out shelves can bring heavy items to the doorway; vertical dividers can hold trays and boards; deep drawers can store pots; and an appliance garage can keep a toaster or mixer off the worktop while leaving it connected. Use adjustable containers and pull-out organizers in pantry, prep and beverage zones so supplies remain visible without occupying the main counters.

Do you need a prep kitchen or butler’s pantry?
Usually, no. Houzz reported butler’s pantries or prep kitchens in 7% of surveyed renovations, making them an established but selective solution rather than a universal requirement.
A secondary space is most useful when the household regularly entertains, buys food in bulk, uses several countertop appliances or wants a place to prepare messy tasks away from guests. It needs enough counter depth, electrical capacity, task lighting, ventilation and convenient access to the main kitchen. A narrow room filled with appliances but no landing space simply moves the congestion elsewhere.

Those options can be incorporated without turning the kitchen into a fully separate room.

Lighting makes zones legible and safer
NKBA’s 2025 findings identify task lighting for work zones as important to 92% of respondents. Under-cabinet lighting was cited by 82% as a leading lighting choice. Plan lighting by task rather than relying on one central ceiling fixture.
- Use continuous under-cabinet LED lighting over prep and cleanup counters, with the light source positioned toward the front of the cabinet to reduce shadows.
- Light the cooking zone with fixtures that do not place the cook’s head between the source and the work surface.
- Give the pantry, appliance garage and beverage area their own switched or sensor-controlled light.
- Use pendants or decorative fixtures over an island only where they do not obstruct sightlines or conflict with ventilation.
How to create zones in an existing open kitchen
- Map the actual routines. Track where groceries are unloaded, where ingredients are chopped, where dirty dishes accumulate and where guests stand. Design around those paths rather than an idealized triangle.
- Measure clearances. Confirm that doors, drawers and the dishwasher can open without blocking the primary route. Preserve comfortable passage around the island and between the refrigerator, sink and cooktop.
- Assign each item a zone. Store ingredients near the refrigerator and prep counter, cookware near the cooktop, dishes near the dishwasher and drinks near the hosting area.
- Add visual boundaries. Use cabinet groupings, an island, a half-height partition, ceiling detail, contrasting worktops or a pantry door to signal where one activity ends and another begins.
- Layer the lighting. Install task lighting first, then ambient and accent fixtures. Put work zones on controls that can be used independently during cooking or entertaining.
- Screen only what causes problems. If dirty dishes are the issue, conceal the cleanup run; if small appliances create clutter, provide an appliance garage; if odors travel, improve hood performance or add a closable support area.
- Test the plan before construction. Mark cabinet and island footprints on the floor and walk a typical grocery trip, meal preparation and cleanup sequence. Adjust before ordering cabinetry.
Keeping an open kitchen social without displaying mess
Social connection comes from sightlines and shared seating, not from leaving every task exposed. Place seating at the end of an island or on the living-room side, keep the prep counter facing the conversation area and use a short screen or tall cabinet to hide the sink full of dishes. A beverage station outside the main cooking path gives guests something useful to do without entering the work triangle.
Ventilation is equally important. Choose hood capacity and ducting with the cooking equipment and room volume in mind, and avoid locating the main seating directly in the exhaust path. Acoustic control can come from upholstered seating, resilient flooring details and doors on a pantry or utility area.

What this shift means for a renovation decision
Choose a fully open plan when direct interaction is the overriding priority and the household can maintain visible counters and strong ventilation. Choose broken-plan zoning when you want connection with selective concealment. Consider a more separated kitchen or secondary prep space when entertaining, storage demand, noise or odor control consistently outweighs uninterrupted sightlines.
The evidence supports more intentional separation within connected layouts, not the end of open kitchens. Start with the work that causes friction, give it a defined zone, and then decide whether cabinetry, lighting, a screen or a separate room is the proportionate solution.
