What is being upgraded at Manchester Airport station?
The project covers the station’s platforms and the railway infrastructure that feeds into it. Network Rail says platforms 1, 2 and 3 will be extended, the junction outside the station remodelled, the track layout on the approach changed and signalling modernised. Network Rail’s announcement and its project page describe the work as part of the wider Manchester Rail Upgrade.
Why the railway needs these changes
Network Rail says the current layout limits train movements into and out of the station, while existing platform lengths restrict which trains can call there. The planned extensions and track, junction and signalling changes are intended to accommodate longer trains, increase capacity and flexibility, and improve train movements and reliability.
What is the project value—and is Kier’s contract £65m?
Network Rail’s 7 October 2026 announcement calls the scheme a £115 million investment into Manchester Airport station and identifies Kier as the contractor. It does not state that Kier’s contract is worth £65 million, nor does it give a separate contract award value. The £65 million figure in the original headline therefore should not be treated as a verified contract value on the basis of the official sources.

When will work take place, and when is the station closure?
Network Rail’s current delivery window runs from the end of 2026 to the middle of 2028. Its project page lists the following planned railway disruption:
- Sunday 6 December 2026: a one-day station closure to begin the work.
- During 2027: further weekend closures.
- At the start of 2028: a 10-week period of upgrades.
Network Rail says details of later train-service changes will be added when confirmed. Closure dates and services may change, so passengers should check the Network Rail project page for current information before travelling.

Will Manchester Airport remain open during the railway closures?
Yes. Network Rail states: “Manchester Airport will remain open during the railway closure.” The closures affect rail access, so travellers should check their train operator’s service information and allow for any revised journey arrangements.
