The Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT) says a hollow precast-concrete (PC) column system could accelerate construction of semiconductor plants and other large industrial buildings. The method factory-produces a reinforced outer shell, transports the column while its core is empty, erects it on site, and then fills the void with concrete. KICT designed the system to cut construction time by up to 30% depending on site conditions, but that figure remains a development target until field demonstrations confirm it.
What is KICT’s hollow PC column method?
Instead of casting a complete reinforced-concrete column at the job site or shipping a solid precast member weighing tens of tonnes, KICT makes a reinforced precast shell in a factory. The shell is transported hollow, positioned with a conventional construction-site crane, and filled with concrete after erection. The finished member functions as one integrated structural column.

Why are semiconductor plants a target?
Semiconductor fabs need wide column spacing and generous floor-to-ceiling heights for process equipment, utilities and material-handling systems. Those dimensions create large, heavy columns. Conventional cast-in-place reinforced concrete requires formwork, rebar assembly and curing at the site. Full precast columns move more work into a factory but can become difficult to transport and lift because each unit may weigh tens of tonnes.

Steel columns can reduce dead weight, yet KICT’s announcement notes continuing material-cost pressure for steel. The hollow PC approach is intended to retain factory production’s schedule advantages while reducing the weight that must travel to and around the site.
How does the hollow section change installation?
The empty core reduces the transported member’s mass before the column is filled. KICT says the lighter units are intended to be lifted with ordinary site cranes rather than specialized heavy lifting equipment. That can simplify logistics on projects where access, road limits or crane capacity constrain deliveries.

How much time could the method save?
KICT reports a potential construction-time reduction of up to 30%, with the result dependent on site conditions. The institute has fabricated a full-scale prototype and confirmed that factory production is feasible. However, a same-day report cautioned that the schedule claim still requires future field demonstrations. The 30% figure should therefore be read as a potential maximum or development target, not a measured result from an operating semiconductor project.
Is the hollow column as safe as a solid column?
KICT says the system was designed to provide seismic performance equal to or better than conventional solid columns, with reinforcement placed according to domestic structural-design standards. Those are the institute’s reported design and prototype findings. Project engineers would still need to verify the column for the applicable national code, loads, fire requirements, connections, construction tolerances and site-specific seismic conditions.
How does it compare with other column systems?
The principal trade-off is between factory work, transported weight, site labor and the maturity of the evidence. The cited material does not provide numerical cost comparisons or field-performance data.

Where else could hollow PC columns be used?
KICT lists data centers, logistics centers, large warehouses, industrial plants, parking towers and large mixed-use facilities in addition to semiconductor fabs. These buildings share a need for long spans, tall floors or repetitive heavy-column layouts, although suitability must be established by each project’s engineer.

The development was supported by South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT through a 2025–2026 small and medium-sized enterprise support project. KICT says the technology is scheduled for transfer to CAMUS E&C. A transfer announcement is not the same as broad market deployment: project owners will need approved designs, construction procedures, quality controls and field evidence before specifying the method at scale.
KICT President Park Sun-kyu said: “The technology we have developed can ensure the safety of large columns while reducing both their weight and construction time, and can be used to build large industrial facilities such as semiconductor plants more quickly. We will continue working to advance construction technology so that infrastructure underpinning the country’s key industries can be built safely and swiftly.”

What should contractors verify before specifying the system?
- Whether the local structural code accepts the proposed composite, infilled-column design and connection details.
- Crane capacity, access routes, delivery limits and temporary stability during shell erection.
- Factory capacity, dimensional tolerances, reinforcement inspection and concrete-infill quality assurance.
- Fire, durability, seismic and vibration requirements for the specific facility.
- A project schedule supported by field data rather than the unvalidated 30% target.
- Commercial terms and technical responsibilities under any technology-transfer or licensing arrangement.
