Keystone Native Plants for a Thriving Wildlife Habitat

Keystone native plants support local food webs, but the right choices depend on your ecoregion and site. Find regional lists and practical selection tips.

Keystone native plants are regionally important plants that support a disproportionate share of local wildlife, especially insects that feed birds and other animals. To choose them well, start with your ecoregion, then match locally native species to your site’s sunlight, soil, moisture, and available space.

What are keystone native plants?

Native plants are species that occurred naturally in a region without human introduction, according to the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). Within that broader group, keystone plants are genera or species with especially important relationships to local food webs. Their value depends on place: a keystone plant in one ecoregion may not be native or suitable in another.

NWF summarizes research indicating that 14% of native plants support 90% of butterfly and moth (Lepidoptera) species. It also reports Jarrod Fowler’s finding that 15% to 60% of North American native bee species are pollen specialists, using pollen from 40% of native plants. The NWF page does not state the publication years for these underlying findings, and the percentages should not be read as identical for every region or as a prediction of wildlife numbers in a particular yard. Habitat area, plant establishment, local species, management, and connections to nearby habitat also affect what a site supports.

How do these plants support wildlife?

The benefit is not limited to nectar. Native plants can provide host leaves for caterpillars, pollen for specialist bees, seeds and fruit for birds and mammals, and vegetation or leaf litter for shelter and life-cycle habitat. NWF reports that 96% of terrestrial bird species in the United States depend on insects as food for their young; its page does not give the figure’s year. That relationship helps explain why growing host plants can matter even when a plant is not a showy nectar source.

Which native plants help wildlife in my area?

Oaks in the eastern United States

NWF reports that an oak species can support more than 550 caterpillar species in one region; its reviewed pages do not identify the underlying study year. For eastern U.S. oaks, NWF also describes more than 550 butterfly and moth caterpillar species. Those insects help feed young birds, while acorns feed birds and mammals. The canopy is only one part of the habitat: understory plants, shrubs, ground-layer vegetation, and leaf litter can create additional places for wildlife to feed, shelter, and complete life cycles.

Goldenrods in many U.S. areas

NWF reports that goldenrods in many parts of the United States host more than 100 caterpillar species and support more than 20 species of pollen-specialist bees. These figures are not a reason to plant any goldenrod anywhere. Confirm which species are native to your area and whether the site has the right sunlight, soil, moisture, and space.

How do I find native plants for my ecoregion?

  1. Look up your region. Start with NWF’s keystone plants by ecoregion or its Native Plant Finder, which helps identify native plants by ZIP code. Use Xerces Society’s regional pollinator-friendly plant lists as another reference.
  2. Check the conditions where you will plant. Compare candidate plants with the site’s light, drainage, soil, moisture, and available space. A ZIP-code or ecoregion list narrows the choices; it does not establish that every listed plant will thrive in your specific yard.
  3. Plan for more than one resource or season. Consider host plants, pollen and nectar, seeds or fruit, shelter, and places to overwinter. A mix of plant layers and, where appropriate and safe to retain, leaf litter can provide habitat beyond flowers alone.
  4. Keep the planting locally grounded. NWF recommends first aiming for 70% native species in a planting location and says an ideal habitat space would be 100% native. This is NWF guidance, not a universal regulatory standard or a proven threshold for every site. Local fire, disease, access, and management needs may affect whether leaf litter should remain.

Should I buy seeds or live plants?

Either can be a practical route. Seed is useful when establishing a larger area or pollinator planting; live plants may suit a smaller project or a design that needs established plants in selected locations. The sources cited here do not establish a tested winner, survival advantage, or price comparison between them.

Before buying, check the species in the mix or collection, whether they are appropriate for your locality and site, and whether the seller provides information about seed or plant provenance and planting instructions. Xerces provides resources for native wildflower seed mixes, suppliers, and services; its regional pollinator-friendly plant lists can help with local selection. NWF’s ecoregion lists and ZIP-code finder offer another starting point, along with its native-plant resources. These resources do not verify the current stock or provenance of a particular marketplace listing or collection, so assess those details with the seller.
