The John Deere S160 is a strong candidate for a large, relatively open yard—especially about 1 to 2 acres of level or gently sloping grass—but it is not an automatic best-value choice for every property. It combines a 24-hp engine, a 48-inch cutting deck and hydrostatic two-wheel drive. The deciding questions are whether your terrain suits two-wheel drive, whether the wide deck fits your yard, and what the mower costs from a local dealer once delivery and setup are included.
What the John Deere S160 is—and who it suits
The S160 is a lawn tractor with a 24-hp, air-cooled V-twin gasoline engine, a 48-inch Edge mower deck and a hydrostatic two-wheel-drive transaxle. Deere specifies side-by-side pedals for forward and reverse control. The November 2025 specification sheet lists forward speeds from 0 to 5.5 mph and cruise control. These specifications make it a plausible choice for homeowners who need a substantial mower and occasional utility work, not a fit guaranteed by acreage alone.
Mark Wolfe’s October 6, 2026 Bob Vila review recommends it for 1 to 2 acres of level or gently sloping grass. That range is his practical recommendation, not a Deere acreage rating or a universal capacity limit. Yard shape, obstacles, grass conditions and mowing frequency all affect how suitable a 48-inch tractor will be. Read Wolfe’s review at Bob Vila.
Where it makes sense
- Your yard has enough open space to use a 48-inch deck effectively.
- The ground is mostly level or gently sloping.
- You want a lawn tractor that can also handle occasional hauling or seasonal maintenance, subject to compatible attachments and suitable traction.
- You value access to Deere’s dealer and owner-support resources.
Where to be cautious
The S160 is two-wheel drive. Wolfe advises owners of very hilly properties to consider a four-wheel-drive lawn tractor for safety and smoother performance. A wide deck or a powerful engine does not make a two-wheel-drive mower suitable for every slope, wet lawn or soil condition. If your property has steep ground, assess the actual terrain and consult a dealer before choosing a machine.

How it performed in the published review
Wolfe reports testing the S160 for a few weeks, mowing his lawn and an adjacent field and towing different implements. He describes a crisp, clean cut and says it handled fairly heavy towing in that test without bogging down or losing traction. Those are findings from one reviewer’s experience, not a controlled comparison or a guarantee of performance on another property. The results do not establish long-term reliability or how the tractor will behave on a particular slope, soil or attachment.
The review also presents Deere’s service network as part of the value proposition. Deere provides an S160 owner page with safety information, a parts diagram, maintenance parts, the operator’s manual, attachments and specifications. Its page also describes Equipment Mobile functions for manuals, maintenance tracking, parts ordering and diagnostics. These resources establish owner-support options, not a measured advantage in local service response. See Deere’s S160 owner resources.

Deck, controls and ownership details
Cutting and maneuverability
The 48-inch Edge deck is made of 12-gauge steel, according to Deere’s November 2025 specification sheet. That width can cover open ground efficiently, but it also needs room: measure gates and narrow access points, and consider trees, beds and turning areas before buying. Deere lists an 18-inch turning radius and a 20-inch uncut circle radius on that sheet. The uncut-circle figure is the more useful reminder that the mower may leave grass around obstacles that requires a follow-up pass.
Transmission and frame
Deere identifies the transaxle as a TLT200 hydrostatic unit with two-wheel drive and side-by-side pedal control. The November 2025 sheet also lists a full-length welded-steel frame, cast-iron front axle, 300-CCA battery and 14-amp charging capacity. These are specifications, not independent evidence of durability or performance against competing models.

Oil changes and scheduled maintenance

Warranty
Deere’s dealer specification page lists a 2-year/120-hour bumper-to-bumper warranty for the S160. The stated term ends at whichever limit comes first, and Deere notes that warranty terms vary by model. The listed coverage is for the United States and Canada; confirm the written warranty and applicable terms for your location before purchase. Price and value: what the published figures say
John Deere’s specification sheet dated November 5, 2025 lists a suggested price of $3,299, excluding a stated $100 destination charge. That is a dated published list price, not a current quote. A Home Depot listing for model BG21384 also displayed $3,299 when accessed, but that listing does not establish current availability or the price in your area. Ask a local dealer for the current total, including delivery, setup and taxes, and check stock before making a trip.
For context, Wolfe’s October 6, 2026 comparison lists three alternatives. Those published prices can change, and the models differ in deck width and mower format, so price alone does not determine value.

How to compare the choices
- Deck width and access: A wider deck may cover open lawn in fewer passes, but only if it fits your gates, paths and turning spaces.
- Terrain and traction: The S160 is two-wheel drive. If the property is very hilly, investigate an appropriate four-wheel-drive option rather than assuming a lawn tractor will manage the slopes.
- Maneuverability: Compare a conventional tractor’s steering with a zero-turn format in the context of your obstacles and open areas.
- Work beyond mowing: For hauling, bagging, snow clearing, dethatching or aerating, check attachment compatibility and whether the mower has suitable traction for the job.
- Total cost: Compare a current local quote that includes delivery, destination or freight charges, setup, tax, compatible attachments and maintenance parts.
- Support and coverage: Confirm the written warranty and what dealer support is actually available near you.
Replacement blades and compatible parts
Deere’s parts references identify several options for the S160’s 48-inch deck: GX21784 standard blades, GX21785 bagging blades, GX21786 mulching blades and the GY20417 mulch cover kit. Deere describes the cover kit as a mulching conversion with appropriate deck components. The maintenance references also list mower belt GX21833 and other service items.
Before ordering, verify the mower’s model year, deck, serial number and part number in Deere’s parts catalog. A compatibility reference does not guarantee that a particular retailer has the part in stock. Check Deere’s parts catalog.
Quick Recap
What to confirm before buying
- Measure the narrowest gate or route to the lawn, and check whether a 48-inch deck can reach and turn in the areas you need to mow.
- Assess slopes and ground conditions. If the yard is very hilly, compare suitable four-wheel-drive equipment and seek dealer guidance rather than relying on the S160’s published power or a single reviewer’s experience.
- Get a current local quote that identifies the mower, delivery, setup, taxes and any destination or freight charge.
- Decide whether you need hauling or other attachments, then confirm compatibility, cost and operating suitability for your terrain.
- Ask for the written warranty applicable to your location and review Deere’s operator’s manual and maintenance requirements.
