A four-year-old Perth girl suffered serious eye injuries after biting into a laundry detergent capsule and rubbing her eyes, according to a report published by PerthNow on 22 April 2025. The report described urgent hospital treatment and concern about possible sight loss; it did not establish that she became permanently blind. If detergent gets into a child’s eyes, Perth Children’s Hospital ophthalmologist Dr Marina Rayside advised rinsing with tap water and going immediately to an Emergency Department.
What happened to Luca de Groot
PerthNow reported that Jodi Lowe was doing laundry at home in Baldivis with her four-year-old daughter, Luca de Groot, helping. Lowe said Luca normally held the detergent pods. When Lowe briefly turned away, Luca bit into one and began rubbing her eyes. Lowe rinsed her in the shower and called the Healthdirect poison line; the family was told they should already have been on the way to hospital. PerthNow’s account, published 22 April 2025, attributes these details to the family.
The report said Luca was first taken to Rockingham Hospital, where clinicians tried four times to flush her eyes, before she was transferred to Perth Children’s Hospital. It described a 16-day hospital stay, an abrasion in her left eye found during a second surgery, hourly eye drops for a week, and a later amniotic membrane transplant intended to promote healing. These are details reported by the news outlet, not independently reviewed clinical records.
PerthNow described red, swollen eyes, peeling skin, severe pain requiring strong medication, and serious concern about possible sight loss. At the time of publication, the family expected recovery to take about nine months and included regular hospital check-ups. That was the prognosis reported in April 2025; it is not an update on Luca’s condition today.

- PRESS-TO-OPEN LID FOR ONE-HANDED ACCESS — Push down on the lid and it springs open — grab a laundry pod or dishwasher pod with one hand while the other holds a laundry basket or baby bottle. The lid seals closed after each use to keep moisture, dust, and lint out of your pods.
- COMPACT 2L CAPACITY — WHAT ACTUALLY FITS — Holds approximately 50–60 standard laundry pods, a full bag of dishwasher pods, or a mix of dryer sheets and detergent packs. Designed to sit neatly on a shelf, counter, or under the sink without eating up cabinet space. Measures approximately 5.5 inches wide by 7 inches tall — check against your space before ordering.
- CLEAR RIBBED BODY SHOWS WHEN TO REFILL — The transparent acrylic container lets you see your pod level at a glance — no guessing, no running out mid-laundry. The modern ribbed design looks intentional on a laundry room shelf, kitchen counter, or nursery dresser.
- MORE THAN JUST LAUNDRY — Dishwasher pods under the sink. Baby bottle caps and nipples in the nursery. Candy, coffee pods, hair ties, or desk supplies. The removable lid and wide opening make it easy to clean and repurpose for whatever small items need a home.
- LID CARE NOTE — HANDLE GENTLY ON SETUP — The pop-up lid snaps onto the container base — align it carefully when attaching and avoid forcing it at an angle. Once seated correctly, the press-to-open mechanism works smoothly for daily use. If the lid arrives damaged in shipping, contact Amazon for a free replacement.
What to do if a laundry pod gets in a child’s eyes
Dr Marina Rayside, identified by PerthNow as a Perth Children’s Hospital ophthalmologist, advised parents to rinse the child’s eyes with tap water and then go immediately to an Emergency Department. Treat this as an urgent exposure, not ordinary soap irritation. PerthNow reported Rayside’s advice; the report does not provide a more detailed current poison-centre protocol.
Rayside told PerthNow: “Permanent damage is the worst case scenario, and pain management is one of the most difficult things in these cases.” If a child is exposed, follow emergency professionals’ directions rather than delaying care to search for a home remedy.

Why laundry capsules can be hazardous to children
Bright colours and small size can make laundry capsules appealing to children. In a 22 April 2025 report, 7NEWS quoted an Australian Competition & Consumer Commission warning that a capsule can burst under limited pressure and rapidly dissolve with moisture. The warning said it may burst in a child’s mouth in as little as ten seconds and cause severe injuries. 7NEWS reported the ACCC’s warning.
The same 7NEWS report attributed to the ACCC a figure of more than 16,000 cases of children being exposed to laundry pods worldwide each year. The report did not identify the underlying figure’s year or provide the original ACCC publication, so it should be understood as a secondary, undated attribution—not a verified current rate.

Reduce the chance of another exposure
PerthNow reported that Lowe’s family installed locks on laundry and kitchen cupboards after the incident. The report does not establish that any particular lock or storage product prevents injury. Practical precautions consistent with the reported risk include:
- Keep capsules in their original packaging and follow its storage instructions.
- Store the package closed and secured in a locked cupboard or otherwise out of children’s reach.
- Do not let a child handle detergent capsules during laundry tasks.
- After use, close the package and return it to secured storage rather than leaving it accessible.
If considering a lockable storage container, treat it as an additional storage measure, not a substitute for following the product label or seeking emergency care after exposure.

What the reports establish—and what they do not
The accounts published by PerthNow and 7NEWS on 22 April 2025 document the family’s report, the treating ophthalmologist’s quoted advice, and warnings attributed to the ACCC. They do not provide Luca’s current recovery status, independently verify her medical records, or include the original ACCC publication behind the worldwide exposure figure. The headline phrase “nearly blind” should therefore not be read as proof of permanent blindness.
