A divided box suits rings and earrings; necklaces need hooks or hanging space. The options below range from a beginner hinged cabinet to a maple box with a lift-out tray.
Choose a plan for the jewelry you want to store
Start with the contents, not the wood. Rings and earrings are easier to organize in divided compartments or a tray. Necklaces need hooks, hanging space, or a display feature so they are less likely to tangle. Compare each design’s finished size, storage layout, joinery, tool requirements, materials, and hardware before cutting lumber.
Beginner hinged cabinet: Kreg
Kreg rates its project easy and provides a cut list and 17 directions. It calls for a 2-by-4-foot sheet of 3/4-inch plywood plus additional wood, pocket-hole screws and a jig, glue, sandpaper, stain or paint, two small hinges, two knobs, two hooks, and glass or acrylic. The build sequence includes pocket-hole assembly, a rabbeted back, a drawer, legs, finishing, hinge installation, and fitting glass or acrylic in the doors. Use the plan’s cut list for the additional wood and individual part dimensions: Kreg jewelry box plan.
Felt-lined keepsake box: Minwax
Minwax describes a beginner project for rings, watches, and other jewelry. Its stated learning objectives are making miter cuts, using biscuit joinery, and applying felt. The project listing points to a downloadable plan; consult that plan for its dimensions and complete materials list rather than borrowing measurements from another design: Minwax jewelry box project.

Maple box with a lift-out tray: U-Bild Plan No. 906
A reproduction of U-Bild Plan No. 906 describes a beginner-friendly box made with straight cuts and simple joinery. It has a lift-out tray and a lock, and its stated finished dimensions are 13 inches wide, 10 inches deep, and 5 inches tall. Maple is preferred, though the reproduction says other wood may be substituted. The listed hardware is a pair of 1 1/2-inch butt hinges and a small box lock. Because this is a reproduced document, check the plan’s details and provenance before relying on it: U-Bild Plan No. 906 reproduction.
Simple hinged box: Ana White
Ana White’s plan uses glue and 1 1/4-inch finish nails. It recommends pre-drilling starter holes for the hinge screws. For that design, it states that flat hinges no larger than 1 1/2 inches wide and 3 1/2 inches long will work. Those hinge dimensions are specific to this box, not a general sizing rule: Ana White jewelry box plan.

Necklace display case: WOOD Store
For a design focused on necklaces rather than small compartments, the WOOD Store listing describes a walnut case approximately 6 inches deep and 10 inches tall, with a display carousel. It was featured in WOOD Issue 13, October 1986; the listing was updated January 15, 2025. Check the listing for the plan’s full dimensions, materials, and construction details: WOOD Store necklace display plan.

Plan the materials, cuts, and hardware
Use one plan’s measurements throughout
These designs have different layouts and construction methods, so their cut lists are not interchangeable. Download or obtain the selected plan and check every part dimension, stock thickness, and quantity before buying or cutting. Lumber sold by a nominal size may not measure that size after surfacing; confirm the actual thickness and width against the plan before laying out cuts.

Fit hinges to the box you are building
Hinge size and screw length must suit both the lid and the box thickness. Use the selected plan’s hardware specification when provided, and check that the screws will not break through the inside surface. For the Ana White design, the stated maximum flat-hinge size applies only to that plan. Search for small jewelry box hinges if you need to compare suitable hardware; verify measurements and screw dimensions against your own box before purchasing.
Account for lining and glazing
Felt, glass, or acrylic can affect how parts fit. The Minwax project specifically includes felt application, while Kreg’s plan includes glass or acrylic in the doors. Follow the selected plan’s instructions for sizing and fitting these materials rather than assuming they can be added after assembly without adjustments.
Quick Recap

- Used Book in Good Condition
Build in a reliable order
- Choose the plan and confirm the layout. Decide whether the box needs divided storage, a tray, hooks, or a necklace display. Check the finished dimensions and the full plan before committing to materials.
- Prepare a cut list from that plan only. Record each part’s quantity, finished dimensions, and thickness. Confirm actual stock dimensions and identify any plan-specific hardware or lining.
- Cut and label the parts. Make the cuts called for by the plan, then label parts so similar panels are not confused during assembly.
- Dry-fit the assembly. Check that the pieces meet as intended and that doors, drawers, or trays have room to move before applying glue or installing fasteners.
- Assemble using the specified joinery. Kreg’s plan uses pocket holes and a rabbeted back; the Minwax project covers miter cuts and biscuit joinery; Ana White’s plan uses glue and finish nails. Do not substitute a method without checking how it affects dimensions and strength.
- Fit moving parts and hardware. Install the drawer, tray, lid, hinges, knobs, hooks, or lock required by the selected design. Pre-drill hinge screw starter holes where the plan recommends it.
- Finish and fit interior materials. Sand and apply the finish specified or chosen for the project. Fit felt, glass, or acrylic according to the plan, allowing the materials to sit properly without interfering with doors or drawers.
Which plan should you pick?
- Choose Kreg if you want a cabinet-style design with a drawer and glass or acrylic doors, and have access to a pocket-hole jig.
- Choose Minwax if a felt-lined box and practice with miters and biscuit joinery fit your goal; use its downloadable plan for the missing dimensions and full materials list.
- Choose U-Bild Plan No. 906 if the stated 13-by-10-by-5-inch size, lift-out tray, and lock suit your storage needs, and you are comfortable verifying a reproduced plan.
- Choose Ana White if you want a simple hinged box assembled with glue and finish nails, following its plan-specific hinge guidance.
- Choose WOOD Store’s design if you prefer a necklace display carousel over a conventional keepsake layout.
